ILLUSTRATORS QUARTERLY #46 Bob Fingerman
Recommended. Bob Fingerman is an indie cartoonist who Harvey Kurtzman discovered amongst his students! Fingerman has worked for just about every major and minor comics and magazine publication in the US, and while artists like Dan Clowes and Peter Bagge achieved greater visibility, Fingerman's work is of equal merit. IQ then heads over to London's Cartoon Museum to meet its cartoonist-in-residence, Dark Horse contributor Mark Stafford. His fun avant-garde work is well covered here. His work includes Cherubs with Bryan Talbot, Lovecraft adaptations, Lip Hook and The Bad Bad Place, Hocus Pocus Ads, Great Moments in Dope History, etc. I think any fan of EC and horror comics may very much like his work; horror with a humor vibe. - Bud. DAISY GOES TO THE MOON
Embossed cover. Recommended. Adapted and illustrated by Rick Geary. In 1919, Victorian author Daisy Ashford (1881-1972) published a book she co-wrote with her parents at 9 years old to great success. None other than J.M. Barrie (Peter Pan) was enchanted by the manuscript — "brimming with the solecisms and malapropisms of infantile naivete, while infused with a keen sense of observation from a lavishing resplendent bygone era." He was intrumental in its publication. Inspired by her imaginative adventure, writer Mathew Klickstein and cartoonist Rick Geary have created a delightful graphic novel, in which little Daisy goes to outer space, visits the cosmic automat, watches TV with a time traveler, and more! Over the next four decades, his artwork was used for thousands of paperback book covers, movie posters, magazines, and advertisements. Many great artists once made a good living doing such illustration artwork and Ron Lesser is among the greatest. He’s also one of the few who are still alive and still painting. New and Back in Stock from Leslie Cabarga

WILD GIRL: WILHEMINA OF THE RIVER BOTTOM Signed
Signed! 1st orders will include a full color oversized bookmark! Recommended. Leslie Cabarga resurrects this legend from obscurity in eight hand drawn and photo-fummetti stories, spanning the years 1897-2027. Wilhemina the wild waif, abandoned in various far-away forests by random negligent moms, and one totally screwy mad scientist, grows to adulthood never having seen another human being — or clothing! That is, until her bucolic, idyllic, idiosyncratic, existence hurls this savage daughter into the modern world. Cabarga has drawn four comics stories spoofing such classics as The Yellow Kid, Betty Boop, Anime, and 60s psychedelic European comics, with four "fumetti" or photo-comics. They include a spurious 1924 German silent film, an improbable 1960s TV sitcom, an alleged documentary, and a sci-fi fantasy about a Wild Female Cyborg called Wilderella who conquers the world in her "birthday suit!" Iconoclassics, 2025. Mature Readers....More.

THE ATLAS COMICS LIBRARY Volume 5 Police Action
Our Highest Recommendation. Edited by series editor Dr. Michael J. Vassallo. Pre-Code cops and robbers' action from the early 1950s! This is the fifth stand-alone genre-themed collection in Fantagraphics’ archival series of mid-century Marvel Comics. Police Action had a seven-issue run of violent and noir-ish morality plays, pitting the officers of the law against the forces of urban malevolence. With the cream of the Atlas freelance roster, including Joe Maneely, Robert Q. Sale, Gene Colan, Art Peddy, Mort Lawrence, Werner Roth and Bob Powell. Fantagraphics, 2025. Due: Mar....More.

EC COMICS LIBRARY WEIRD SCIENCE Volume 1 XXL Signed
Collects Weird Science #1-11, 1950-52. Oversized 11x16. Our Highest Recommendation. By Grant Geissman. Art by Wood, Feldstein, Kamen, Orlando, Kurtzman et al. Reproducing the initial eleven issues of the world’s first true science-fiction comic, this seminal collection exemplifies the genre’s Golden Age. Full of vivid artistry and narrative twists, the trailblazing series features wildly imaginative tales of nuclear apocalypse, interstellar adventures, and glittering utopias. Rather than recolor the artwork, this edition works with super-high-resolution photographs of each page as it was printed more than half a century ago, using modern retouching techniques to correct problems with the era’s inexpensive, imperfect printing. The result is a pristine product, keeping the character and feel of the classic issues, but freshly printed by a world-class press oversized, nearly twice the original size. Taschen, 2025. This is the first release in Taschen’s next big project, reprinting the EC Comics in oversized XXL editions. Author Grant Geissman (The History of EC) is going to do a limited edition bookplate with us again -- we are still working out details! And big news, he has sent EC Fan Addict off to Fantagraphics, Roger Hill’s last issue. We’re looking at an August release on that at the earliest. We’ll do another bookplate for that also, like we did for the last two issues, but we’re not taking orders yet. The Deluxe Edition is limited to 1000 with a special slipcase, but we have no more details right now. I’ll keep you posted.

Orders for the EC Library will be filled numerically beginning with the earliest numbered bookplates. If you want an early number, order early. Taschen has changed our discount so that only our initial order will be discounted at $180; these will go to $200 once our first order is spoken for. We may do just 100 like on The History of EC; these went fairly quickly and the entire edition is now sold out. We hope to see it in a new $80 or $30 edition, which is Taschen’s usual methodology.

Mature Readers

New this week: Topless Summer Love Girls (signed)…a book we brought back in, in conjunction with Carbarga’s new Wild Girl above (which is also filled with nudity, but nothing more suggestive). It’s a lot of fun, a mashup between Mad Magazine and Harvey Kurtzman’s adult themes!

Our latest adult email went out just last week: you can see it here. And we appended a major list of adult Rare Books to our Rare Book email that went out this last Tuesday, January 21. You can see the adult books here, and you can see the entire email here.

EVERETT RAYMOND KINSTLER
Closeout Price! The Artist's Journey through Popular Culture 1942-62. Our Highest Recommendation. By Jim Vadeboncoeur, Jr. and Everett Raymond Kinstler. Kinstler's work hangs in museums, boardrooms, banks, private collections, The White House, and in the homes of his clients and friends. Before portraiture became his life's work, he spent the 1940s and 1950s honing his craft in comic books: Hawkman for DC's The Flash, Black Hood and Black Terror for Standard. And dozens upon dozens of covers, inside cover contents pages, and stories for those delightfully lurid Avon titles like Eerie, Cowpuncher, Dalton Brothers, Jesse James, Strange Worlds, etc. And illustrating for pulp magazines like The Shadow, Doc Savage and Detective Tales! News & Notes

Jules Feiffer 1929-2025

Sadly, we have to report that cartoonist Jules Feiffer passed away this week at the age of 94. Besides being famous as a cartoonist. Feiffer worked with Will Eisner on many of the best-ever Spirit sections in the late 1940s, and he wrote the iconic Comic Book Heroes, which was the introduction for many, myself included, to the Golden Age of Comics…still a brilliant book that was even abridged into a Playboy Magazine article in 1964-65.

Diamond Bankruptcy Update

Diamond continues to ship product. They may be losing some exclusive distribution deals, but so far publishers are willing to still work with them along with other distribution channels. I’ve spoken with Steve Geppi. We’ve been friends since we both got into new comics distribution at the same time, in 1982. I wished him well and he was optimistic that Diamond can weather this and emerge as a healthy company without negatively affecting any publishers or retailers. We all want to see that.

Shadow Scrapbook

We’re down to four copies of this vintage book—we were lucky enough to get a nice batch of them a few months ago.

Colossal Conan

We are assured our reorder on these is still due to ship soon; they are taking quite some time to ship out their Zoop orders first. So we are still taking backorders for the Barry Windsor-Smith cover, John Buscema cover, and Jim Lee cover.

Edgar Rice Burroughs Tarzan

We’ve found that nearly everyone likes to buy these in the discounted sets of four volumes. We are selling almost no copies of the individual volumes, so we’re dropping them. We do still have a handful of copies left of most volumes 1-20, so act now if you want any particular titles. We’ll keep Tarzan of the Apes available. Next up is the Barsoom series; so far we are accepting advance orders for both individual volumes ($36.95 each) and also the discounted set [BARS01P. $110.85, $99]. Expected in March/April.

Pirates of Venus is taking a bit more time, we now anticipate copies in March [PIRVH. $375]. Since we discounted the 3-volume set of The Moon Maid, sales jumped. When we have just a few copies left, the price will go back to full retail. Save $50 for now [MOONMH. $350, $300].

Upcoming Events

We hadn’t planned to exhibit at the Pasadena Internationall Antiquarian Book Fair this year, opting instead to just do the San Francisco Rare Books, taking place a week earlier Feb 1-2. Sadly, the Pasadena show has now been cancelled; FEMA took over the convention center to deal with the fire situation in Los Angeles. There will be a virtual show sponsored by the ABAA over the same time, Feb 6-8 and we will have 70+ of our best books listed. Information here at the ABAA or from Anne@budplantandhutchisonbooks.com.

See our events page for more. The N. California Mangani ERB show has just been announced for May in Roseville.
