GAMAYUN TALES Volume 2 Our Highest Recommendation. Alexander Utkin's delightful series continues. Fresh and modern adaptations of familiar Slavic (Russian) folktales, teamed with bold and beautiful illustrations. Inter-related stories refer you back to old tales in Volume 1, or promise more in what we hope are additional volumes. In "Vasilisa and the Doll", a young girl seeks out the mysterious Baba-Yaga to save those she loves, with the help of a magic doll, and Baba sends her on a quest for golden, life-saving apples. And the next story inter-relates, as the dying King's three sons go after the self-same apples. "Truly gorgeous illustration and craft." -Broken Frontier. Absolutely beautifully drawn! All-ages. Nobrow, 2021....More. Item Code: GAMT02 Soft Cover, 6x9, 172pg, Full Color |
I also Highly Recommend Volume 1, which can be read totally independent of this, but it also quite nicely ties in with stories in the new volume. It's fun picking up not-so-subtle threads from story to story, and book to book [GAMT01. $19.95, $17.95]. Read them both, then give them to anyone who loves a good graphic novel.

Yoshiharu Tsuge |
|
YOSHIHARU TSUGE THE SWAMP Recommended. Yoshiharu Tsuge is one of the most influential and acclaimed practitioners of literary comics in Japan. The Swamp collects work from his early years, showing a major talent coming into his own. Bucking the tradition of mystery and adventure stories, Tsuge's fiction focused on quirky and poignant tales: of an errant samurai with a secret, a female ninja assassin with a LONG game plan, a funny nod to Lone Wolf & Cub, with a surprise twist, a mystery scroll that brings good fortune, a highly desired book that brings out the best in people, a graverobber who gets his just deserts… These mesmerizing comics, like those of his contemporary Yoshihiro Tatsumi, reveal a gritty, at times desperate Japan, while displaying Tsuge's unique sense of humor and point of view. Eleven stories plus an essay on the artist. Drawn & Quarterly, 2020....More. Item Code: YOSHSH Hard Cover, 6x9, 256pg, b&w $24.95 |

DC COMICS The Art of Lee Bermejo Recommended. The boldest and most iconic work of comics legend Lee Bermejo is collected here. Known for his incredible imagery on Batman, Lex Luthor: Man of Steel, Before Watchman: Rorshach, and The Joker graphic novel in 2008, Bermejo also launched the Suiciders series for Vertigo in 2015, and We Are Robin for DC, and drew the 2000s variant cover for Action Comics #1000. This includes both covers and painted story pages. He's known for his dark and mature themes, and this shows that work and more in one unique coffee table collection. DC Comics, 2021. ...More. REMEDIOS VARO The Mexican Years By Masayo Nonaka. Recommended. A definitive survey of the life and work of a singularly appealing and mysterious Surrealist painter. For some ten years, from the mid-1950s until her death in 1963, Varo devoted herself to creating an extraordinary dreamlike oeuvre, on the threshold between mysticism and modernity. Her beautifully crafted images of medieval interiors, occult workshops and androgynous figures engaged in alchemical pursuits evoke the eerie allegories of Hieronymus Bosch, esoteric engravings and the charm and lure of fairy tales. This catalogue includes a complete illustrated chronology with never before published images. RM, 2020. ...More. Item Code: REMVH Hard Cover, 10x11, 120pg, Partial Color $45.00 |

So whenever there's an important — and possibly dangerous — mission to be handed out, the crew of the Polaris is picked. But this time they may be in over their heads. They've been placed under the command of Major Connel, a legendary spaceman who seems determined to cut the boys down to size. After their ship is refitted for hyperdrive, the crew of the Polaris heads into deep space for Alpha Centauri. These are but a few of the mysteries confounding Captain Steve Strong and the big Venusian engineer, Astro, as the Solar Guard races against time to save the mining colony on Saturn's largest satellite. At stake are the lives of hundreds of men, women and children; the future of the intrepid Polaris crew; and quite possibly the fate of the entire star system. Rocket Science Books, 2018....More. Once hailed as the pride of the Academy, Tom and his pals now find themselves in a downward spiral of embarrassing mistakes and misunderstandings that could spell the end of their careers. Little do they realize they've become pawns in a high-stakes game of deadly interstellar sabotage, a game in which the winner will definitely take all. Item Code: TOMSIS Soft Cover, 6x9, 152pg, Text/b&w $8.95 |
We started with three Tom Corbett titles, Volumes 1, 3 and 5 and sales were enough that we decided to bring in the entire series. Volume 8 is due later this year. If you want to just try one, the series editor recommends Volume 5, Revolt on Venus! It's his favorite.
See our website for the PS Artbooks collecting the Dell Comics series, volumes 1 and 2, both on sale [PCTCSC01H, 02H. $59, $19.95 ea]. The Tom Corbett television program kicked off in 1950, ran for five seasons, and was on ALL four U.S. networks of the day! It also launched a successful newspaper strip, a radio show (as Space Cadet), a series of Dell comic books, as well as lunch boxes, LP records, toys, promotional giveaways, and these eight science fiction novels. Advisor Willy Ley was a professional rocketry expert and spaceflight advocate. He served as technical advisor to both this book series and the television show! |

The Rise and Fall of the Trigan Empire We just got Volume 2, too late to include above. We have plenty of this new one now, thank goodness, after we ran out of Volume 1 for months. Volume 1: We're down to 4 copies, and hoping to see more soon. Oh my gosh, these are so good. The art by Don Lawrence and Ron Embelton is stunning. |
New Sale Books We're doing a special email in the next couple weeks (sign up here) featuring 60 newly discounted items. However, I just lowered prices on nearly 140 items. You can get the jump on this NOW by clicking on this link [FEBSALE] or just type or copy the keyword “FEBSALE” into the search box on our home page anytime. There are also statues by Terry Dodson and Frank Cho, just three of each. |
New "Hurt" Books We've been quietly listing new hurt books on the website, which we only feature in this weekly email when we have room to spare. Click here and you can check them all. Customers are finding them, so sometimes it allows us to close out our last copies of titles, without taking up space here in the weekly email. |
Publisher Cut Back We are going back to publishers to reorder new books and suddenly they are out of copies. This happens every so often, when publishers get very conservative on their print runs and/or their sales outstrip their print run. Case in point: The Complete Toppi Vol 4, which we can't find more copies of, yet. Fantagraphics has run out of several new titles, including A Cockeyed Menagerie: The Drawings of T.S. Sullivant. However, we still have a few copies as I write this. This applies to new titles from Boom, too. And as explained in detail earlier, back volumes of Hermes titles like The Phantom will be dropped. Our new supplier is doing a terrible job of keeping them available. Hermes tied our hands on this when they decided to stop selling direct to us, due to our complaints about damages and late shipping. |
Bad Attitude! From the director, "I'm happy to announce that my new feature film, Bad Attitude: The Art of Spain Rodriguez, will have its World Premiere during the virtual 2021 Slamdance Film Festival February 12-25." We're looking into handling this as a DVD, if it is available. I've always liked Spain's work, so this should be very interesting. We currently have all three collections of his underground comics work in stock; Volume 1 is on sale. He's also in Tales from the Berkeley-Con: we have just five left, publisher file copies from 1974 [TALBC. $15]. It also features work by Niño, Alcala, Wilson, Shelton, Rand Homes, Griffin, Brunner et al. ~Bud |
