Kaluta Signed, R. Crumb's Kafka, Wally Wood's Shattuck, Barnaby 3, Dick Tracy 20, Archie Archives Softcovers, Frank Miller's New Artist's Edition, PS Artbooks Sale Part 3!

Michael Kaluta Sketchbook Series, like Mark Schultz: Portfolio, puts together all five sketchbooks in one expanded format hardcover. We've been friends since the seventies, when he was one of the new young turks at DC and still doing fanzine work, and part of The Studio. We still had an illustrated bookplate he created for his long sold-out adaption of Metropolis, so he generously signed more of these which we added to this fine book.

MICHAEL KALUTA SKETCHBOOK SERIES Signed -- With exclusive signed bookplate. Highly Recommended. By Michael Kaluta. This collection presents all five Kaluta sketchbooks in a handsome oversized hardcover. All selected by the artist from his personal archives--a cornucopia of delightful delineations and lovely line drawings. We still had unsigned, illustrated bookplates he created for us for Metropolis in 1995, which he has now signed to go with this.....More.

His Mythic Coloring Book with Charles Vess remains available [MYTCB. $16.95]. At 128 pages, it is perhaps the best bargain so far in the popular new coloring books, at least in our area of interest.

R CRUMB'S KAFKA -- New Printing Highly Recommended. By Robert Crumb and David Zane Mairowitz.. David Zane Mairowitz's brilliant text and comics storytelling of Robert Crumb (himself no stranger to self-loathing and alienation), penetrate the essence of Kafka and provide insight beyond the cliche "Kafkaesque," peering through Kafka's glass wall like no other book before it.  Alienated from his roots, his family, his surroundings, Kafka created a unique literary language in which to hide away, transforming himself into a cockroach, an ape, a dog, a mole or a circus artiste who starves himself to death in front of admiring crowds!....More.

WALLACE WOOD PRESENTS SHATTUCK --Original art edition. Recommended. By Wallace Wood. Co-written by Nicola Cuti. In 1972, Wallace Wood created Shattuck, a rarely seen Western comic strip, assisted by soon-to-be great cartoonists Dave Cockrum (X-Men) and Howard Chaykin (Star Wars, Punisher). Full of gun-toting femmes fatale, often unclothed, fast-drawing lawmen, and snarling outlaws, this spurs 'n' saddles romp will remind you of Cannon, Wood's no-holds-barred sex and violence romp of a few years later. The long-lost comic strip masterpiece by legendary children’s book author Crockett Johnson (Harold and the Purple Crayon), collected in full and designed by graphic novelist and Barnaby superfan Daniel Clowes (Ghost World). This collects the postwar years of 1946-1947, continuing five-year-old Barnaby Baxter and his Fairy Godfather J.J. PS Artbooks on Sale

This is the 3rd and final part of our new PS Artbooks sale. See the last two week's email for the other new, on sale, slipcased editions at $21.99. Or search our website with "pssale." Softcover collections for the Harvey Horrors titles Black Cat, Chamber of Chills and Phantom Lady are included below. PS didn't do softcovers of these other titles.

HARVEY HORRORS BLACK CAT MYSTERY Volume 1 Slipcased -- Closeout Price! Collects #30-35, 1951-52. Highly Recommended. Foreword by Christopher Fowler. On the art side, you have A-1 talent like Bob Powell, Howard Nostrand (who was directed to imitate the EC styles of Jack Davis and Wally Wood!), Warren Kremer, the great Rudy Palais and Lee Elias, who did most of the gruesome covers and many stories. While this begins with #30, this is actually the first six issues of the title. It was previously Black Cat, devoted to the motorcycle-riding heroine who appears here only on the cover of the first issue....More.

HARVEY HORRORS BLACK CAT MYSTERY Volume 2 Slipcased -- Closeout Price! Collects #36-41, 1952. Limited, 300! Recommended. By Bob Powell, Rudy Palais, Manny Stallman, Warren Kremer et al. Foreword by Johnny Mains. For some reason, this particular Harvey title seems to boast more over-the-top entries in Overstreet than any other Harvey horror title. What was once a relatively innocent title starring a cute actress-turned-crime fighter, Black Cat, became one of the most notorious titles of the 1950s. Two of the issues here are noted in Wertham's Seduction of the Innocent for their brutality and headlights....More.

HARVEY HORRORS BLACK CAT MYSTERY Volume 1 Softcover -- Closeout Price! Collects #30-34 (the first five issues), 1951-52. Recommended. By Bob Powell, Howard Nostrand, Rudy Palais, Warren Kremer et al. Harvey Comics is best known for kid-friendly hits like Richie Rich and Little Dot. But like Atlas (Marvel) and EC, Harvey were perfectly happy to pull out all the stops on horror. Before the Comics Code, they produced many of the meatiest and wildest stories of gore and terror, ghosts and sudden death, strange creatures and madmen and madwomen. Comics fans consider their short but sweet run of horror next in line after EC, and equal to or better than the somewhat pedestrian fare from Atlas.

By Bob Powell, Rudy Palais, Al Avison, Howard Nostrand, Lee Elias, Manny Stallman et al. Special feature is a six-page profile of Bob Powell, who in my mind is clearly the finest artist in Harvey's stable during this horror period. And Powell was perfect for horror, as shown here in reproductions of eight pages of original artwork.
