The Making of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey A comprehensive visual record of a cinematic masterpiece! By Piers Bizony. Get closer than ever to the movie that changed the movies. This behind-the-scenes record of the making of 2001: A Space Odyssey sheds light on the lead actors, senior production designers, special-effects experts and the legendary masterminds behind it—Stanley Kubrick and SF legend Arthur C. Clarke—who together revolutionized science fiction and the art of cinema. Taschen, 2026. Item Code: MAKSKHHardcover, 6X9, 512 pg, Partial Color |

1968 was a landmark year for Science Fiction cinema. It was the year that brought us two of the genre's most enduring and compelling films of the 20th century: Planet of the Apes and 2001: A Space Odyssey. I was a mere six-years-old when I saw 2001, and while I didn't grasp the enormous complexity of its cosmically challenging plot at the time, I found enough in its futuristic imagery and later cat-and-mouse game with the malfunctioning HAL-9000, to hold my attention 'til the end. 2001's design and effects were state of the art in the late '60s, and it was this film that built the foundation for other films to come, especially the original Star Wars. This is a fantastic look into the art and innovations that Stanley Kubrick and his team perfected to make the possibility of interplanetary travel and exploration seem all too real. And that other movie from 1968? Planet of the Apes? Well, I saw that later in the same year... and loved it. But that's a story for another day. ~Marty |

Batman By Neal Adams Absolute Edition Volume 1 Highly Recommended. By Dennis O’Neil, Frank Robbins, & Bob Haney; Art by Neal Adams. One of the milestones of Batman's long history is the arrival of Neal Adams who, along with writers Dennis O’Neil, Frank Robbins, and Bob Haney, reimagined the character to a lean, haunted figure of noir intensity — an evolution that would define every modern version of the character to come. Now experience the complete works of Neal Adams on Batman (from 1968 to 1970) in the first of two beautiful, oversized Absolute format editions! DC Comics, 2026. Item Code: BATNA01HHardcover, 8X13, 408 pg, Full Color |

When I was a kid, I watched the Batman TV show on ABC infrequently. I much preferred the sci-fi shows of the era like Outer Limits or Irwin Allen's Lost in Space and Land of the Giants, among others. Batman was just too silly for me, and I was a SF/Horror kid, anyway, so there was little appeal at the time. But as I grew into an older comic book reader/collector, and my circle of friends who were also in the hobby began to make their recommendations, they all tended to point me in the direction of Batman. But this wasn't the goofy Caped Crusader from TV, or the crimefighter who fought more aliens and colorful foes in the comics than actual criminals. This modern Batman was grim... gritty... a skilled fighter with the mind of a great detective. And amongst the artists bringing his monthly adventures to life was one particular guy whose work I had seen elsewhere: Neal Adams. This was THE Batman artist. Whether he was drawing the Dark Knight or his alter ego Bruce Wayne, Adams' art brought a realism and gravitas that the previous incarnation of the Batman never had. Neal gave us nearly 70 issues of Batman over the years, each one a gem of storytelling and illustration. These Absolute Editions (this being the first of two) should be in every Batman fan's collection. And honestly, if you're not a Neal Adams fan, then your Batman fan cred is in serious question! ~Marty |

The EC Archives: The Complete Piracy Collects Piracy #1-7. By Carl Wessler, Wally Wood, Al Williamson and others. Dark Horse continues to reissue their EC Archive editions in new softcover editions, this time collecting the entire seven-issue run of EC's "New Direction" title, Piracy! Like their previous volume, Valor, this volume collects another short run New Direction series, this time featuring unforgettable tales of pirates and the high seas. And with art by Wally Wood, Al Williamson, Angelo Torres, Marie Severin, Jack Davis, Bernie Krigstein, George Evans, Graham Ingels, and Reed Crandall, it doesn't get much better. Marvel Comics were the kings of licensed comics in the late '70s and '80s, adapting everything from toy lines (Shogun Warriors, Micronauts, ROM), cartoons (Heathcliff, Garfield, Muppet Babies) and movies like Dragonslayer, Blade Runner and many more. Their adaptations of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones films were particular favorites, especially since Marvel didn't just pawn these adaptations off on second stringers. They put their "top men" on the job! When Marvel got the license for Indy's ongoing comic book adventures, they tapped superstar John Byrne to launch the series with his own original adventure. And it was a big hit. And while he was only on the series for two issues, the series went on to feature many different writers and artists over it's run, taking the character and his supporting cast around the world in search of ancient artifacts and Nazis to punch. Now, for the first time, Marvel presents these two volumes reprinting the entire series along with the three Marvel movie adaptations. They all come dressed up in leatherette covers designed to look like Indy's own journals. If you're an Indiana Jones fan, then these volumes are definitely must-haves for your library! ~Marty |
