CRUMB A CARTOONIST'S LIFE

Our Highest Recommendation. By Dan Nadel. The first biography of Robert Crumb, one of the most profound and influential artists of the 20th century, whose iconic, radically frank and meticulously rendered cartoons and comics inspired generations of readers and cartoonists. Now, for the first time, Dan Nadel, a curator and writer specializing in comics and art, shares how this complicated artist survived childhood abuse, fame in his twenties, more fame, and came out the other side intact. Including forty-five stunning black-and-white images throughout and a sixteen-page color insert featuring images both iconic and obscure. Scribner, 2025....More.

Highly Recommended. For the first time ever, ten full years—632 pages—of Herriman’s Krazy Kat Sunday pages, his best and brightest work, in large 10x14 size. One of the first comics to be considered a work of art, Krazy Kat delights with its characterization and visual-verbal creativity alongside the slapstick shenanigans between Krazy and Ignatz the mouse. This book comes with an illustrated introduction by Alexander Braun. Taschen, 2025. Rush Service and International shipping could require an additional charge. Due: May....More.

Here is the mid-1950s super-hero revival featuring The Human Torch, Captain America, Sub-Mariner, Fighting American, The Avenger, Strongman, Nature Boy, Black Cobra, Phantom Lady, The Flame, Samson, Wonder Boy, Tomboy, and Captain Flash, with art by John Romita, John Buscema, Bill Everett, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, Mike Sekowsky, Mort Meskin, Bob Powell, and other comic book greats! ORGY PLUS MASSACRE Volume 1 1950-1956
By G.H. Janus. A sampler of sexy, scary and sensational films from the years 1950 to 1979, three of the most consequential decades in film history. It was during these years that global cinema came of age, not only in the technological sense but especially by way of pushing back pre-war restrictions of censorship, so much so that by the end of the 1960s, explicit sex and graphic violence had both become accepted in the mainstream. The book is divided into five sections: Horror, Science Fiction, Mayhem (delinquency, crime, murder, atrocity), Myth (fantasies of other worlds and time periods), and last but not least, Sex (nudity, sexploitation, adult). Nudity. Deicide Press, 2025. Mature Readers....More.

News & Notes

Carol Day by David Wright

We did such a good job of talking this up, we blew out all of our initial shipment! Pretty good for a British artist nearly unknown in the U.S. We have a bunch more coming in shortly (from England) so order it with confidence -- you’ll have one as soon as we can get it to you. Limited to 500. We’re also going to bring in a deluxe edition of a complete story from the series; we’ll announce that shortly. It’s also severely limited.

Sky Masters

We also blew through our stock of Sky Masters, but only because a third of our order came in with dented corners. We have more coming as I write this.

RIP - Robert McGinnis

Famed paperback cover and movie poster artist Robert McGinnis passed away this week at the age of 99.

McGinnis’s artwork is instantly recognizable to most Americans. His paintings have for decades graced many an airport bookrack, and his movie posters for You Only Live Twice, Thunderball, Barbarella, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and The Odd Couple are classics of the genre.

His illustrations have appeared in magazines as diverse as Playboy, Saturday Evening Post, and Guideposts, while his works of fine art reside in major museums and collections around the world. His latest art book has gone out of print, but we have 3 copies of his first art book by Arnie Fenner for Underwood Books, now 20% off. $100 (VG+/VFN), $120 (Near Fine/VFN) to $140 (as new). The first grade is the jacket condition; the 2nd is the book condition. Published in 2000.

Infected by Art

The latest release is Volume 12 and we’re featuring a wonderful Greg Hildebrandt piece from it on our next catalog cover, the Late Spring issue. It should be available to download by next week. I’ve just discontinued the earlier volumes since they’ve slowed down, so act now if you are missing any.

Shipping Rates

We just raised our basic shipping rates by $1 on the lower end, making the minimum shipping now $5.95 and our upper rates by $2, making the top rate $18.95 for $200-$299.99. Foreign rates may need to go up too, but for now they remain the same.

For now we still offer free shipping on orders over $300 within the U.S., as we have for quite a few years now! But with rates going up, we may have to raise that minimum at some point to $400 or $500. Just an FYI…

SKY MASTERS OF THE SPACE FORCE The Complete Sunday Strips in Color
New Edition, larger size with 16 bonus pages in color. Our Highest Recommendation. By Dave Wood. Art by Jack Kirby and Wally Wood. The Sky Masters newspaper strip is one of the most fascinating and obscure works by comics legend Jack Kirby. Created and developed by Kirby with writer Dave Wood at the beginning of 1958 while Kirby was working for National (DC), the Sky Masters daily strip debuted on September 8 of that year. Five months later, on February 8, 1959, the color Sunday strips arrived featuring a totally independent story line from the dailies. The strip narrates, with a realistic approach, the adventures of Major Sky Masters during the early days of space exploration in the late 1950s, just as a new front opened in the Cold War between the U.S. and U.S.S.R.: a frenzied space race. Here is more from Dave Stevens, the #1 good girl artist ever.

We’ve priced these sketchbooks below what you’ll see them for online, if you can find them at all. These just came from the original publisher’s inventory and we THINK we can get at least a few more copies of each--maybe.

We also got copies of Sketchy Characters: Artwork of Juanjo Guarnido - Signed but they turned out to be damaged, so we’ll announce them when the new shipment gets here. They will be $20.

Big Wow is a convention put on in San Jose, California. The promoters would often bring in major U.S. and European artists as guests. These sketchbooks were part of that initiative and what did not sell at the event went into limbo until these came to light for us.

Click here to see more from Jim Silke and Dave Stevens and Pablo Marcos, DeZuniga, Pablo Marcos and even a Sgt. Rock horror GN by Risso! The only artist we don’t have another book with would be Lauffrey, but I bet he’s in a Spectrum or an Infected by Art. We can’t list every contributor in those so a search won’t spot them! But you can look online for more of Lauffrey’s work; try Google Images. That is always where I look first.

Mature Readers

No new books this week, but in Rare Books you’ll find The Good Ship Venus ($20), Rear Ends ($25), The Panty Sutra ($20), The Unexpurgated Carl Barks (yes, he did some naughty girlie things back before Disney) ($80), Lost Girls w/slipcase ($100).

DOLL MAN Volume 4
Collects #10-12, 1946-47. Highly Recommended. Art by Reed Crandall, Bill Ward, Al Bryant et al. Top notch artwork on a classic 40's feature. Not only did he headline Feature Comics for a decade, he got his own title, this one, which lasted into the 1950s also. And bonus: Bill Ward's sexy Torchy is here as a backup feature — she first appeared in Dollman #8 in 1946 and also appeared starting in Modern Comics #43. A captivating mix of science fiction, adventure, bad girls, and unique heroics. Follow the adventures of Darrel Dane, the brilliant scientist who can shrink to six inches tall while retaining his full strength, as he and his lovely girlfriend Martha battle villains and protects the innocent in these classic tales.
