ORIENTAL DREAMS
Highly Recommended. By Claire Maingon and Mathias Ary Jan. Published to accompany an exhibition at the Ary Jan Gallery in Paris in 2022, a handsome oversized coffee table art book. Masterpieces of 19th century Orientalist art, a great many full or double-page, with 300 color reproductions. Starting in the 1840s, a revolution in transportation allowed artists to visit countries from North Africa to the Middle East that had previously been relatively inaccessible. European artists found fascinating, exotic subjects, especially women and warriors, as well as unique architecture, tile design, and even colors and light. Here is work by Delacroix, Decamps, Berchère, Bridgman, Ziem, Gérôme, Corrodi, Dinet, Matisse, Majorelle and many, many others. Editions Norma, 2023. ...More.

CINEMA OF SWORDS
A History and Guide to Movies About Knights, Pirates, Barbarians, and Vikings. Recommended. By Lawrence Ellsworth. A history and homage to nearly four hundred movies and television shows featuring swashbucklers, knights, pirates, samurai, Vikings, gladiators, outlaw heroes like Zorro and Robin Hood, and anyone else who lives by the blade and solves their problems with the point of a sword. Though swordplay thrives as a mainstay of current pop culture— whether Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings or Star Wars — swashbuckling was if anything even more ubiquitous during Hollywood’s classic period, from its foundations in the Silent Era up through the savage bursts of fantasy films in the '80s. Applause, 2023. ...More.

THE RULING CLAWSS The Socialist Cartoons of Syd Hoff
Recommended. First published in 1933 under a pseudonym, here prominent New Yorker contributor Syd Hoff offers us mordant and marvelously drawn gag comics skewering the rich and powerful with a pointed pen. Scorning what he saw as the complicity and stale yucks of cartooning peers like Peter Arno, Hoff set his sights on the rich and powerful and revealed them for what they were: hilariously inept, deeply selfish, and incredibly dangerous, lampooning police brutality, thin-skinned industrialists, racists, and the looming threat of fascism at home and abroad. New York Review Comics, 2023....More.

THE PLANETOID AND OTHER STORIES by Joe Orlando
Highly Recommended. Joe Orlando became a mainstay at EC, especially on science fiction, and this collects his first two dozen stories, all scripted by Al Feldstein. These serve up classic O. Henry-style shock endings, including a mind-bending time-travel twister in which a man visits the past and (unknowingly) romances his own mother (think about it), a gender-switching look at a future where women are the breadwinners and men are the homemakers, another future where marriages are limited by law to three-year contracts, a good old-fashioned "planets collide" shocker, an animal rights parable, plus lots of rollicking space opera, aliens, and, of course, interplanetary monsters (some of them human). Fantagraphics, 2023....More.

TAO BANG

The lovely Ellora has found her business in freefall since the dragon sheikh Ad Arphax opened a competing brothel nearby. So she sets out with a pirate ruffian Norden to find the Isle of Mermaids, whose siren song should bring in the customers and put her back on top. But the journey is wrought with fantastic dangers, not the least of which is the Amazon pirate Tao Bang — an old acquaintance of Norden's — now in the employ of Ad Arphax...not to mention dragons, monsters, and a fair amount of slapstick stupidity by several players. In my humble opinion, the best in modern graphic novels are coming from France. Not always, but on the average, these are more different, more far-ranging than we see in the U.S. Click here for all of our French Graphic Novels, always now translated into English.

Icv2 Zoom Interview – Complete!

Well, it turns out the link I gave you last week was just the teaser about Phil Seuling and I. Icv2 editor and friend Milton Griepp put up another much longer prose piece with some nice comments from folks in the industry.

At the end of that, you’ll find links to parts 1, 2 and 3 of entire 60-75 minute interview conducted by Dan Gearino (Comic Shop).

My career in comics: Marvel Zombie circa 1964, discovering fandom, DC EC and good-art comics in 1965, early days of the Direct Market, Comics & Comix stores 1972-88, business ups and downs, selling out to Diamond, and much about this very business beginning in 1970 and 53 years later, looking back…
