MANGA A New History of Japanese Comics The immensely popular art form of manga, or Japanese comics, has made its mark across global pop culture, influencing film, visual art, video games, and more. This book is the first to tell the history of comics in Japan as a single, continuous story, focusing on manga as multipanel cartoons that show stories rather than narrate them. Eike Exner traces these cartoons’ gradual evolution from the 1890s until today, culminating in manga’s explosion in global popularity in the 2000s and the current shift from print periodicals to digital media and smartphone apps. NOSE ART OF THE 5TH AIR FORCE Pinups and More 1942-1947 By David Vincent. This massive volume includes more than 1,150 vintage images of WWII aircraft nose art. The artwork appears on American planes in the Pacific theater, specifically from the US 5th Air Force. Readers will see all kinds of aircraft, from bombers to fighters and cargo planes, often with their pilots and crews. The artists range from amateurs to professionals, and the subjects include both the famous female "pin-ups" and many steamy nudes, to militaristic or animal designs. Primarily in b&w but with lengthy captions detailing the history of the artwork's origins, plane history and crews. Sometimes these are the sole images ever found. Many of the fliers and planes, of course, didn't make it through the war. Schiffer, 2025....More. Item Code: NOSAH Hard Cover, 9x12, 432pg, Partial Color |

THE MOON PRINCE Recommended. By Kevin Fraser Mutch. Mistreated for being mixed-race and forced into hard labor at a workhouse in West Hoboken, New Jersey, young Max and Molly are ordinary orphans — or so they think. Rattled by this realization, he sends them off on a journey that will uncover the secret behind their mystic lineage and give them purpose and power far from home — on the Moon! THE WOMAN WITH FIFTY FACES Maria Lani & The Greatest Art Heist That Never Was By Jonathan Lackman. Art by Zachary J. Pinson. On April 7, 1928, Maria Lani blew into Paris claiming to be a famous German actress and proceeded to seduce the cultural elite with her undeniable charisma and strangely enticing enigmatic aura. She persuaded fifty artists — Pierre Bonnard, Marc Chagall, André Derain, Henri Matisse, Georges-Henri Rouault, Fernand Léger and Suzanne Valadon among them — to immortalize her in paintings and sculptures, which would appear as an important plot device in a forthcoming film. Unveiled as an exhibition in New York, the art works traveled to Chicago, London, Berlin, Rotterdam, and Paris. But, in 1931, as legend eventually had it, she and her husband Max Abramowicz vanished without a trace, and so did the art. The film was never made. The Woman With Fifty Faces is about uncovering as much of the truth about Maria Lani as possible. Fantagraphics, 2025....More. Item Code: WOMFFH Hard Cover, 8x13, 232pg, b&w |

DC FINEST JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA The Return Collects Justice League of America #241-261, Annual #3, Infinity, Inc. #19, 1985-87. Art by Todd McFarlane, McDonnell, Tuska and Wray. Encompassing Gerry Conway’s epic run on Justice League of America through the 1980s, this 582-page volume weaves a story of the Justice League facing off against some of their greatest foes, including Amazo and the Brotherhood of Evil! In the 1980s, the JLA did one of its most radical lineup revamps ever by making members of Zatanna, Vixen, Elongated Man, Vibe, Syptsy and Steel. And Adam Strange has a bit part here, along with the first DC Silver Age hero, the Martian Manhunter. And they were centered in Detroit no less! Along with artists Luke McDonnell, George Tuska and Bill Wray, writer Conway created different stories, conflicts and new experiences for these heroes previously overshadowed by their more mainstream counterparts. It was a new era for the Justice League. DC Comics, 2025....More. Item Code: DCFJLR Soft Cover, 7x10, 584pg, Full Color |
This is a nice companion to the previous JLA release, The Bridge Between Earths. Also I strongly recommended the two DC Finest Justice Society collections with great 1940s stories. The entire DC Finest series is catching on, I think they are very good values (all are over 500 pages!) and well-chosen, fun material. |

By Eisner Award-winning Darwyn Cooke with coloring by Dave Stewart. Welcome to the DC Universe in 1950s America — a land of promise and paranoia, of glittering cities and segregated slums, of dizzying scientific progress and simmering Cold War conflict. A land without the Justice League. Or so it seems. The masked mystery men who fought for freedom in the Second World War have been outlawed. The soldiers and spies who conducted top-secret missions into the unknown now work in the shadows. And those icons who do still fight on — Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman — operate under hidden agendas and dueling ideologies. DC Comics, 2025....More. |
This arrived this week but most of our copies had a bumped corner. More are on the way, and you can reserve a copy. Here’s an excellent review of Lost Marvels 1 and 2 I just found online: ‘Strange Bedfellows’ — Marvel and Fantagraphics Team Up for New Archival Line By Rob Salkowwitz for Publishers Weekly.com |
![]() |
The first title to hit the shelves is Tower of Shadows, collecting most of the stories from a short-lived horror/fantasy anthology published in the early 1970s, featuring some of the best artists of that era. The series came out as the Comic Code loosened restrictions on certain horror and supernatural content that had been in effect since the days of EC Comics in the 1950s, and shortly after Marvel had obtained newsstand distribution that allowed it to dramatically expand its lineup. The stories followed predictable genre formulas and were often used as tryouts for young writers like Gerry Conway and Len Wein, who went on to better things, but the artwork was truly the star. The first issue features one of the final Marvel stories by Jim Steranko, and is one of his most polished and formally innovative works. Other stories were drawn by a virtual who’s who of top American comic artists of the era including Neal Adams, John Buscema, Gene Colan, Barry Windsor-Smith, and Bernie Wrightson, plus old EC stalwarts like Johnny Craig, Marrie Severin, and Wally Wood. The art is reproduced from files provided by Marvel, using original color schemes. The deep blacks preserve the quality of the linework and the color pops nicely on the non-gloss white paper. Fantagraphics’ production is definitely the best of the licensed archival Marvel work currently in the market, without the problems that occur when trying to simulate the cheap and distressed look of the comic pages too closely, or else recoloring and "remastering" the work in ways that destroy the original atmosphere. It’s a fine line, but Fantagraphics, which has specialized in this kind of work for over 40 years, knows how to navigate it. Dean said a collection of early work by Howard Chaykin is next. Prior to, or contemporary with, Chaykin’s breakthrough on Marvel’s adaptation of Star Wars, he did a handful of stories featuring his trademark swashbuckling adventurers like Dominic Fortune and Monarch Moonstalker, as well as work on lesser-known Marvel characters like Phantom Eagle and Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD. Fantagraphics recently announced the preview of this book slated for Free Comic Book Day has been canceled due to uncertainty around FCBD sponsor Diamond Distribution, which has entered bankruptcy. The full edition is still being published as scheduled. Subsequent Lost Marvels volumes will include material like the 1980s run of Savage Tales, stories from Marvel science fiction titles like Unknown Worlds of Science Fiction, and action/war material like Doug Murray and Michael Golden’s The ’Nam. Dean hopes to collect Chamber of Darkness, the companion title to Tower of Shadows, featuring a similar mix of horror and fantasy. Groth also says that Fantagraphics is working with Marvel on a deluxe two-volume set featuring all the Marvel work of artist Barry Windsor-Smith (exclusive of his run on Conan the Barbarian), comprising nearly 900 pages over several decades. Fantagraphics published Windsor-Smith’s monumental graphic novel Monsters in 2021, which began as a story for Marvel. |
I’m more than half way through this and I’m really enjoying it. The author has nicely captured Robert E. Howard’s style. King Conan made a promise to a fellow prisoner when he was a youth in a slave quarry, and now it’s time to fulfill that promise—to save the man’s family, now slaves themselves. But three very different people, two sorcerors and one thoroughly nasty warrior, are all eager to see Conan die by their hand…they’re working together with their own powers as well as dark magic to stop him in his quest, far from his kingdom and only accompanied by a band of roving musicians, once warriors themselves who gave up the life to become storytellers…. Check it out. |

Animalia and Fantasia - Pre-pub savings |
|
Because our print catalog will be in your hands most likely after publication of this, we’ve listed it at full post-publication price there. But for now, we will still honor the pre-pub price on both editions, which will save you $30 and $50. If you read my full description of this, you’ll understand why I’m very pleased to see this rare 1895 portfolio finally available. The catalog cover—I mentioned above it should be uploadable next week—is actually from a plate from my own copy of this. Act now if you’d like to reserve a copy and save quite a bit. I think you’ll be pleased. -Bud |
