TWIXT TWO WORLDS #3 By Thomas Yeates Signed
Signed and numbered from 1,000! Highly Recommended. Art by Thomas Yeates. Edited by Dwayne Covey. Thomas Yeates' third sketchbook has pen & ink and pencil drawings of Tarzan, John Carter, Dejah Thoris, and many other lesser known Edgar Rice Burroughs characters; plus Sheena, Domino Lady, Doc and Pat Savage, Zorro and more. Jane, La of Opar, Dejah Thoris and others are often partially nude and very attractively done. These are mainly spontaneous convention sketches of characters and scenes, selected by the customer, drawn by hand in pencil and finished by hand in wet india ink. Yeates is the current artist on the Prince Valiant Sunday strip—who also appears here with Aleta. Thomas started his career illustrating with The Swamp Thing for DC Comics in the 1980s. Bud Plant, 2018. Mature Readers...More.

As mentioned in the full description, we co-published with book with collector Dwayne Covey, who commissioned the artwork, and with Thomas Yeates. We have very early numbers, first come, first served, beginning with every other number from #4 to #60. These appeared in the Diamond Previews for June, but the book will not be available in selected comic stores until July. We will not have enough copies to solicit them again with Diamond; otherwise they are exclusively available from ourselves and from Yeates at the shows he attends.

Pre-Code Classics

PRE-CODE CLASSICS BEWARE Volume 2
Collects #8-14, 1954-55. Recommended. Art by Sid Check, Frazetta, Jay Disbrow, Myron Fass and Harry Harrison. Frazetta puts in a rare apperance, collaborating with Sid Check on an amazing cover. There are also stories of "a heart torn out," "blood drainage" and that's only what Overstreet is pointing out. One of the weirder titles of the time, as the filled newstands meant publishers had to outdo the competiton with bloodier, darker, stranger stories of horror. Sid Check provides two exceptional stories here and also Jay Disbrow, who is clunky but always fun. PS Artbooks, 2018...More.

PRE-CODE CLASSICS WEB OF MYSTERY Volume 1
Collects #1-6, 1951. Recommended. Art by Lou Cameron, Gene Colan, Mike Sekowsky et a Here comes the first volume of Ace Comics' horror title, one that I personally like quite a bit. Artist Lou Cameron is an unsung name from this time; his Time Machine for Classics Illustrated is his best known work, but early on he was doing superior and imaginative artwork sometimes as good as a Frazetta or Williamson. And here's Mike Sekowsky, between his career beginning at Timely and ending up at DC Comics. PS Artbooks, 2018...More.

PRE-CODE CLASSICS WEIRD HORRORS Volume 1
Collects #1-5, 1952. Recommended. Art by Pete Morisi (PAM), Gus Ricca, George Tuska, Charles Sultan et al. St. John's criminally overlooked Weird Horrors has a cover style that's a riff on Marvel's later and much-loved Amazing Adult Fantasy. And believe me, you'll have to go a long way to match this first volume, with work from Gus Ricca, George Tuska, Charles Sultan, Bob Forgione, Enrico Bagnoli, Rafael Astarita, Paul Gattuso, Don Perlin and Albert Tyler, many of whom are not household names though their styles deserve for them to be right up there with the very best. #3 has a hashish story! PS Artbooks, 2018...More.

PRE-CODE CLASSICS DARK MYSTERIES Volume 2
Collects #7-12, 1952-53. Recommended. Art by Harry Harrison, A.C. Hollingsworth, Hy Fleishman, Doug Wildey et al. Some of the most weirdest and most esoteric stories and covers of the time. Skeletons, anyone? They loved them on every cover. And busty, Wally Wood-ish ladies--on the covers and inside, too. Dismemberment, hypo blood drainage, cannibalism, witch burning, severed heads...even a horror witch hostess clearly stolen from EC. And that's all noted in Overstreet! As shown on the cover here, artist Hy Fleishman was obviously influenced by Wood and he has plenty here. Also so does Hollingsworth, also a Woody clone. PS Artbooks, 2018...More.

PERCY CROSBY'S SKIPPY Daily Comics 1934-1936
Recommended. Edited by Jared Gardner and Dean Mullaney. Here we are, at the height of Percy Crosby's cartooning career, but also during his one-man political and social crusade. Crosby influenced cartoonists from Charles Schulz to Walt Kelly to Garry Trudeau, and, perhaps more than any other cartoonist before him, brought philosophy and politics to the American newspaper comic strip. Bonus materials include a 14--page introduction with scads of Skippy merchandise--he was huge, promoting furnace oil, Mazda lamps, games, dolls, cereal and bread! IDW, 2018...More.

FANTASTIC FOUR BY JOHN BYRNE Omnibus Volume 1
By John Byrne, Chris Claremont et al. Art by Jack Kirby and Ron Wilson. It was the world's greatest comic magazine -- again! Not since the days of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby had a creator so perfectly captured the intense mood, cosmic style and classic sense of adventure of Marvel's First Family. Fresh off an earth-shattering and reputation-making run as penciler on Uncanny X-Men, John Byrne proved his writing talent was every bit the equal of his art as he pulled double-duty on Fantastic Four, launching Reed, Sue, Ben and Johnny into realms of imagination and wonder into which few creators had dared to travel before. When I was prowling the back corners of the warehouse in search of something vintage for Free Comic Book Day, I stumbled onto a small stack of these vintage issues, circa 1981. This was a very well-done attempt of a British publisher to collect prime, early DC stories from the beginning of the Silver Age, in oversized black and white magazines. It was unique in its day.

We have just six copies each of #9 (SUPH09) and #10 (SUPH10), and 4 copies of #1. We already have offered #8 (SUPH08. six copies left) and #11 (SUPH11. 11 copies left) and the two volume set (SUPHEP. many copies left).

News and Notes

Signed books from ERB Inc

At the Edgar Rice Burroughs show last weekend, we got several books that will be going up on the website, but not in time for this week. We have a new title, Untamed Pellucidar by Lee Strong, signed and in hardcover. The softcover ($19.95) is not yet out, and will not be signed. We have the only available copies of Tarzan of the Apes/Johnny Weismueller cover, of which there are only 50 copies in existence, produced for a special event in Los Angeles. It's the classic novel with a specially-done cover of the famous actor. The rest of the run sold at the event; we bought the remaining copies.

We got just four and six signed copies of two more hardcovers, which we previously listed as unsigned: Swords Against the Moon Men and Tarzan Trilogy. And finally, a new DVD, Tarzan: Lord of the Louisiana Jungle. Back in stock is Joe Jusko's Art of Edgar Rice Burroughs, to which we are adding signed bookplates we still had from the original release in 1996!
All this is first come, first served. If you really want a copy of any of these that are low in stock, get your order in asap Thursday night, or Friday morning, or call after 9am PST on Friday and make sure we have signed copies left for you.

The Edgar Rice Burroughs 100 Year Art Chronology

[ERB100SD. Leatherbound $299, and ERB100D, Clothbound $219] are nearly here. I saw an unslipcased advance set at the ERB show and they look very, very good. As far as we know, we still can reorder sets, and we have more than spoken for coming in, but beware...they could sell out once people see how nice they are. Act accordingly. We expect them very soon, early to mid-June.

The Graveyard Book goes to the movies

Ron Howard is discussing doing a film based on the Neil Gaiman story. Ron took over the Director role on the Han Solo movie. His films are always top notch. I love this Gaiman book and it has long received my Highest Recommendation for both the prose edition, which won the coveted Newbery Award for Best American Literature for Children aka Best Young Adult Novel, and the follow-up graphic novel by P. Craig Russell and others.

It is available from us in a bargain-priced set of three paperbacks in a slipcase, which also contains the original prose novels Coraline and Fortunately the Milk. It is also available as a graphic novel, first done in hardcover as two volumes, then done in softcover. We still have these editions available. Also available in a handsome combined hardcover in jacket. The deluxe signed edition of the graphic novel is also still in print, as far as I know. We have a two on hand and are ordering several more.

The first edition of the prose Graveyard Book in hardcover sells for around $50+ unsigned, $100+ signed. My partner Anne (Bud Plant and Hutchison Books, bpandhbooks@me.com) has an unsigned edition on hand for $45.
