THE ART OF RON LESSER Volume 3 Wild, Wild, Westerns
Including rare behind-the-scenes materials and photo reference of legendary cover model, Steve Holland. By Robert Deis, Bill Cunningham and Tim Hewitt. This third volume of the Art of Ron Lesser series examines his work in the Western genre, illustrating some of the classics from writers like Luke Short, Louis L'Amour, John Benteen, J.T. Edson, and many more. This volume is a unique look into the life and work of an artist who had a powerful impact on our pop culture and framed how we look at that period of American history. Subtropic Productions, 2026....More.

Item Code: ARTRL03H
Hard Cover, 8x11, 152pg, Full Color
$55.00

Third in the series celebrating the art of Ron Lesser, this volume features some of his best works in the Western genre. Like the two volumes before it, this one is packed with plenty of examples of why Ron Lesser was one of the greats in illustration. And there's plenty of sketches and photos (including many pics of iconic Doc Savage model, Steve Holland) to reveal Lesser's process. These are wonderful art books and have become a favorite of mine since joining Bud's. Recommended! ~Marty

Volumes 1&2 are still available.

A BRUSH, WITH HISTORY: The Illustrative Art of Sandy Plunkett Signed
Signed! By Sandy Plunkett. This museum catalogue is a selection of pieces from the 2025 exhibition of Sandy Plunkett's work held by The Southwest Ohio History Center. In the 35 years that Plunkett has been located in Ohio, he has, if unintentionally, created a visual chronicle of the many non-profits, small businesses, local bands and political scandals that have come and gone from his corner of the Appalachian foothills. Each image is accompanied with anecdotal accounts of the why and wherefore behind each commission, with a peek into his process. To many who know Plunkett primarily through his work in the comic book field, this is a chance to become more familiar with the other side of his artistic career. Southeast Ohio History Center, 2025....More.

Item Code: ABRSPS
Soft Cover, 8x11, 64pg, Partial Color
$35.00

Sandy Plunkett is no stranger to comics fans, having illustrated comics for DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, IDW, and many more. What most of us were unaware of was his side gigs, doing illustrations, logos and more in his local community of Athens, Ohio. Plunkett, working with the Southwest Ohio History Center, was recently the subject of an exhibit of his local artworks, and this volume acts as a catalog for the event. It's filled with plenty of whimsical and wonderful images, most in full-color. If you're a fan, you should definitely check out this collection! ~Marty

LOST MARVELS No. 4: Gil Kane Rarities Vol. 1
Jungle Book, Ka-Zar, Gullivar and Other Rediscovered Work. First of Two Volumes! Rare Art & Stories from Over 40 Years at Marvel! Highly Recommended. Art by Gil Kane. The Lost Marvels series again delves into the misty margins of Marvel’s past to shine a light on extraordinary work that has never or rarely been collected for modern readers. This is the first volume of a compendium of some of the legendary Gil Kane’s finest storytelling from the 1970s to 2000s. Fantagraphics, 2026....More.

Item Code: LOST04H
Hard Cover, 9x12, 240pg, Full Color
$39.99 $36.99

In the early '70s, seeking out the local drugstore's comic book spinner rack was a favorite weekly adventure of mine. And many of the titles I was collecting had one thing in common, besides their sci-fi, horror and monster themes: Gil Kane covers! Kane's art was filled with a kinetic energy unlike any other. Even a prone body, their knees drawn up, arms draped to their sides, crackled with knockdown energy. These images often promised more than the interiors were prepared to deliver, but they looked damn cool anyway! This is another great Marvel collection from Fantagraphics, whose ongoing Marvel and Atlas collected editions are currently among my very favorites! ~Marty

I've been an Ultraman fan since the late '60s, when the show made its debut on our shores. I would run home from school every day to watch Ultraman on KTXL Channel 40's "Captain Mitch" afternoon show. I loved it's Godzilla-style monster action and the exploits of the badly dubbed members of the Science Patrol. I still collect Ultraman toys and videos to this day, and was pleasantly surprised when Marvel teamed up with Tsuburaya Productions to bring Ultraman to the Marvel Universe. Not since 1977's Marvel/Toho Godzilla collaboration was I this excited for a comic. If you're of a certain age (I know there's a lot of us out there), then this Omnibus should provide some nostalgic moments and new thrills. ~Marty

For the past few years, I have focused my collector's attention on low-grade comics from the '50s to the '70s, from publishers like Charlton, Tower, Marvel, DC, Dell and especially Gold Key, mostly in the horror, sci-fi, movies and TV-inspired titles (especially Hanna-Barbera characters). Now two great Dell/Gold Key reprint collections have arrived, collecting the runs from Dell's Prince Valiant and Gold Key's Zorro (featuring the art of Alex Toth). These are both great collected editions, with restored art and new coloring. The Prince Valiant volume is particularly gorgeous in its reproduction, with Bob Fujitani's Hal Foster-inspired art really shining through. I highly recommend both! ~Marty

KAMANDI By Jack Kirby Omnibus New Printing
NEW PRINTING! Collects Kamandi #1-40 (1972-77). Recommended. By Jack Kirby. After shaking the very foundations of the DC Universe in the 1970s with his classic "Fourth World" titles, comics titan Jack "King" Kirby redirected his unstoppable artistic energy into an all-new series that would prove to be one of his most enduring creations - the post-apocalyptic world of Kamandi, the Last Boy on Earth! This deluxe omnibus edition collects issues #1-40 of the beloved classic post-apocalyptic series, and features informative essays from acclaimed artist and storyteller Bruce Timm and longtime Kirby collaborator/inker, Mike Royer. DC Comics, 2026. Due: Aug....More.

Item Code: KAMOH
Hard Cover, 8x12, 896pg, Full Color
$125.00 $110.00
When Jack Kirby went back to DC in the early '70s, I was slow to catch on to his Fourth World saga. I was still in "monster mode" in those days, so superhero comics were new to me. But one title by Jack immediately caught my attention: Kamandi, The Last Boy on Earth. Sure, it was an "homage" to Planet of the Apes... but this post-apocalyptic masterpiece soon became an obsession for me, leading to my gathering the entire collection in a weekend between a neighbor selling her son's collection, a used bookstore, and a 7-Eleven where I bought the most recent issue at the time (late in the run when Kirby was no longer doing covers). This is Kirby at his most imaginative and jubilantly free to do whatever he wanted. This is just a FUN series, with lots of action, humor, and great characters. I'm glad DC is keeping this in print because it really does deserve it. Why this series never became an animated series (like the Kirby-designed Thundar the Barbarian) is a mystery to me. But it could still happen! ~Marty

Message From Bud!

Hi, everyone! Bud Plant here. I actually write the Rare Books entry each week and I pick out the items to promote. And Marty adds his excellent editing. However, this week I am at the San Diego Comic Con to receive my Eisner Hall of Fame award, and to give a panel talk today. So I’m keeping this short while I'm on "sabbatical" this week.

Also, my thanks to the many of you—friends and customers, and friends who are customers and visa-versa—who received the Eisner Award e-mail that the guys here sent out earlier this week (unbeknownst to me!). A great many of you have left wonderful messages (and fun graphics) on the "Kudos" page. It is linked again here. You can still leave your messages for me. You can’t know how nice it has been to hear from everyone. I’ve replied to many of you and will continue to do so as I find time during this busy weekend.

With that said, on to this week’s Rare Books!

We have three new featured items this week that tie in nicely with various out-of-print editions available in Rare Books. These would be Prince Valiant: Peril of the Round Table, Zorro Remastered Edition (and linked into Alex Toth, who may just be the best Zorro artist ever), and of course, everything Edgar Rice Burroughs with the new Opar book. I know these links also find new books associated with these subjects, but scroll down and you’ll find the Rare Books!
