John Cassaday 1971-2024

The renowned artist passed away September 9th. He was awarded Eisner Awards in 2005 and 2006 and the Eagle Award. Artist, writer, and television director, he was best known for his work on the critically acclaimed Planetary with writer Warren Ellis, Astonishing X-Men with Joss Whedon, Captain America with John Ney Rieber, and Star Wars with Jason Aaron.

Both Marvel Comics and DC Comics include many of Cassaday's iconic images in their marketing, and in their art and poster book collections. A self-taught illustrator, Cassaday listed his influences as NC Wyeth and classic pulp magazine art, among others.

San Diego Comic-Con News

My memorial to my partner and friend Jim Vadeboncoeur, Jr. was reprinted in the San Diego Con Souvenir book for 2024. Also in their memorial section were more friends: Roger Hill, Ramona Fradon (Aquaman coming), Allen Spiegel and Trina. Neil Gaiman writes a wonderful tribute to Michael Zulli, (Sandman, Puma Blues). Allen Spiegel was an art fan turned publisher, and helped to get out fine works by Jon Muth, Kent Williams, George Pratt, Phil Hale, David Mack, and Greg Spalenka.

Inducted into the Hall of Fame this year are George Tuska, James Warren, Bryan Talbot, Ron Turner (Last Gasp) and Lynn Varley.
