THE TOON TREASURY OF CLASSIC CHILDREN'S COMICS
New printing, fist published in 2009. Edited by Art Spiegelman. Our Highest Recommendation. This This unprecedented collection of the greatest comics for kids and youngsters (and you adults too!) was artfully compiled by two of the best-known creators in publishing and the field of comics, Art Spiegelman and Françoise Mouly, who also contribute a funny foreword that they call "Out of the Trash and into a Treasury." The comics have been culled from the 1940s through the early 1960s and feature the best examples of works by Carl Barks, John Stanley, Sheldon Mayer, Walt Kelly, Basil Wolverton, and George Carlson, among many, many others. Humorous stories range from a single page to eight or even twenty-two pages, each complete and self-contained. Pogo, Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge, and Dennis the Menace are among the favorites here. SUPER MYSTERY COMICS Volume 1
Collects #1-3, 1940-43. Highly Recommended. Art by Harry Lucey, Malcolm Kildale, Al Fagaly, Lou Ferstadt et al. Here are the first 3 issues of one of the more desirable titles of the Golden Age — it's become one of the key titles to collect, perhaps in part because Superman artist Jim Mooney will come along in the next volume with his earliest work. From Ace Magazines, this was a solid well-drawn title packed with first appearances of Magno the Magnetic Man, the electrifying crusader of justice; Q-13, American Spy Fighter, battling foreign saboteurs with brains and brawn; Flint of the Mounties, bringing law and order to the wild frontier; and Vulcan "Sky" Smith, fearless ace of the skies. The Black Spider begins in #3. PS Artbooks, 2025....More.

With a blend of clever storytelling, moral battles, and a touch of the supernatural, these classic tales showcase the Kid’s imaginative and strategic use of his abilities and famous characters of history to confound evildoers. They even meet a demon from another dimension in a cool story. It’s hysterical history as Alley Oop takes a colonel’s command in Napoleon’s army, plunders the treasures of Tripoli with the help of lovely harem girls, becomes a buccaneer on the Spanish Main but then is shipwrecked on a desert island...to find himself face to face with Roberta Crusoe?! This cute young thing and he together sail off the island but soon Alley ends up in a cannibal tribe's cooking pot without Roberta. What's Oola have to say about all this cute lady Crusoe? Well, Alley escapes her wrath and sends himself back to Moo in the time machine... More wonderful artwork and fantasy from Hamlin, at the top of his game. Acoustic Learning, 2025....More.

A daring escape on a magic carpet through the fourth dimension takes Alley to ancient Egypt, where the locals build a monument to him — a monument known as the Sphinx! But when Alley is captured by the wicked Baron, can the valiant Sir Clank save Alley from the dungeons of Ravensbeak Castle? ALLEY OOP AND THE ISLAND OF DINNYS 1973 Dave Graue

This new release jumps back in time to some of Dave's earliest solo work! Alley Oop takes a trip to ancient Loch Ness with his own monsters in tow! Then it's an accidental journey to an island of dinosaurs with a strangely familiar look on each and every one! Phillip José Farmer

SAVAGEOLOGY Deluxe Signed Hardcover
Signed by Will Murray, Bellerophon, Carey, Eckert, Howell, Sardanas, and Welch! Limited, 200. Recommended. Philip José Farmer had two great literary loves, Tarzan and Doc Savage. He wrote biographies, pastiches, and authorized novels about each and continually referenced both of his heroes throughout his career. In 2021, Meteor House published The Man Who Met Tarzan, a collection of Farmer’s articles, essays, letters, and speeches about Edgar Rice Burroughs and Tarzan. Now we discover Farmer’s writings about Doc (excluding the biography Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life and authorized novel Escape from Loki): essays, pastiches, and even a screen treatment for the second, unmade Doc Savage film! TIME'S LAST GIFT Deluxe Signed Hardcover
Signed by Bob Eggleton & the four contributors! Limited to just 200 copies. Our Highest Recommendation. By Philip José Farmer. Cover by Bob Eggleton. Hardcover, wrap-around dust jacket, leatherette binding with gold foil stamping, custom printed color end papers. A high quality collectible in the tradition of Meteor House’s prior limited edition hardcovers. I don't want to give this away—but fans of the Edgar Rice Burroughs universe—like me—should REALLY enjoy this. Not only is it an outstanding time travel story, but Farmer has pulled a real number here. As you may know, he's a big ERB fan—in A Feast Unknown he did something similar with favorite fictional characters. This is even better. -Bud. Three men and a woman travel on board a timeship from the future of 2070 AD back to to 12,000 BC! For these anthropologists, it's a chance to study primitive man, the wild creatures and the very different world they inhabit. But none of them was prepared for what they would encounter, or for the impact of their travels in time that had yet to come... And one of the travelers is a thinly veiled very famous fictional character! A prequel to Philip José Farmer’s Ancient Opar series and a big fan favorite, first published in 1972 in paperback. Roy Krenkel

THE FANTASTIC ART OF ROY G KRENKEL Limited Edition
Limited Edition, slipcased, with seperate hardcover sleeve containing a unique original pen & ink drawing. Highly Recommended. With nearly five hundred pieces of art, including sixteen foldouts, this is the definitive collection for fans of and newcomers to the virtuoso fantasy artist — curated by Craig Yoe, with a foreword by Sara Frazetta and a preface by Michael Wm. Kaluta. If master draftspersons of the Renaissance were reincarnated to create sword-and-sorcery art of more contemporary times, they would have had Roy Krenkel as their mentor. RGK defined the term "an artist’s artist," and comics artists ardently study his incredible work. Roy filled the pages of the pro-zine/fanzine Amra with his favorite art — collected here are the complete Amra illustrations. Amra was devoted to Robert E. Howard & other sword & sorcery authors and subjects, edited by George Scithers, who also published Roy’s first art book, Cities and Scenes of the Ancient World. Dark Horse, 2025....More.

DAREDEVIL COMICS Volume 2 Hardcover
Collects #2-13, 1941-42. Highly Recommended. The Golden Age Daredevil was created by Jack Binder, brother of Otto. Here was also one of the great villains of the Golden Age, The Claw, even nastier than The Joker — he fought DD again and again. We also get early horror comics, Nazi covers and Remember Pearl Harbor as they came out just as the U.S. entered WWII. As a child, Bart Hill was witness to his parents' brutal murder. The murderer also branded Bart with a hot iron, leaving a boomerang-shaped scar on the left side of his chest. This traumatic experience left the boy mute. He trained his entire life in the art of the boomerang, eventually becoming a master boomerang marksman. He then donned a costume and took to the streets as the vigilante crime-fighter known as Daredevil. From the creators of Crime Does Not Pay, the company's greatest superhero, who lasted into the 1950s. HITMAN By Garth Ennis and John McCrea Omnibus Volume 2
Collects Hitman #34-60 and much more, 1999-2020. By Garth Ennis. Art by John McCrea. While writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon were changing the creator-owned comics game in the mid-1990s with DC Vertigo series Preacher, Ennis also put his sardonic stamp on superheroes with Hitman, teaming with acclaimed artist John McCrea to introduce superpowered ex-military operative Tommy Monaghan, who used his X-ray vision and telepathy as a hired gun on the streets of Gotham. Hitman stands as one of the most unique and beloved comics of its era, and this omnibus volume features the second half of the ongoing series, along with a comprehensive collection of spin-offs and related stories, including Hitman’s encounters with the Justice League and Lobo. Rick Norwood

The long, long time publisher of Comics Revue is having health issues that are preventing future issues from coming out. To be honest, it doesn’t sound good. Rick’s been around for a long, long time and you know how many people we’ve already seen drop out of our industry. Rick also published the huge 3-volume Prince Valiant series and has been one of our sources for books for decades. We wish him the very best.

Rick also started the V.T. Hamlin Alley Oop reprint series. Fortunately it's passed on to his colleague, as you can see above, who is doing a fine job of releasing timely new collections.

I’ve been slabbed! And Upcoming Events

I wanted to tell you so much about the two shows we just attended. First, CXC – Cartoon Crossroads Columbus — where I received the Thomas Spurgeon Award. We had a wonderful time and Anne and I marveled at the treasures at the Billy Ireland Museum. It is devoted entirely to comic strip and comic book art. They were so, so very generous to fly us there, put us up and treat us like famous artists or writers! I'll work up a page on our site as soon as I can, with pictures and more details.

A week later, we were off again for the annual OAFCon in Oklahoma. As usual, a wonderful show of vintage comics and materials, and us vintage collectors. Last year I signed a 1983 catalog for a friend there; he had it graded and encapsulated by CGC—complete with signature guarantee!

Download Catalog Download Catalog

Without more research, I have to say this may be a first for one of my catalogs. As much as I dislike the slabbing process, I’ll admit I am getting a big kick out of feeling graded and sealed in plastic! Here are pics from OAF. More on that show too, but meanwhile we leave for the Union Station Rare Books show in Los Angeles (Oct 4-5) on Thursday morning, so I have to run. See our Upcoming Events link for this and the Seattle Book Fair October 18-19.

Art director Yoji Takeshige supervised the selection, which includes art from each of Studio Ghibli's twenty-seven films, from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) to The Boy and the Heron (2023). Limited Edition based on the 1895 Folio Edition. Our Highest Recommendation. By Anton Seder. Text by Thomas Negovan. Oversized magenta leather with gilt embossing, inset round color images, gold page edges. Psychedelic starfish, omniscient owls, sinuous dragons, and bizarre imaginary sea creatures! A nearly unknown German professor of art drew this brilliant, almost mind-boggling portfolio of Art Nouveau-inspired images. The subjects often tip in the realm of fantasy. Every page is worth framing. This is the first time this work has been collected in book form; this deluxe book includes close-up, high-resolution details that allow you to immerse yourself in Seder's beautiful and strange visions of creatures both real and imagined. From 1895-1899, Professor Anton Seder painstakingly labored to create a series of groundbreaking artworks depicting all manner of creatures magical and mundane. Century Guild, 2025. ...More.

ART NOUVEAU The Architecture of Modern Life
Highly Recommended. This is the first book to expand the scope of Art Nouveau architecture and design beyond its traditional canon, covering 23 countries and featuring newly commissioned photography. Collects #30-35, 1952-53. Our Highest Recommendation. Foreword by Joe Kubert! Before Two-Fisted Tales burst onto the scene in 1950, war comics were largely unsophisticated, focusing only on action and adventure/wartime propaganda. But under the editorial direction of Harvey Kurtzman — who also penned the majority of the stories therein — Two-Fisted Tales dared to examine all the horror and madness of war, from ancient times to the Civil War to WWI, WWII and Korea. Published at the start of 1935, New Fun Comics #1 made history as the first comic book made up of new stories instead of reprints of newspaper comic strips. SPECTRES By Tran Nguyen
Recommended. A curated collection of over 110 smaller artworks made in the past decade. Each painting is a means of exploration, a study whose purpose is to develop a deep understanding of new media. The works depict loosely rendered female portraits or, occasionally, animals. They were created without the restraints imposed by extensive preliminaries that Tran often adheres to as part of her standard illustration process. This study series started out as an outlet for trying new ideas, materials, color palettes and substrates, without the looming pressure of perfection or deadlines. They fulfill Tran's need to be adventurous, which allows her to stumble with her brushstrokes and evolve as an artist. Flesk, 2025. Due: Oct....More.

WALT KELLY'S ADVENTURES OF PETER WHEAT Volume 2
Closeout Price! Collects #15-27, 1948-51. Highly Recommended. Walt Kelly's Peter Wheat comics are renowned for their humor and artistic flair, appealing to both children and adults, as well as their incredible scarcity. Never before have they been collected. Between 1948 and 1951, Kelly drew thirty-five issues of The Adventures of Peter Wheat, a sixteen page comic book given away to bakeries to promote Peter Wheat bread. The stories were fairy tales starring Peter Wheat, an elf-sized boy who lived in a hollow tree on the edge of a wheat field where he and the Little Folk battled Dragonel, Queen of the Hornets. R/EVOLUTION THE ART OF JON FOSTER Hardcover
Closeout Price! Recommended. Edited by Cathy and Arnie Fenner, and Irene Gallo. Jon Foster creates irresistibly dark demimondes populated by retro robots, Star Wars villains, and creepy goth-inspired creatures that recall the work of James Gurney (Dinotopia), Rick Berry, H. R. Giger, and past masters of the grotesque like Goya. Yet his work is inimitably his own, from the noirish lighting, off-kilter angles, and kinetic sense of movement to his singular technique of starting a project with oils and then scanning it into a computer to add more startling visual effects. The Comics Journal Interview

Writer Zack Rabiroff interviewed me at length back in early July, in response to my declaration that I’d be retiring in early 2026. That interview just came out this week and it is up on the Comics Journal website here. There are a few errors which I point out below, and I did elaborate a bit more on a few points, for anyone interested. Here’s my note back to Zack as I read the interview:

Download Catalog

I was 15, not 14 when we opened Seven Sons in March 1968, as was one of the other partners, Jim Buser, who pointed that out to me. We both had to take a bus or hitch a ride with an older friend to get to the store and work.

When we did the interview I was in Grass Valley, where I have lived since 1975, it was not conducted “ “from his home in San Jose.”

The Rocket’s Blast was not founded by Buddy Saunders, but rather by G.B. Love.

“theme market” should read Flea Market

Recycle Books was the name of a store in San Jose where I bought my copy of Zap #1, the first underground I ever read, shortly after it came out. All downhill from there!

My math was off. It was “all the way to the east coast to make $1200” at the two shows, Oklahoma Multi-Con and New York Comic Art Convention. Big Money in those days!

Seuling is mispelled in the next paragaph, it’s not Sueulling

Squadron, oops, that would be the fanzine Squa Tront

(Squa Tront was a zine devoted to EC Comics and their horror and science fiction comics, which had come out from the late 1940s until 1955). Squa Tront was what aliens would say to one another when they were surprised, just like the humans in the story would say “Oh, My God” or “Good Lord”. Aliens would say “Squa Tront” or “Spa Fon” which in fact was ANOTHER EC Comics fanzine, both of which began in the very late 1960s.)

fan ines Should be fanzines

"I had to pull a shitload of…" - should read, I had to pulp a shitload of First Kingdom back issues; I kept about 500 of each for future sales, but I was never going to sell 1000-2000 or more of several of the later issues. They went into a dumpster — hopefully to be recycled but that could have been pre-recycling days.

Same thing on Promethean -- should read Promethean #5 -- due to the Crumb interview we upped the print run to 3000 or maybe even 5000 copies, I don’t remember now. It was way more than we could sell through the existing limited distribution system consisting solely of Phil Seuling and myself in 1974.

The other issues of Promethean were much smaller print runs and sold out relatively quickly.

"already, and all those guys were there". - should read, all these underground comics artists and writers were there, in the Bay Area, so why not make the show an Underground Artists show as well as regular comics.

"didn't take my accounts payables" - should read accounts receivables (meaning the money that stores owed to me for comics shipped to them).

"What’s 4% of that," - should read 3% of that

Generally artists have always appreciated being on the cover of one of our catalogs. Exceptions are Disney, who said NO, period. And Ellie Frazetta—even though a friend, she wanted $10,000 for what every other artist let us do for free. And I was promoting her Underwood Frazetta books, so she’d get more sales in theory…but, hey, different times than the early days.

Michael Gilbert (Mr. Monster), Ken Steacy (Jonny Quest, Astroboy) and Paul Chadwick (Concrete) all drew special covers for us. Our good friend, artist Dan Brereton has just insisted on doing a cover for what could be our last regular catalog (with an extra 16 pages!) under my auspices...coming in October/November.….
