THE ART OF RON COBB
Recommended. By Jacob Johnston. During his sixty-year career, Ron Cobb started out as a radical underground comics cartoonist, but his far larger claim to fame was his concept art for some of the biggest films in sci-fi cinema. From designing spaceships for Alien, Dark Star, and Firefly and the Delorean from Back to the Future to character designs for Conan the Barbarian and creature concepts for Star Wars and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Ron has left a legacy of artwork behind to inspire future generations of concept artists. Includes exclusive insights from the talent he worked with: James Cameron, Joe Johnston, Robert Zemeckis, Bob Gale, and Nick Castle. Titan, 2022. ...More.

They share ideas, motivations, creative strokes of genius, or simple chance that lit the fire beneath their imagination. This makes it not only a visual feast of fantastical magic from artists around the world, but also an absorbing and compelling read. 3dtotal Publishing, 2022....More.

BLACK WATER LILIES
Highly Recommended. By Michel Bussi and Fred Duval. Art by Didier Cassegrain. A complex murder mystery with stylish, beautifully painted artwork, from France. Three willful women: "one old and wicked, one young and selfish, and the third in the prime of her life." And a man murdered three ways: stabbed, bludgeoned, and drowned in a stream. The mystery brings brash young InspectorLaurenç from Paris to the postcard-perfect Normandy village of Giverny, home to Impressionist Claude Monet’s gardens and studio. Laurenç soon finds himself head over heels for a pretty schoolteacher — and in over his head. Dider Cassegrain brings Michel Bussi’s bestselling novel to life in lush, delicate watercolors worthy of the famous canvases that lend the book its name: Monet’s immortal Water Lilies. Magnetic Press, 2022....More.

TODD MCFARLANE'S SPIDER-MAN Artist's Edition
Recommended. Huge oversized volume. Todd McFarlane’s gorgeous work on Spider-Man was nothing less than groundbreaking. His intense version of the web-slinging wallcrawler took the character to new heights, instilling in the character a sense of energy and vitality rarely seen before. First, in The Amazing Spider-Man, written by David Michelinie, and then in a spin-off series, with both story and art by McFarlane. McFarlane took each character and made them his own — Green Goblin, Hobgoblin, Sandman, the Vulture, the Lizard, plus his classic interpretations of the Incredible Hulk and Wolverine! And let’s not forget his alluring Mary Jane! IDW, 2022. Rush Service and International shipping would require an additional charge. ...More.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN The Original Marvel Years Epic Collection Volume 6

CONAN THE BARBARIAN The Original Marvel Years Omnibus Volume 8
Recommended. Collects Conan the Barbarian #195-213 & more, 1987-88. In the late ‘80s, artist Val Semeiks took the reins on Conan the Barbarian, injecting a powerful new energy into the series. Semeiks’ work was a force multiplier for the latter half of Christopher Priest’s era-defining run. Together, they crafted one of the greatest Conan epics of all time, a massive story line building to issue #200 and a showdown with the Devourer of Souls. As the Devourer reveals his final gambit, drawing upon the power of the Elder Gods, Conan must seek aid from one whose name even he dreads: Thulsa Doom! Also featuring the return of Red Sonja, the acclaimed "Heku Trilogy" and early work by Andy Kubert. By Crom! Marvel, 2022....More.

DISNEY MASTERS Volume 21 Mickey Mouse The Monster of Sawtooth Mountain
Collected from Walt Disney's Comics & Stories #226-248, 1959-61. Recommended. By Paul Murray. Mickey's adventure stories were a back-up to Carl Barks' Ducks in Walt Disney's, but they were actually very good and at long last are collected here. All illustrated by Paul Murry, who set the Mickey style for a decade or more. Here are eight wild adventure stories, taking place the world over, serialized over three issues each. Alex Toth

GENIUS, ISOLATED The Life and Art of Alex Toth
Our Highest Recommendation. By Dean Mullaney and Bruce Canwell. Now in paperback, this biography was compiled with complete access to Toth's archives and with the full cooperation of Toth's family. Rare comics pages from the original art, photographs, and drawings. It also reproduces 20 complete stories, including a previously unknown and unfinished story from 1950, most from the original artwork. Updates include clarification on Toth's early married life in the 1950s and the first appearance of the recently discovered final page that completes the special section collecting Jon Fury, the comic strip Toth created in the army, a prize long sought by even the most ardent Toth collectors. ALEX TOTH BRAVO FOR ADVENTURE Artist's Edition 2nd Printing
New Printing. Highly Recommended. Of every comics story Alex Toth ever drew, the only one that he kept the complete original art for was Bravo for Adventure. This is a virtual "how-to" course in drawing comics. We see how he would draw all the detail in a scene, from thumbnails to pencils to inks — only to black it out in order to focus the reader's eye on what really counted. Also included are variant versions of the Bravo saga, dozens of never-before-seen pencil roughs, preliminary drawings, and story fragments, and twelve pages of Toth's own coloring for an edition that never saw print — until now. IDW, 2022....More.

Item Code: ATBAEH

Here is more by Toth: His Roy Rogers, Glamour Int’l, Treasures Retold, and out of print editions.

A wild configuration of reprinted and new stories make these true pre-code classics. L.B. Cole turn in more of his wildest covers; Wolverton's Spacehawk comes back from the early 1940s, as does the original Blue Bolt, a superhero created by Simon & Kirby but here by another artist. Wally Wood's "The White Spirit" appears in the final issue, and Disbrow contributes six all-new horror stories. STARTLING TERROR TALES Volume 1
Collects #10, 12, 13, 4&5 (#1-5), 1952-53. Recommended. All cover by L.B. Cole. Art by Jay Disbrow, Matt Baker, Wood/Harrison et al. Horror, Jo-Jo Jungle King, a book-length adaptation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (by Wood/Harrison), violent crime and more. Publisher Star didn't have much budget, so they reprinted many stories from earlier Fox comics. But then they had Jay Disbrow do new lead stories, and the notorious L.B. Cole created some of the most highly collectible covers ever on pre-code comics. That's what we have here! PS Artbooks, 2022....More.

SILVER AGE CLASSICS: STRANGE SUSPENSE STORIES Volume 5 Hardcover
Collects #38-42, 1958-59. Recommended. Charlton's not-to-be-underestimated Strange Suspense Stories boasted a huge roster creative of talents: Dick Giordano, Gene Colan, Sol Brodsky, Bill Molno, Rocco Mastroserio, Charles Nicholas, Tony Talarico, Bill Fraccio, Matt Baker. And of course Steve Ditko whose moody, individualistic touch came to dominate Charlton's supernatural titles.
