ATLAS COMICS LIBRARY Volume 5 Police Action
Our Highest Recommendation. Edited by Dr. Michael J. Vassallo. Pre-Code cops and robbers' action from the early 1950s! This is the fifth stand-alone genre-themed collection in Fantagraphics’ archival series of mid-century Marvel Comics. Police Action had a seven-issue run of violent and noir-ish morality plays, pitting the officers of the law against the forces of urban malevolence. With the cream of the Atlas freelance roster, including Joe Maneely, Robert Q. Sale, Gene Colan, Art Peddy, Mort Lawrence, Carl Burgos, Don Heck, Werner Roth and Bob Powell. Plus an extraordinary sixteen page introduction as Vassallo examines the entire history of Timely's crime pulps & magazines, crime comics in general, and all of Atlas's crime comics—with dozens and dozens of rare covers. ATLAS COMICS LIBRARY Volume 4 War Comics #1
Our Highest Recommendation. Major Historical Essay by Dr. Michael J. Vassallo. Forged in the crucible of the Korean War, and produced by veterans of the Second World War, this volume's eight issues present the brutality and grimness of armed combat by some of Atlas' most notable war artists and future Marvel Age stars: Gene Colan, Russ Heath, Joe Maneely, Dave Berg, Jay Scott Pike, Mike Sekowsky, et al. Propaganda abounds from the very first story, published in War Comics #1 in September 1950: "Peril in Korea," a primer explaining why the US joined the conflict. Other highlights include Colan's "The Chips are Down" and "Victory," Heath's "Alone" and "No Survivors," Maneely's "Stormy Weather," Henkel's "Total Destruction," and Berg's "The Infantry's War." Across five issues of Space Squadron (and one of Space Worlds), George Tuska, Werner Roth and Allen Bellman (with back-up features by Joe Maneely, Christopher Rule, George Klein and Vern Henkel) portrayed Captain Jet Dixon and his Space Squadron blasting into action, facing cosmic threats like "The Armada of Death," "The Space Demons," "Terror from the Deep," "The Temptress of Jupiter," and "The Midnight Horror." Recommended. By Edgar P. Jacobs. Here are the most emblematic early adventures: the two-part Mystery of the Great Pyramid, and above all, the incredible Yellow M, a classic that propelled its author into the ranks of bande dessinée greats. Graphic quality, narrative rigor, constant dramatic tension, and that touch of the unreal that are the trademark of the series — it's all there. ATLAS COMICS LIBRARY Volume 8 Snafu
Collects the complete Snafu, #1-3, 1955-56. Highly Recommended. When Harvey Kurtzman and Bill Gaines launched EC’s Mad comic book as a warmly received satirical magazine, a flood of imitators soon filled newsstands, but the first and best to follow in Mad’s footsteps (coinciding with the second issue of Mad magazine) was Snafu, edited and written by Kurtzman’s former boss: Stan “The Man” Lee! Snafu was packed with Marvel/Atlas’ top humor creators and, following the Mad playbook, filled pages with ad and news spoofs, alongside film, television, and book parodies like “The Blackboard Forest” by Russ Heath, “Pete Kelsey’s Booze” and “Bleed, You Bum!” by Joe Maneely, “Drugnet” by Howie Post, “Emily Toast’s Etiquette Page” by John Severin, and “Snafu’s Lovely Ladies” by Bill Everett, with production supervised by Marie Severin. And meet Mike "Ice" Phillips — one of the few brave souls who stayed with the series until nearly its end. It’s the war that defined a generation — where the heroes may not be super, but they’re all too human. The men of the 23rd Infantry Division face a battle for survival, complete with flashbacks on the front, worries in the world back home and murder in the ranks. News & Notes

Diamond in the News

They’ve now been sold to Ad Populum, and it looks so far like the new company will keep Diamond going mostly as is. The toy division and games divisions have been split off and may not continue. Marvel, DC and IDW products will no longer be distributed by Diamond, but will be exclusive from Random House/Penguin. But this has no effect on us, because we already buy all those products direct from Random House/Penguin…as we do with 95% of the other items Diamond has traditionally distributed. The publishers left with Diamond that we do buy are Dynamite and a couple other small outfits, and so far, those books are all coming through pretty much as normal.

EC Comics Weird Fantasy XXL Edition

We announced this previously with the addition of a 100-copy bookplate signed by editor Grant Geissman. Taschen has kicked this forward by several months; instead of August/September 2025, we are now looking at March 2026 perhaps at the earliest. If you’ve reserved a copy, we’re happy to credit you back your cost if you prefer it.

That said, advance orders will go out in order of payment and the numbered bookplates will also go out in order. Grant gets #1 and I get #2, but beyond, the date of your order will determine your bookplate number. So….

Grant also told us that his outstanding -- and out of print -- The History of EC Comics will be coming out next in a smaller lower cost edition. We’ll announce it as soon as we have details.

Upcoming Events

In Sacramento next week is the ECOF Edgar Rice Burroughs show.

Mid-June Anne and I will be in Portland for the Rose City Book Fair.

August 2nd or 3rd we’ll be back at the Berkeley Comic Book Show.

And I’m walking the floor of Terrificon, mostly likely August 8 (Aug 8-10, Uncasville/Mohegan Sun Expo Center, CT) in mid-August. But we won’t exhibiting there.

Keep up with our upcoming events here.

Jack Katz (1927-2025)

Don’t miss our farewell to Jack Katz here on our website. We have some great pictures there, one with Jack Kirby and another with Director Frank Capra, and links to two excellent obituaries on icv2 and in The New York Times. There’s a documentary of his career in the works and we hope to have some commentary from the creator coming soon.
