PS Artbooks Sale Part 2!

PS Artbooks Sale Part 2!

We have finished processing 58 titles newly on sale. Most of these we've been out of for quite a long time —as much as years; a few were on sale before, but most are fresh newly discounted titles. Many are in slipcases, if that was the only way we could get them (we don’t usually stock the slipcased editions).

Part One was sent out on September 7th, and you can see it by clicking here. You can view all 58 sale titles on our site here.

We’ve added a few non-sale Softees and Facsimile Editions that are brand new. These will be listed in our weekly Thursday email, but you can get an early look here.

Thanks for looking.

ADVENTURES INTO THE UNKNOWN Volume 2
Closeout Price! Collects #6-10, 1949-50. Recommended. Foreword by publisher Peter Crowther. By Richard Hughes et al. Five more seminal issues, each 52-page, of the very first ongoing horror comic. Includes art by the notorious Paul Gatusso (Dr. Fredric Wertham used Gatusso's work as an example of cruelty in comics for his book 'Seduction of the Innocent'), John Celardo, Bob Lubbers, Charles Sultan, John Belfi, Bob Jenny, Jon Blummer, and even a story by EC's Johnny Craig and Harry Lazarus! PS Artbooks, 2012....More.

Item Code: ADU02H
Hard Cover, 7x10, 288pg, Full Color
$48.00 $24.99

ADVENTURES INTO THE UNKNOWN Volume 10
Closeout Price! Collects #51-57, 1954, the True-Vision 3D issues. Highly Recommended. Art by Harry Lazarus, Ogden Whitney, Shelly Moldoff, Ken Landau et al. Emulating 3D but in full color, ACG used black borders and figures breaking out of the panels to do a very good job of providing a 3D-like experience in 2D! These issues have always been some of the most collectible, also buoyed by outstanding artwork by Harry Lazarus in a whole bunch of stories. PS Artbooks, 2015. Out of print....More.

Item Code: ADU10H
Hard Cover, 7x10, 272 pg, Full Color
$59.99 $24.99

ADVENTURES INTO THE UNKNOWN Volume 11
Closeout Price! Collects #58-64, 1954-55. Highly Recommended. Art by Harry Lazarus, Kenneth Landau, Edmund Good, Bob Forgione et al. If anything, the comic code resulted in even better stories in this ACG title. Richard Hughes began doing many more science fiction stories, and often nice long tales that could run 10-12 pages in length. Meanwhile, artists Harry Lazarus and Kenneth Landau, today almost forgotten, were delivering highly detailed, well-drawn stories with much in common with early Al Williamson/Roy Krenkel work! Also includes two very wild "3-D Effect" issues, in full color and requiring no glasses. Now among the most highly prized issues. PS Artbooks, 2016....More.

Item Code: ADU11H
Hard Cover, 7x10, 272pg, Full Color
$59.99 $24.99

ADVENTURES INTO THE UNKNOWN Volume 12
Closeout Price! Collects #65-71, 1955-56. Highly Recommended. By Ogden Whitney, Harry Lazarus, Kurt Schaffenberger, John Rosenberger The Comics Code in general tamped down creativity and variety in comics. Stan Lee's Atlas line was a good example of this, at least until Kirby and Ditko came back on board. But for editor and writer Richard Hughes, this brought out his absolute best. Stories explored totally new avenues, with more time travel, sci-fi and excellent charactization and complex plots, He even takes 10 or 12 pages to develop a good story, rather than the industry standard of just 6 or 8. This is outstanding comics writing and one of the series I most enjoy reading now, 50 years later. PS Artbooks, 2017....More.

Item Code: ADU12H
Hard Cover, 7x10, 272pg, Full Color

ADVENTURES INTO THE UNKNOWN Volume 3 Slipcased
Closeout Price! Limited, 300! Collects #11-15, 1950-51. Recommended. Foreword by Paul Di Filippo. Here is "The Living Ghost," "Double Doom," "The Face in the Moonstone," "Menace from Mars," "The Lost Soul," "The Bride of Anubis," "Kill, Puppets, Kill," "The Affair of Room 1313," and the ongoing "True Ghosts of History" feature—with contributions from Golden Age greats Fred Guardineer, Al Feldstein, Leonard Starr, Edvard Moritz, Ogden Whitney, Ken Bald, Howard Larsen, Al Camy, Charles Sultan, Lin Streeter, and others, including 1950s Tarzan newspaper artist John Celardo! PS Artbooks, 2012. Out of Print....More.

ADVENTURES INTO THE UNKNOWN Volume 7 Slipcased
Closeout Price! Collects #31-36, 1952. Recommended. Art by Edvard Moritz, Art Gates, Al Camy, Lin Streeter, Lou Cameron and Ken Bald. Ah, they were truly the best of times. Forget the rest. Richard Hughes's groundbreaking Adventures Into The Unknown, the world's first horror anthology-title boldly stepped where no comic book had gone before. Stories include "The Faceless Legion," "Beyond the Door of Death," "The Crawling Corpse," "Marie Antoinette," "The Girl Who Died Twice," "The Lair of Lost Souls," "The Man Who Couldn't Die," "Lady of Death," "Artist of Evil," etc. Death is a popular theme, wouldn't you say? PS Artbooks, 2014. Out of print....More.

Item Code: ADU07D
Hard Cover, 7x10, 288pg, Full Color
$59.99 $29.99

ADVENTURES INTO THE UNKNOWN Volume 9 Slipcased
Closeout Price! Limited, 300! Collects #44-50, 1953. Recommended. Art by Harry Lazarus, Jon Blummer, Paul Gattuso et al. I find the level of artwork is quite good here, a notch above earlier issues and working well with the ever-interesting stories. One of the most readable titles from this period of pre-code horror. And with an occasional time travel or sci-fi story in the mix. Above-average artwork also from talented Canadian artist Edmond Good, the excellent Robert McCarty, and Ken Landau. Ken Bald, Pete Riss, Lin Streeter, Charles Nicholas, DC regular Bernard Sachs, and even Stan Lee's stalwart from Atlas, Bob Forgione. PS Artbooks, 2014. Out of Print....More.

CAPTAIN VIDEO Volume 1 Slipcased
Closeout Price! Limited, 125! Recommended. By George Evans, Martin Thall et al. Captain Video was one of the very first science fiction programs in the early days of television. . . a long, successful run from 1949 to 1955. It was so hot, Fawcett, the publisher of Captain Marvel, jumped in and put their best talent on an excellent comics series, each featuring a photo cover from the TV show, and stories by top EC artist George Evans. Today these are nonetheless very tough comics to find and expensive when you do find them. PS Artbooks, 2013. Out of Print. ...More.

Item Code: CAPV01D
Hard Cover, 7x10, 288pg, Full Color
$59.99 $29.99

FORBIDDEN WORLDS Volume 10
Closeout Price! Collects #59-64, 1957-58. Recommended. By Emil Gershwin, Ogden Whitney et al. Tales exploring science fiction, dark creatures and the supernatural as ACG thrives in the post-code world. These stories are some of the most readable and interesting from the period, even considering Stan Lee's work at Atlas. ACG editor and chief writer Richard Hughes escaped the typical clichés and presented off-beat tales—more fun to read now than most other comics of the time. PS Artbooks, 2015....More.

Item Code: FOR10H
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 7x10, 240pg, Full Color
$59.99 $24.99

FORBIDDEN WORLDS Volume 11
Closeout Price! Collects #65-70, 1958. Recommended. By Richard Hughes, Ogden Whitney et al. Tales exploring the supernatural, science fiction and more. More very readable, poignant and fun stories by the great writer/editor Richard Hughes. Whisked back to Egyptian times, seeing your mirror image as an oldster, lost on a planet of giants, or a giant among tiny aliens, apparitions, test pilot to a different dimension. Obviously sci-fi was popular in 1958, sparked by the Sputnik, and you'll find a lot of cool stories here. Very handsomely drawn by Ogden Whitney, John Forte, John Rosenberger, Harry Lazarus and others. PS Artbooks, 2016....More.

Item Code: FOR11H
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 7x10, 240pg, Full Color
$59.99 $24.99

FORBIDDEN WORLDS Volume 12
Closeout Price! Collects #71-76, 1958-59. Highly Recommended. By Al Williamson, John Buscema, Paul Reinman, Ogden Whitney, Mike Roy, John Rosenberger et al. Six new issues, more than 20 stories by the fine writer Richard Hughes and a solid stable of artists, including EC's own Al Williamson. The comics code was the best thing to happen to ACG, as it meant better and longer stories, with more characterization, depth and highly original plots. From science fiction to fantasy to the surreal—and that would be the very first appearance of Herbi, drawn by Ogden Whitney in #73. Lots of flying saucers and out of this world stories all still very readable today. PS Artbooks, 2017....More.

Item Code: FOR12H
Hard Cover, 7x10, 288pg, Full Color
$59.99 $24.99

FORBIDDEN WORLDS Volume 3 Slipcased
Closeout Price! Limited, 300! Collects #12-18, 1952-53. Recommended. By Richard Hughes. Art by Harry Lazarus, Paul Gattuso et al. We love the stories: "Were-Spider's Doom," "Invasion from Hades," "The Subway Spectres," "The Time Destroyer," "The Death Slave," "The Vampire Cat," "The Living Head." Seven full issues and 34 over-the-top horror and supernatural stories, from the peak of the pre-code horror explosion. Every kind of frightening menace and resurrected dead body was fair game in these fun and unusual stories by the fine staff at American Comics Group (ACG). PS Artbooks, 2013. Out of Print....More.

Item Code: FOR03D
Hard Cover, 7x10, 288pg, Full Color
$64.99 $29.99

FORBIDDEN WORLDS Volume 4 Slipcased
Closeout Price! Limited, 300! Collects #19-25, 1953-54. Recommended. By Richard Hughes. Art by Harry Lazarus, Ken Landau, Charles Quinlain. Covers by Ken Bald. They may have been Forbidden to some—particularly when the Wertham Seduction of the Innocent book hit the newsstands—but to kids the length and breadth of the United States, Richard Hughes and his tremblin' team of terrific tormenters were where it was at. Big time. And now, a half-century since the first issue appeared, ACG's wonderful Forbidden Worlds are accessible once more . . . and this time in state-of-the-art hardcover volumes containing seven complete issues, including all ads and letters pages. PS Artbooks, 2013. Out of print....More.

Item Code: FOR04D

$69.99 $29.99

FORBIDDEN WORLDS Volume 6 Slipcased
Closeout Price! Limited, 300! Collects #33-39, 1954-55. Highly Recommended. By Ken Landau, Paul Gustavson, Charles Nicholas, Ogden Whitney et al. Additional artwork by the great Kurt Schaffenberger and John Rosenberger, both of whom became mainstays in ACG's post code years (and superhero era) before moving on to DC Comics. Kurt became a regular artist on Superman and Lois Lane comics. Chic Stone is here, also a later ACG artist who moved on to Marvel in the 1960s, and Leonard Starr, who went on to huge fame for his syndicated strip, On Stage. PS Artbooks, 2014. Out of print....More.

Item Code: FOR06D
Hard Cover, 7x10, 288pg, Full Color
$69.99 $29.99

FORBIDDEN WORLDS Volume 8 Slipcased
Closeout Price! Limited, 300! Collects #47-52, 1956-57. Highly Recommended. By Harry Lazarus, John Rosenberger, Ogden Whitney et al. The Comics Code had spoken. But editor and writer Richard Hughes already knew how to pen unusual, offbeat stories, and barely skipped a beat moving from pre-code to cool sci-fi, fantasy and the fantastic in the early code days here. Plus some great art from the above talents and others. PS Artbooks, 2014. Out of Print....More.

Item Code: FOR08D

PRE-CODE CLASSICS JOURNEY INTO FEAR Volume 2 Slipcased
Closeout Price! Collects #8-14, 1952-53. By the Iger Shop. Walking dead folks (loads of 'em) — some of them even still sporting their heads — witches, ghosts, werewolves and enough vampires to go into the second-hand dentures business. The publisher knew beautiful girls sold, so lots of tales feature nice young ladies being threatened with every sort of ghastly peril. And often it comes to be. Another wild title from Superior, one of the most extreme of the pre-code comics publishers (which makes them the most fun). Death in every form you can possibly imagine turns up in these strange and bizarre tales. PS Artbooks, 2016. Out of print....More.

And an amazing FOUR complete stories by Jack Cole—some of the wildest and weirdest pre-code work EVER. Cole's work was a high (or low?) point of pre-code horror!! PRE-CODE CLASSICS WEIRD MYSTERIES Volume 1 Slipcased
Closeout Price! Limited, 300! Collects #1-6, 1952-53. Highly Recommended. By Basil Wolverton, Bernard Baily et al. Key Publications/Stanley Morse was a Johnny-Come-Lately to the horror comics field. To compete with the big boys, he got even more ghastly and horrible, beginning with his first title, Mister Mystery and ratcheting up the volume right here. He gave a start to a new generation of comic artists, including Andru, Esposito, John Romita and Steve Ditko (the latter two not in this volume). But he knew enough to feature two huge and important veterans: Wolverton and Baily. PS Artbooks, 2013. Out of print....More.

Here are panels used in Seduction of the Innocent ". . . she was a beautiful girl. . . with plenty to offer. . . ", another panel used in the Reader's Digest anti-comics article, "excessive violence, gore and torture," and "silhouetted nudity," They broke all the taboos! PS Artbooks, 2014. Hey, it’s all here, culture-lovers: walking dead folks (loads of 'em)—some of them even still sporting their heads — witches, ghosts, werewolves and enough vampires to go into the second-hand dentures business. Another oddball pre-code horror title, this time from tiny publisher Comic Media, who recognized the talent of Don Heck and used him for many of their best covers (and stories). They also published Danger, Horrific and Terrific, all titles well known for their extreme violence, over-the-top horror, pretty girls and more. PS Artbooks, 2016. Out of print....More.

Spaceships and saucers galore plus the wonderful artwork of the great Wallace Wood and his protégé Joe Orlando, just prior to their move to EC. The lead character, Capt. Science, is a space-faring hero. And there are back-up sci-fi stories by Myron Fass, Vince Napoli, Harry Harrison and others to fill out each issue. PS Artbooks, 2016. Out of print....More.

Rulah's sexy costume barely hangs together, there's bondage, torture, naked women, unending headlights, girl-fights, bad girls. . . There wasn't any extreme Victor Fox didn't direct his artists to explore—the same creators who were doing a similar bang-up job on Fox's other top seller, Phantom Lady! Even Roy Thomas points out his admiration for what Rulah pulled off in her bizarre adventures and how Victor Fox turned an oft-used genre (see Tarzan, Kaanga and Sheena) into something different and far more daring. Closeout Price! 1951-52. Recommended. Edited by Roy Thomas. Art by Ernie Schroeder. 29 more wild, pre-code adventures of the original swamp monster. Almost 20 years before DC's Swamp Thing brought Bernie Wrightson to fan acclaim, The Heap was creeping around towns and highways and righting wrongs, nicely eliminating bad guys (this was before the code) and all without a word of his own. He was the Frankenstein of the swamp, featured in the back pages of Airboy Comics and actually the result of a lost German pilot who was melded in swamp water and vegetation! PS Artbooks, 2013.
