JIM APARO Brave & Bold Artist
Introduction by Alan Davis! Recommended. The writing team of Jim Amash and Eric Nolen-Weathington (editors of Matt Baker: The Art of Glamour; Carmine Infantino: Penciler, Publisher, Provocateur; and Sal Buscema: Comics’ Fast and Furious Artist) turns the Bat Signal on the life and work of one of comics’ finest, Jim Aparo — considered by a generation of comic-book readers as the greatest Batman artist of them all. TwoMorrows, 2026....More.

Item Code: JIMAH
Hard Cover, 9x11, 176pg, Text/Partial Color
$39.95 $35.95
I was a huge Batman fan back in the '80s and '90s, and one of my favorite artists to draw the character was Jim Aparo. His Batman just seemed more real to me, which was due in no small part to Aparo's skill as an artist. It was just real, and he brought that quality to everything he did. TwoMorrows excels at these artist biographies, and this one is another winner! Recommended.

OIL AND WATER The Paintings of Brian J. Haberlin
Recommended. Known worldwide for his work in the comic book industry, Haberlin has turned his boundless creative energy toward watercolor and oil painting, melding narrative, atmosphere, and exquisite technique in each piece. This 120-page hardcover volume captures the breadth of Haberlin’s evolving artistic journey. From delicate studies of the human form to richly textured dreamscapes, these works bridge the realms of fantasy and reality with a signature voice as compelling as his celebrated graphic novels. Image Comics, 2026....More.

Item Code: OILWH
Hard Cover, 10x11, 120pg, Full Color
$50.00 $44.95
You may not know Brian Haberlin's name immediately, but you've probably seen his work in the pages of Faster Than Light, Spawn, Medieval Spawn, and other recent titles. In addition to his comics work, he also creates beautiful and moody painted art, of which some of his favorite and best images are collected in this beautiful hardcover. It's gorgeous work, and this collection is very impressive indeed. Highly Recommended.

Frank Frazetta - Early Works

BECOMING FRAZETTA The Early Years of a Fantasy Art Master Signed
Signed bookplate by Michael Finn! Introduction by Sara Frazetta. Art analysis by Mark Schultz. Foreword by Joe Mannarino. Recommended. By Michael Finn. Before he was a legend, he was just a Brooklyn kid with a pencil and a dream. Becoming Frazetta is the first book to uncover how he grew into the iconic fantasy painter we revere today. Created in collaboration with the Frazetta Girls and with unprecedented access to the Frazetta family and the archives of Bernard Baily's publishing company, this biography reveals dozens of unpublished pages Frank drew as a teen — including more than 50 pages of art for what would have been Frank's first published solo stories had Baily's company not gone bankrupt. Includes Frank’s never-before-seen childhood story, "Grey Dawn," alongside rare art by his teacher, Professor Michele Falanga, and his early mentor, John Giunta. Rich with discoveries, this is the untold story of how Frazetta became Frazetta. Thrilling Nostalgia, 2025....More.

If you're a Frazetta fan, then you owe it to yourself to check out this in-depth look at the work of a very young Frank Frazetta, who displayed an eye for action and movement even in his teens. Highly Recommended!

THE FANTASTIC WORLDS OF FRANK FRAZETTA
Limited First Edition, 6000 individually numbered copies. Available from us but now out of print. Our Highest Recommendation. Introduction by Dan Nadel. This monograph is the biggest and most complete ever produced on the artist, done in collaboration with the Frazetta family and with top collectors. Frank Frazetta has reigned as the undisputed lord of fantasy art for 50 years, his fame only growing in the 10 years since his death. With his paintings now breaking auction records, he's long overdue for this ultimate monograph. This has a LOT of material rarely or never before seen. Many nudes that Frank just did for himself are here; early work from his youth and early days in comics, Li'l Abner and Thunda pages, early comic book covers — all from his original art. There are also later advertising works never before collected, early paperback covers now show from the paintings. There's also a good bibliography of many of the works originally published as paperback, magazine and book covers. Taschen, 2023. Out of Print. ELVIRA IN MONSTERLAND Hardcover
Item Code: ELVMONH
Hard Cover, 7x10, 136pg, Full Color
$24.99

I was always a big fan of Cassandra Peterson, a.k.a. horror hostess Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. She brought significant sex appeal to bad horror movies, proving that presentation really is everything. I've enjoyed Dynamite's Elvira comic series over the past few years (the Vincent Price team-up series was fantastic), and teaming Elvira with the classic movie monsters is a natural. Keep an eye out for Elvira in Horrorland, which is expected anyday.

Snowmageddon II

Well….it’s been a crazy week here. We got about 20" of snow, while we are used to getting just a few occasional inches. Our warehouse sits at just under 3000 ft elevation, on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains, between Lake Tahoe and Sacramento.

Thankfully it wasn't as bad as the mulitple feet of snow we received in March of 2023 where we lost power, internet and phone lines. Today, February 20th, we have nearly a full crew, so the phones will be answered, and all orders will go out. If you tried to call this week, we appriciate your patience. With so many spinouts and road closures, we thought it best to remain closed and keep the staff safe.

Overstreet Price Guide

The word on the street is The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #55 is scheduled to hit comic shops next week, on Wednesday, February 25, 2026. We have yet to receive our copies, but UPS is backed up due to the current winter storms. Our driver told us today that we will most likely get a large number of parcels delivered Monday.

This is another great series by Jim Starlin, best known for his work at Marvel, including The Infinity Saga. Breed played out on a different level, cosmically speaking. Starting back in 1994, this dark fantasy series began under Malibu’s “Bravura” imprint, and then 18 years later was completed at Image Comics. It was worth the wait. We have a signed edition available, for those that may not be able to track Jim down at a con appearance.

I was really into Warren’s Creepy and Eerie as a young collector, but I also enjoyed the horror mags from Skywald with their “Horror-Mood” tales and Boris Vallejo covers. Nightmare was a personal favorite of mine (being the first of their titles that I discovered), and these PS Artbooks reprints present the full contents of each issue. I’d like to see these collected into a single volume eventually.

DC's grim arbiter resurfaced in the 1960s, brought back by the dream-team of Julius Schwartz, Gardner Fox and Murphy Anderson in Showcase in 1966, then in The Brave and the Bold, in ten issues of his own title, also by Fox and Anderson, and ultimately returned to the all-powerful 1940s version dark Spectre as reimagined by Fleisher and Aparo in Adventure Comics #431-440. News & Notes

Ownership Change

As a lot of you have most likely heard, Bud's Art Books was recently acquired by industry veteran Bill Schanes (along with his partner in the acquisition, Sasha-Fera Schanes of Pop King Inc.). Bill is the former president and co-owner (with his brother Steve) of the southern California Pacific Comics chain, which also branched out to publishing and distribution (the latter Bill sold to Bud back in 1985). In 1986, Bill moved to Maryland to work for Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc. as their VP of Purchasing until his retirement in 2013.

After traveling around the world visiting over 160 different countries, and Comics, Gaming and Specialty Toy shops wherever he went, he returned to the US and set his sights on re-entering the industry, approaching Bud about acquiring the Bud's Art Books business, which Bud himself attempted to sell in 2012, then rebuilt the business from the ground up with new and rehired staff. The deal was worked out and closed fairly quickly by the end of 2025, and as of February 1st, Bud's Art Books is under new management.

As for Bud, he's helping Bill and his writer/editor, Marty Grosser (former Editor of PREVIEWS), acclimate to the "Bud Plant" way, and then he's going to begin his well-deserved retirement. Although he'll consult on the transition of the new Bud's Art Books, Bud plans to focus his attention on his rare books online business, Bud Plant and Hutchison Books, which he runs alongside his partner Anne Hutchison. They already sell rare and exotic out-of-print books - illustrated books, art books, comics related, vintage paperbacks and even old comics their website and at various book shows around the region. We wish them both much success and good times!

Spring Incredible Catalog

Currently we're putting the finishing touches on the Spring 2026 edition of BUD PLANT'S INCREDIBLE CATALOG (#80), with a fun cover by Brian Kesinger.

We'll be mailing this new issue out to current customers in about a month or so. But you'll also be able to download the .PDF version of the catalog several weeks earlier than the print version is available. Look for the download link's release next week.

Comic Book Price Guide

We've heard from our friends at Gemstone Publishing that the long-delayed Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #55 will finally release on February 25th. This volume features a new painted Tarzan cover by Joe Jusko, which honors Joe Kubert's classic Tarzan cover for the 5th Edition of the GUIDE, which celebrated the 100th anniversary of Edgar Rice Burroughs' birth (1875-1975). Volume 5 was also Jusko's first-ever guide purchased! You can order this new edition on our site, available in Softcover (CB55) and Hardcover (CB55H).

Also available will be The BIG! BIG! Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide Vol. 55 (BIG55), featuring a painted cover of Golden Age heroine, LADY LUCK, by John K. Snyder III!

Congratulations to Bud!

Finally, we wanted to congratulate Bud on the recent announcement that he will be inducted into the Eisner Awards Hall of Fame! Bud, along with 18 other industry icons, will be honored at this year's Eisner Awards ceremony at Comic Con in San Diego. All we can say is, it's well-deserved, and we couldn't be happier that he's being recognized for his contributions to the industry and the hobby over his long career.

~Marty
