Larry McMurtry 1936-2021

Novelist, essayist, screenwriter and bookseller. I met Larry first in his bookselling role, when he had an open used bookstore in Houston in the late 1970s or early 1980s. His first bookstore was in Georgetown, but I never made it there. A few years later, he opened his famous stores (four of them) in his hometown Archer City, Texas. That is where the novel and film The Last Picture Show were based.

I was lucky enough visit Archer City with two booksellers he knew, Maury Neville and Oscar Graham, along with Maury's wife Marsha. Larry took us on a tour of his house, signed a few things, and then we all drove up to Wichita Falls for dinner together (there are no restaurants in Archer City except a market and the Dairy Queen). He wrote his novels on old manual, portable typewriters and had several on display, as well as an impressive wall of books. This was before he won the Academy Award for co-writing Brokeback Mountain.

Out back he had a separate little place, and lo and behold, there were his comics. Turns out Larry, like many others his age, grew up in the Golden Age. He had runs of Fiction House, Rulah and Jo-Jo, lots of things. And Italian comics, since he'd lived in Italy at one time. Jungla was an Italian Sheena who starred in comics for years, and he had a long run. And perhaps most memorable, he had a couple of my catalogs there, too. He was a customer!

He ended up selling his comics via Heritage Auctions many years later. I went back to Archer City a couple more times, but admittedly, the first journey was the best, when I loaded up with good books and met Larry. The other times he wasn't around. But it was always an adventure, we'd plow through room after room of books all day. Then we'd stay overnite at the Lonesome Dove Inn, named after his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.

If you have not read it or at least seen the mini-series, you really should. Both are wonderful. The book is a masterpiece, and turned me on to reading all of Larry's western-themed books, for their gritty, realistic detail and superb characterization. The novel Lonesome Dove was followed up by two prequels and two sequels, and reading them in order is a treat. They cover the beloved Texas Rangers from Lonesome Dove, Gus and Call, from fresh young kids to their end days.
