LOST MARVELS Volume 2 Dominic Fortune, Monark Starstalker, Phantom Eagle When Howard Chaykin broke into comics in the 1970s, there was nothing quite like him. His original characters Dominic Fortune and Monark Starstalker took classic pulp heroes and ran them through a postmodern blender. This new volume contains retro-science-fiction bounty hunter Monark Starstalker’s debut appearance and all Chaykin’s color-comic-book Dominic Fortune stories, including the character’s unexpurgated Max series, published a generation later. Completing the package is the collision between pulp heroism and the devastating, bloody realities of World War I in Chaykin’s 111-page collaboration with The Boys writer Garth Ennis on War Is Hell: The First Flight of the Phantom Eagle. The collection is introduced by author and comics scholar Brannon Costello. This second title in Fantagraphics’ Lost Marvels series collects some of the most exciting, sought-after work by Howard Chaykin from 1975 to 2008. Fantagraphics, 2025....More. NAMOR THE SUB-MARINER Omnibus Volume 1 Collects Fantastic Four #4, 6, 9, 14, 27, 33, his stories from Tales to Astonish #70-101, Sub-Mariner #1 (1968) & much more, 1962-68. Our Highest Recommendation. By Stan Lee et al. Art by Jack Kirby, John Buscema, Gene Colan et al. Nearly all of these stories were created when Marvel was still restricted to just ten titles or so a month, under a distribution agreement that ran from 1958 to 1968. This actually resulted in the best-ever Marvel Comics material — Stan could still write or at least oversee every single title, and cross-overs were frequent. Amazing, iconic stories were even more frequent, such as Subby's first appearances in Fantastic Four, and in The Avengers #3 and 4, in Strange Tales battling The Human Torch, in Daredevil #7...you get the idea. - Bud Marvel, 2025. ...More. Personal Note - Vacation Time! |
|
Anne and I have been in Connecticut for a week, visiting with friends (one of whom is a comic book buddy, who was reading Golden Age in the Golden Age…he’s 90 and still doing very well). But I will admit, we were going to drive over to Terrificon in Massachusetts and we mutually cancelled out. I’d just done very long day visiting Ted Van Liew of Superworld Comics the day before. Three hours of driving, six more spent in his basement looking at comics—and, well, a fair amount of time swapping stories. We’ve both been in this for a long time. I came home with a busted budget and a small stack of goodies, so further temptation at Terrificon seemed over the top. Anne and I also went by a children’s & illustrated book dealer here, E.M. Maurice. We’d met years ago at the Boston shadow book fair, when we used to fly back to exhibit at the ABAA show there. We hadn’t realized before that he was so close to our friend’s house in Suffield. We had a fine visit and I found some quite special books, several of which were entirely new to me. A Rip Van Winkle illustrated by Charles Robinson I’d never seen before. A lovely 1860s book with hand-colored plates illustrated by Henry Noel Humphreys, whose chromolithography books are my favorites from this time. Even found a nice E.J. Detmold Book of Baby Beasts in a handsome binding new to me. ~Bud |
