BOB FOSTER'S CHRISTMAS CARDS Signed Signed wih a small original drawing, hand-tints, two extra blow-ins, and two tip-ins! Highly Recommended. Foreword by William Stout. Testimonials by Sergio Aragones, Willie Ito and Daan Jippes A collection of personal holiday greeting cards that Bob sent out to fewer than 40 friends and family members spanning the years 1974 - 2018. Most cards were written in quirky rhymes and illustrated with amusing cartoons. Plus two more surprises inserted inside the back cover. CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS COMPANION Volume 1 By various. All the tie-in stories to Crisis On Infinite Earths are finally collected in this massive compendium. In 1985, DC Comics dramatically altered comics' original universe with this 12-issue series that rocked comics. This landmark graphic novel collects one of the most nuanced, sweeping sagas ever told--all the action that spilled over into numerous other comics, including tales with the Justice League, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and the New Teen Titans, as well as cult classic characters like the Omega Men and Firestorm and the JSA reincarnation, The All Star Squadron. EC ARCHIVES Incredible Science Fiction Almost Gone! Collects Weird Science Fantasy #27-29, Incredible Science Fiction #30-33. Our Highest Recommendation. By Otto Binder, Al Feldstein et al. Art by Wally Wood, Jack Davis, Al Williamson, Frank Frazetta, Reed Crandall et al. EC was proudest of their sci-fi titles. When they combined the two into one, they became Weird Science-Fantasy, then with a name change Incredible Science Fiction. This was EC's last hurrah, and they went out with some of their very finest stories and art. Frazetta's only solo-EC cover, the incredible WSF #29, the amazing "Food For Thought" by Williamson and Roy Krenkel; three Adam Link stories, Wood's stunning cover for the last issue, Crandall doing sci-fi, Jack Davis doing cover AND stories. Oh, man, this is top drawer! Dark Horse, 2017. Out of Print....More. Item Code: ECISFH Hard Cover, 8x11, 230pg, Full Color $49.99 |
To the best of our knowledge this remains out of print at the moment, we just got four copies back in and already sold one. See more about Dark Horse and EC Archives below in News and Notes. |
HEDY LAMARR An Incredible Life Recommended. By William Roy. Art by Sylvian Dorange. From a childhood filled with curiosity and ambition despite the stereotypes imposed on her, to an abusive marriage that she ingeniously escaped from, to finding her way to Hollywood stardom in the 1930s and 1940s... Hedy was billed as the world's most beautiful woman but faced rampant sexism and harassment. But as well as a glamorous star of the Golden Age of Hollywood, alongside Judy Garland and Clark Gable, she was an unparalleled inventor. Her designs revolutionized planes built by Howard Hughes, and her secret communication system helped the Allies against the Nazis, a technology that would become the blueprint for today's Wi-Fi! PRE-CODE CLASSICS SPOOK Volume 1 Collects #22-26, 1953. Recommended. Art by L.B.Cole, Jay Disbrow, Rudy Palais et al. Star Comics was run by L.B. Cole, a man who put great faith in bright colors and striking cover designs. A typical Star issue would have--as all five of these issues do--an eye-opening surreal cover by Cole. Inside there's pre-code horror, in these issues by the unique and fun Jay Disbrow, along with Ken Battefield, George Peltz, Rudy Palais (whose work is a highlight of the Crime Does Not Pay run), Vernon Henkel, and Howard Larsen, whose work for Avon and Fox make him an over-the-top artist to remember. Wild stuff all around. PS Artbooks, 2018...More. Item Code: PCS01H Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 7x10, 184pg, Full Color $44.99 |
PRE-CODE CLASSICS DARK MYSTERIES Volume 3 Collects #13-18, 1953-4. Recommended. Art by Joe Orlando, Walter Johnson, Harry Harrison, A.C. Hollingsworth et al. Hy Fleishman and A.C. Hollingsworth were both Wally Wood-insipired artists, not up to him certainly but interesting and funky also-rans. So was this company, Master/Merit, doing their utmost to imitate and cash in on EC's horror line. Skeletons sell? Ok, let's put them on EVERY cover! Can we outdo EC for gore and violence? Sure, why not? Here is some very weird and esoteric material, including dismemberment, hypo blood drainage, cannibalism, witch burning, severed heads...and that's just the stuff noted in Overstreet! PS Artbooks, 2018...More. Item Code: PCD03H Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 7x10, 216pg, Full Color $54.99 |
PRE-CODE CLASSICS WEIRD HORRORS Volume 2 Collects Weird Horrors #6-9,1953; Do You Believe in Nightmares #1-2,1957-58. Highly Recommended. Art by Joe Kubert, Steve Ditko, Dick Ayers, Lou Cameron et al. This one has it all: two super weird covers by Ekgren, two magnificent covers by Kubert and one by Ditko. An Atomic Bomb story, primo artwork by Joe Kubert (3 stories), Steve Ditko (almost the entire issue of Nightmares #1), and Dick Ayers. Plus two killer stories by Lou Cameron, an unsung great from this era. All from the hallowed publisher St. John, who was always a step or two ahead most of the other publishers for story and art quality--St. John did all the wonderful Matt Baker books that are so hot right now, and the first graphic novel. PS Artbooks, 2018...More. Item Code: PCWH02H Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 7x10, 216pg, Full Color $54.99 |
ALSO AVAILABLE PRE-CODE CLASSICS WEIRD HORRORS Volume 1 Collects #1-5, 1952. Recommended. Art by Pete Morisi (PAM), Gus Ricca, George Tuska, Charles Sultan et al. St. John's criminally overlooked Weird Horrors has a cover style that's a riff on Marvel's later and much-loved Amazing Adult Fantasy. And believe me, you'll have to go a long way to match this first volume, with work from Gus Ricca, George Tuska, Charles Sultan, Bob Forgione, Enrico Bagnoli, Rafael Astarita, Paul Gattuso, Don Perlin and Albert Tyler, many of whom are not household names though their styles deserve for them to be right up there with the very best. #3 has a hashish story! PS Artbooks, 2018...More. Item Code: PCWH01H Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 7x10, 184pg, Full Color $44.99 |

BILL SIENKIEWICZ'S MUTANTS AND MOON KNIGHTS Artifact Edition One of our best-selling Artifact Editions. Recommended. By Bill Sienkiewicz. Bill Sienkiewicz is a modern master, having worked on some of Marvel's most iconic comics of the 1980s: Moon Knight, The New Mutants, and Elektra: Assassin. His unique style can't be replicated, yet many artists have been inspired to emulate him. This collection is filled with some of his finest covers, pin-ups, and exceptional pages. All have been meticulously scanned from the original art and reproduced to the exacting artist's edition standards that have won IDW Publishing five highly coveted Eisner Awards (to date)! GIGER By HR Giger Bargain-priced new collection. Recommended. Foreword by Timothy Leary. For decades H.R. Giger (1940—2014) reigned as one of the leading exponents of fantastic art. His work ranged from surrealistic dream landscapes created with a spray gun and stencils to album cover designs for famous pop stars to sculptures. In addition, Giger's multi-faceted career included designing two bars, located in Tokyo and Chur, as well as work on various film projects—his most famous, the set design and title figure for Ridley Scott's film Alien, won him not only international fame but also an Academy Award for Best Achievement for Visual Effects (1980). Then we have pen & ink artist Dan Beard, and his collaboration, c.1889, with Mark Twain, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. KRAZY George Herriman, A Life in Black and White Now in softcover. By Michael Tisserand. An epic and revelatory biography of Krazy Kat creator George Herriman explores the turbulent time and place from which he emerged—and the deep secret he explored through his art. The creator of the greatest comic strip in history finally gets his due—in an eye-opening biography that lays bare the truth about his art, his heritage, and his life on America's color line. Although fitfully popular with readers of the period, his work has been widely credited with elevating cartoons from daily amusements to anarchic art. Harper, 2016...More. STAN LEE EXCELSIOR POSTER Closeout Price! Warehouse find Recommended. The day that we got word that Stan had passed away, we stumbled across this small stash of posters. I liked it so much, we used it for our website notice that Stan was no longer with us. Anyway, we have about 15 copies of this, and as a big fan of Stan myself, I think it's fun. Strangely, it has no date and no publisher. It was clearly a picture taken in the 1970s or 80s, since Stan is standing before a display of Fireside Marvel compilations, perhaps as a free promotional poster of some sort? . Out of Print....More. VINTAGE SCI-FI 2019 Calendar Highly Recommended. Every year this is the most popular of the "Vintage" line, and we find each year fresh and fun with cool images from the pulps. This year we have two classic 1940's Planet Stories, a 1931 issue of Wonder Stories Quarterly, four Startling Stories including one of the all-time classic covers, an unusual Captain Future, plus an Astonishing, Two Complete Science-Adventure Books (still a pulp!), and one digest, a fun 1956 Imagination. DC CORE BATGIRL PVC Statue Recommended. DC Collectibles gets you to the core of some of DC's most beloved characters. DC Core is a line of 9" premium PVC statues, priced far below the usual cold-cast statues, which feature dynamic poses atop integrated character-specific bases. This comes in a handsome window display box and is a nice large and colorful image. We like it. A feisty red-haired Batgirl in striking blue and yellow custume shows her smile and her grit in a great pose. DC, 2018...More. Item Code: DCCBAT 9" tall, Full Color $55.00 |
DC CORE WONDER WOMAN PVC Statue Recommended. Sculpted by Dave Cortes. Wonder Woman, Amazon royalty and the protector of Earth, comes to life in this stunning statue from the DC Core line, sculpted by Dave Cortes. Wonder Woman stands battle-ready in this impressive, large PVC statue. It's nicely colorful, features excellent detail, right down to the mini-explosions of bullets hitting her magic bracelets! The statue captures Diana's majesty and courage in the face of attack, wearing her warrior outfit including her signature tiara and double-W insignia. In a window-display box. DC, 2018...More. SILVER AGE CLASSICS TALES OF THE MYSTERIOUS TRAVELER Volume 1 Collects #1-5,1956-57. Highly Recommended. By Steve Ditko, Dick Giordano and Rocco Mastroserio. With issue #2 Ditko practically took over this title, and by #4 and 5 was doing it literally cover to cover, with 3-4 stories. Prelude to Doctor Strange? You be the judge. But us Ditko fans find this pre-Marvel era still marvelous, as Ditko developed his unique style and gave, in this case, one of his very few early continuing characters. A clear inspiration to the hugely popular Amazing Adult Fantasy and all those fun Lee & Ditko morality tales, The Mysterious Traveler is surely the original "adult" comic and the one that's still worth a deep read. PRE-CODE CLASSICS HAND OF FATE Volume 1 Collects #8-12 (actually #1-5),1951-52. Recommended. By Lou Cameron, Mike Sekowski, Ken Rice et al. I consider Ace a good step above most of the EC competitors. They offered offbeat stories tied together by the character "Fate," who provided narration. It's all about the living and the dead--and the undead, as well as getting what you shouldn't wish for, and the inevitable figure of death himself. This veritable sleeper from the Ace stable also includes work by Jim McLaughlin, Maurice Gutwirth, George Appel, Louis Zansky, Bill Molno, and Marvel's own Chic Stone. PS Artbooks, 2018. For over twenty years, the back stories of the now-iconic characters from Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon's landmark graphic novel had been the subject of much debate and theorizing. News and Notes |
Stan the Man Like all of you, we were saddened to hear that the most famous creator in comics had passed away. I have little doubt that I owe my career in comics retailing to Stanit was those amazing Marvel comics, which I discovered at the beginning of 1964, that turned me from an occasional comics fan into a passionate collector. I subscribed to titles, scoured bookstores and the San Jose Flea Market for back issues, which led me to find other collectors with the same passion. Together we opened comic book stores, drove to comic-cons across the country, published comics and fanzines, and became life-long friends that I still am close to MORE than 50 years later. If it wasn't for those amazing stories in The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, The Avengers, The X-Men, The Mighty Thor, Tales of Suspense, Tales to Astonish, I hesitate to think what I'd be doing today. Stan, thank you with all sincerity, for how much you brought to the world of comics and to all of us readers.

Dark Horse Continues the EC Archives Series I got a surprising letter from my friend Mike Richardson at Dark Horse, asking where we got the idea that they might be losing the license to do the EC Archives, which I mentioned here last week. Well, it came from someone working at Dark Horse, but it turned out to be incorrect. Dark Horse and EC are continuing their plan to bring all the EC comics back into print. I am more than pleased to let you know, since I think they are doing a great job with these. We will continue to handle each new title and keep all the available backlist in stock.

Bob Foster Bob's Chrismas Cards book is an unlikely item to appeal to a wide audience. But I think you should know, it's a darned fun book. I first met Bob when he published Myron Moose, back in the 1970s, at a San Diego Comic-Con we were both attending. He and I share an interest in classic book illustrators, in vintage comics, in the greats of animation. I went into retailing. Bob became an illustrator and animator and is an unsung creator behind a great many projects, as you will see from the biography I included with his book.

This promises to be the first in a line of labor-of-love projects he's working on. Next up is a sketchbook that he's kept since 1973, when he was hanging out with famous comic book artists and working at Disney and Hanna-Barbera. He has some of the most amazing drawings by creators that I've had the privilege to see in a sketchbook of any kind. So stay tuned, and get in on the ground floor with his first VERY limited project above.
