ARTHUR RACKHAM MASTERPIECES OF ART
Bargain Priced. Recommended. By Joseph Simas. Victorian born illustrator and artist Arthur Rackham influenced much of the book and commercial illustration art of the first half of the 20th Century. The impish detail of his hundreds of drawings brought humor, pathos and romance to fairy stories and classic tales, from the Brothers Grimm and Peter Pan to his exquisite work on Alice in Wonderland. His water-color work and the graceful power of his ink and line work influenced the Golden Age illustrators of the 1920s, through to the pulps of Weird Tales, and the comic book artists of today, including Michael Kaluta, Charles Vess and others. 21-page illustrated career overview by Simas. STRANGE Volume 1
Collects #1-5, 1957-58. By Alex A. Blum and Iger Shop. From tiny company Ajax, here's an early post-code mystery and supernatural title. They offer very good covers and the artwork and stories are very much in the pre-code style. The Iger shop used the same artists that were doing Fiction House titles like Ghost, Jumbo, Wings and Sheena. There are even creepy and horror elements to the story, but without the overt blood and guts prevalent before the comics code. "Banshee Belle," " The Black Cloud," "The Phantom Archers," "Portrait of Greed," "Prisoner of the Shadows," "Strange Spirits," etc. PS Artbooks, 2025....More.

Originally published by small but above average quality Ace Comics, who also did The Beyond, Web of Mystery, Super-Mystery, and Four Favorites from the early 1940s to 1955. This collection features complete stand alone stories much like the classic Twilight Zone TV series, but of course with a bit more terror, blood and gore since this was before the Comics Code. Excellent artwork by Lou Cameron, who was doing some amazing work here, some of the finest in pre-code comics. Two bondage covers. PS Artbooks, 2025....More.

News & Notes

Frank Frazetta Fine Lines

Turning into a bestseller for us. Our shipment came in two parts and we ran through our first copies. But two more orders are coming, so we’ll have more any day now. [FRAFL. $35]. Arnie Fenner told me specifics on the art new to this edition, and I’ve added his specifics to the full description and at the very bottom of this email.

Sara Frazetta also passed along that the 2026 calendar will be all girls. Watch for more details soon.

Meanwhile, the collectible deluxe 2025 Frazetta Calendar is a whopping 75% off! [FRBU25. $40, $10].

Deadbone Erotica

Our reorder arrived but again with damages; we got almost all the backorders filled. Our source packs like, well, badly. Our re-order is on backorder, so arrival date is unknown. We’d put the damaged copies on sale but they are taking them back -- probably sending them to other accounts! [VBCOMDH. $39.99].

Cruel Kingdom, Cruel Universe, Epitaphs from the Abyss

These new EC titles are selling poorly for us. I wanted to make them available, but we’re not even selling enough to cover our expenses. So we will not be stocking future titles in the "new" EC line. We will not be stocking Cruel Kingdom at all.

Tom Spurgeon Award – Ohio State

I’ve been given an award by the Billy Ireland Museum, the annual Tom Spurgeon award. If I can swing it, I’ll put in an appearance at their days-long show in October—it's just that it's almost on top of OAF and two other shows we are doing near the same time. But I am honored to be getting the award, for service to fandom, and I’ll put a link here as soon as something more is up on their website. Here’s the 2024 award winner.

The unpublished art is on pages 1, 39 (one of the Vampis), 40 (two of the roughs), 45 (the Gollum rough), 60 (the two roughs), 70, 71 (all 3 printed in color for the first time), 73, 74, 76, and 77. 18 pieces, I think; some of the Book Club illustrations haven't been included in any other FF book, either, and it includes more Canaveral art in one place, including Caz's complete Frazetta Burroughs portfolio from 1968, which first collected the work for TWO Canaveral Press hardcovers that were never published, Pellucidar and At the Earth’s Core!

LOST MARVELS Volume 1 Tower of Shadows Hurt
Almost Gone! Collects the NEW material from #1-9, 1969-71. Our Highest Recommendation. By Stan Lee, Roy Thomas, Gerry Conway, Len Wein et al. In 1969, with its revolutionary superhero line well established, Marvel took a chance on the kind of supernatural, EC-style anthology series that had been banned since the formation of the Comics Code in the 1950s. Tower of Shadows began featuring entirely new stories with a staggering array of artists: Neal Adams, Jim Steranko, Barry Windsor-Smith, John Buscema, Berni Wrightson, Wally Wood, John Romita, Johnny Craig, Tom Sutton & others. Atmospheric gems of twisted suspense and sardonic horror. Fantagraphics, 2025. Out of print. Condition: Bumped corners....More.

ATLAS ARTIST EDITION Volume 2 Al Williamson Hurt
Complete Stories, 1955-60. Our Highest Recommendation. Edited by Dr. Michael J. Vassallo. Becoming a professional comics artist in 1948 at the age of 17, by 21 Al Williamson was so well-regarded he was recruited by EC Comics — the absolute peak of the field in the 1950s, and a team rarely challenged since. After the Comics Code forced EC to reduce their business, Williamson found himself at the door of Atlas Comics, the largest employer of freelancers in the field. Across 1955-57 and 1959-60, Williamson would draw 99 stories for Atlas (both solo and with help by "Fleagle Gang" studio cohorts Angelo Torres and Roy Krenkel, plus Gray Morrow and Ralph Mayo) in mostly western and fantasy genres, with a smattering of war, romance and "jungle girl adventure." Five months later, on February 8, 1959, the color Sunday strips arrived featuring a totally independent story line from the dailies. The strip narrates, with a realistic approach, the adventures of Major Sky Masters during the early days of space exploration in the late 1950s, just as a new front opened in the Cold War between the U.S. and U.S.S.R.: a frenzied space race. DORIS DANGER Giant Monsters Amok
By Chris Wisnia & Ricky Sprague, with Dick Ayers, Art Adams, Bill Stout et al. Written and drawn as dead-on homages to the styles of Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and Dick Ayers, these 20 stories recount Doris Danger's encounters with the classic Marvel-style pre-hero monsters, now renamed "Ner-Nee-Nah," "Spwum," "Ho-Chee-Cha," "X, Son of XI," etc. But this is parody on a meta-level, as "editor" Rob Oder takes you behind the scenes and reveals the secrets behind these comics — the chaos, the "faster-faster/cheaper-cheaper" mentality, the never-ending deadlines, the despicable treatment of writers and artists, the contempt for fans, the blithe disregard for quality — all presented with an unctuous, sunny veneer of jocular "sophistication" to readers. TALES OF HORROR Volume 1
Collects #1-5, 1952-53. Recommended. Art by Myron Fass, Pete Morisi, A.C. Hollingsworth et al. Toby Press was a small but respectable comics publisher which also used the imprint Minoan; they put out one issue of Tales of Terror, then got hit by a cease-and-desist order from E.C., who had used that title for their annuals (don't worry, that particular issue will be coming later on). Toby dropped that and started over with Tales of Horror, which ran for 13 issues. Toby may be the only comics publisher to swipe the urbane and cynical stories of John Collier, rather than relying on Poe, Lovecraft, and the like. But there's still lots of pre-code horror here, monsters, giant bugs, demons, all the fun themes. PS Artbooks, 2024....More.

WEB OF MYSTERY Volume 2
Collects #6-10, 1951. Highly Recommended. Master artist Lou Cameron, who at his best compares with Frank Frazetta, is here in every single issue. It's also a tribute to these issues that several of the stories have been reprinted in numerous collections of the best stories from the fifties. Other contributors include Louis Zansky (several stories), Rocke Mastroserio (several stories, inking Lou Cameron), Jim McLaughlin (another fine but under-rated artist, on several stories), Bill Molno (two stories), Chic Stone (yes, two stories by Marvel's inker for Jack Kirby and others) and Ken Rice.   PS Artbooks, 2024....More.

FIGHT AGAINST CRIME #20 Facsimile Edition
Reprint from 1954. Recommended. Online there are no credits for these stories, but they are actually very competently drawn in a familiar style “ the first sure looks like early Joe Maneely to me! Famous, grisly decapitation (with headlights, no less) cover, even outdoing EC's lone decapitation cover that Gaines tried to defend in Congress trials. Plus inside: hanging, ax murder, blood and violence. A merely Fine copy (6.0) in 2023 sold for $14,000! This pre-code crime classic being released mere months before the Comics Code would come into play is a prime example of what the Code aimed to censor! And for good reason, in this case! HAYAO MIYAZAKI SHUNA'S JOURNEY
One of NY Times "Best Children's Books" of 2022. Our Highest Recommendation. From legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki comes Shuna's Journey, a beautifully told graphic novel that he created in 1983, just before producing his first film at Studio Gibli. A prince goes on a quest for a golden grain that would save his land and finds danger, adventure, and companions in a world of myth. Never before published in English! GEORGE SAND True Genius, True Woman
Recommended. By Séverine Vidal. Art by Kim Consigny. A scrupulously researched and tenderly revealing biography of one of the great pioneering figures of 19th-century French literature.
