Arthur Szyk (pronounced "shik") made it his life's work to offend and expose the evil that was Adolf Hitler. His illustrations infuriated the fascist leader of Germany and earned Szyk a bounty on his head by the Fuhrer himself. Throughout the war years, Arthur Szyk continued his art campaign against Hitler and Nazism, gaining notoriety around the globe for his cutting art commentary. But after the war, Szyk's name and influence waned and fell into obscurity. Years later, Irvin Ungar made it his life's work to bring Arthur Szyk back from obscurity as the principal collector, dealer, scholar, and promoter of Szyk’s art in the US, Europe, and Israel. 8 CANTERBURY TALES: From The Poet Chaucer's Immortal Pilgrimage The Canterbury Tales are one of the great classics of all literature. They were written by Geoffrey Chaucer, poet, warrior, diplomat and royal pensioner, around 1387, and are famous for the pictures they give of life in the 14th century. The tales were supposed to have been told by various members of a pilgrimage to Canterbury Cathedral in England to while away the time. John Erskine, celebrated author of The Private Life of Helen of Troy, now relates these tales delightfully for the readers of The American Weekly, and Edmund Dulac, famed English painter and etcher, makes them vivid with his incomparable art. These eight illustrations were published in The American Weekly magazine in 1942. John Erskine provided his interpretation of the Tales and his essay about the Canterbury Tales from his 1928 The Delight of Great Books is included with additional illustrations. There is a further reading section which also includes illustrated editions from the early nineteenth century to the present.

I think EC's "New Direction" series, Valor, doesn't get the respect it deserves, especially living in the very tall shadow of EC's Two-Fisted Tales and Frontline Combat. These "Tales of Mortal Combat, and Deeds of... (Valor)" were edited by Al Feldstein and illustrated by EC's greatest artists: Reed Crandall, George Evans, Gardner Fox, Graham Ingels, Bernard Krigstein, Joe Orlando, Angelo Torres, Al Williamson and Wally Wood. That it only lasted five issues is a tragedy, as these were some of the most imaginative and well-illustrated tales to come from the publisher. They're all collected in one volume for a new generation to enjoy. There's a lot to like here, and it should not be overlooked! ~Marty |

Bernie Wrightson was one of comics' most talented and prolific artists, a true master of the short story format. Many of his best works were in the short story format, published by Marvel, DC, and Warren Publishing. It's his work at the latter publisher that brings us here to right now, as Dark Horse releases a new softcover edition of their Bernie Wrightson collection. These are all of Bernie's stories and features from the pages of Warren's Creepy and Eerie, many of which I read back in the early '70s when I was a subscriber to Creepy (and Famous Monsters, of course). The chilling "Jenifer" from Creepy #63, still haunts me to this day. It was written by Bruce Jones (who would go on to write the excellent "Twisted Tales" for Pacific Comics and later Eclipse), and having just re-read it today, it still holds up. As do the other tales in this collection. If you're a horror buff or Bernie fan, this one is a keeper! ~Marty |

Back in the '70s, DC and Marvel were exploring other formats, and the "Treasury Edition" was one of the field's innovations that connected with fans and collectors, until it didn't. But while it lasted, we got some of the best in classic material from days past, as well as all-new "event" volumes like Superman vs. Muhammad Ali, and the first DC/Marvel crossovers: MGM's Marvelous Wizard of Oz (1975) and Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man: The Battle of the Century (1976). This Batman "Limited Collector's Edition" treasury features some of the greatest stories from the '40s to the '70s, printed big, and loaded with bonus material. FLIGHT TO OPAR Hardcover Signed In 2015, Meteor House published the first hardcover limited edition of Philip Jose Farmer's Flight to Opar, now a long out-of-print and hard-to-find collector's item. In 2020, Meteor House began publishing much finer limited hardcover editions, featuring gold foil stamping on the leatherette covered boards, custom printed color end papers, and color interior artwork. After publishing Time’s Last Gift in 2025 and Hadon of Ancient Opar in these much nicer editions, they decided to upgrade Flight to Opar (and The Song of Kwasin in 2027) in their current manner. In addition to the new finer aspects of the book, they have also contracted with the estate of legendary artist Roy G. Will Murray - 1953-2026 |

Huge bummer, very sad to read this…Will Murray was a fountain of knowledge about pulps, as well as a prolific writer of Doc, Tarzan and Spider pastiches. Only 73, jeez. I did a search on Buds Art Books and he’s in 17 of their books, several written entirely by him. He got Tarzan back to Mars in an excellent novel. And his 2015 Tarzan Return to Pal-Ul-Don totally nailed it as a novel worthy of most of ERB’s output. It was OUR Tarzan, in a story at the very end of WWII when he’s flying home in his fighter, after his stint in the RAF as a fighter pilot….! such a great book. I don’'t think we ever met, but I bet Michelle knows him well, as a huge part of the pulp fandom. Not our best week. RIP, Will…. ~Bud |
