DOPE MENACE The Sensational World of Drug Paperbacks 1900-1975
Back in stock. Highly Recommended. By Stephen J. Gertz. While we now enjoy this exploitative genre for its campy kitsch, gloriously bad writing, and outlandish misinformation, drug paperback books were once a transgressive medium with a perversely seductive quality. Dope Menace collects together hundreds of fabulously lurid and collectible covers in color, from xenophobic turn-of-the century tomes about the opium trade to the beatnik glories of reefer smoking and William S. Burroughs’ Junkie to the spaced-out psychedelic ’60s. Occasional nudity. Feral House, 2008. Mature Readers...More.

Lovecraft & M. R. James

GHOST STORIES OF AN ANTIQUARY Volume 1
Introduction by horror master Ramsey Campbell. Highly Recommended. By M.R. James. Adapted by Leah Moore and John Reppion. Curl up by the fire and enter the sinister, supernatural world of Montague Rhodes James (1862–1936), acknowledged master of the English ghost story. Admired by Lovecraft himself, James' skill is to begin with a firm base in reality, and slowly build into a creepy, shocking ending as all the details come together. These often begin like a detective story, but the conclusion may just result in death for the investigators. Four wonderfully adapted tales by for different artists, superbly using much of James' original text and dialogue, all based in England in the early 19th century. SelfMadeHero, 2016. ...More.

CTHULHU POSTER By Richard Luong
Highly Recommended. A very large, creepy, magnificent painting of a huge Cthulhu, towering hundreds of feet above a lost sailing ship, sails shredded, about to be crushed and sunk into oblivion. It's a dark, stormy scene in the midst of a swirling, crashing ocean--Lovecraft superbly brought to life for your wall. We very much like Luong's excellent Art of Richard Luong, so when he told us he'd privately printed up this cool print, we had to offer it. 2016. ...More.

MLJ COMPANION
The Complete History of the Archie Comics Super-Heroes. Highly Recommended. By Rick Offenberger, Paul Castiglia and Jon B. Cooke. The Golden Age begins with The Shield, (the first patriotic super-hero, who pre-dated Captain America), The Black Hood, Hangman, The Web and Steel Sterling. A complete early 1940s story is here for each of these. The Silver Age spotlights the “Mighty Crusaders,” reviving the 1940s heroes, plus newbies The Fly (created by Simon & Kirby) and The Jaguar). I've really looked forward to this. I've collected the Golden Age MLJ heroes for many years now, kind of a poor man's Timely, with a fun variety of heroes and fine work by Bob Fuji, Charles Biro, Jack Cole, Irv Novick, Bob Montana and others. I’m already halfway through it and itching to get back to reading it.

POPEYE CLASSICS Volume 8
Popeye Comics #35-39, 1956-57. By Bud Sagendorf. Cartoon Research notes, "It's rare that the comic book version of a popular comic strip is as good or better than the original. This is one of those rare exceptions. Sagendorf is immersed in Segar's world. His storytelling abilities are superb and his cartooning is a joy to behold. Sagendorf owned this universe as much as Segar--other artists have been able substitutes, but Sagendorf knew these eccentric personalities inside and out!" Plus a 9-page scrapbook of Sagendorf photos, and fun back-up strips about a crazed inventor, "O.G, Wotasnozzle." IDW, 2016. ...More.

Pin-Up Calendars

PIN-UP HISTORY 2017 Calendar
Recommended. Once you get past the oft-seen Elvgren on the cover, this actually offers a fun journey through other masterful artists, with many images new to us. There's two full nudes, two artist sketchbook pages, a tanned Hawaiian gal, and more stylish cheesecake from the heyday of the pin-up calendar, circa the 1950s, by a wide variety of pin-up artists contemporary with Elvgren and Vargas, but mostly forgotten today, such as Sundblom, Thompson, Elliott, Metcalf, and perhaps Earl Moran. Tushita, 2016. ...More.

Item Code: PI17
12x12, 24pg, Full Color
$14.95

PULP ATTACK 2017 Calendar
Recommended. Well, the publishers went out and found some (mostly) never before collected images, from vintage paperbacks, magazine covers, and films. There's also at least two unusual--and fun--images from even scarcer British sources. Great titles, like She Tried to be Good, Nautipuss, Fast Loose and Lovely, Sin City, Live Fast/Die Young, and even High on Grass! It's all about the sexy ladies here, strutting their stuff and enticing men into their clutches. What's not to like? Image Connection, 2016. ...More.

Item Code: PULP17
12x12, 24pg, Full Color
$14.95

The Artist's Sketch Pad 2017 Calendar
Recommended. A popular sub-genre of pin-up calendars was this "artist's sketchpad" style. A central girl in full color is surrounded by several more preliminary images, usually in pencil or ink, showing different poses and moods of the same lady. So you get a lot more of each lady, but with one light, fun, classic cheesecake. Elliot's work here is from 1949-1951 best-selling calendars. His girls were gorgeous, glamorous, glowing with good health, impossibly long-limbed creatures, occasionally involved in comic situations. Catch, 2016. ...More.

Item Code: ASP17
12x12, 24pg, Full Color
$14.95

See all our 2017 calendars on our website.

Mature Readers

Three new calendars this week, two contemporary and one retro. The retro is our favorite, Pin-Ups 2017 (Catch) is actual ladies from the 1950s and early 60s, exactly the same body types as you find in the painted pin-ups by Elvgren and Vargas—but here they’re real ladies, sexy, high-spirited and fun. Not a hint of sleaze in sight.

The two other calendars are both top-drawer contemporary photography: Naked 2017 and Derrieres 2017. Both feature classy, sophisticated black and white photography of, well, bottoms of naked ladies, and the naked ladies themselves.

News and Notes

3 Devils by Bo Hampton
I just finished 3 Devils and I have to say I liked it quite a bit. I was a little disappointed to find out it’s not complete, collecting just the first four issues of the series. So I look forward to more. But it’s quite an adventure by itself. A very young gypsy girl’s family is murdered by a vampire—in the old west. She’s befriended by a kind of zombie/undead character, who she brings out the best in, and together they begin training for her ultimate revenge. After several years of serious study (she’s already a master with a knife, from her family’s circus days), she’s ready to tackle “The White Man.” But first they encounter a rather unique young werewolf, who’s quite the nice guy except when the moon’s full--so our gypsy girl, now grown into a young woman, insists on rescuing him also.

I don’t consider myself a BIG fan of the western genre, but I do admit I watched all the classic films growing up. I find the new graphic novels set in the old west to be quite refreshing, kind of a simpler, less complex world than the urban jungle of today’s super heroes.

I found Jodorosky’s Bouncer a real page turner, and really loved the artwork and story of Dead Rider: Crown of Skulls by Kev Ferrara (boy, can he draw like Wrightson). Thomas Yeates' Law of the Desert Born was also a fine work, adapted from Louis L’Amour’s novel.

3 Devils: [3DEV. $19.99, your price $17.99]

Bouncer: [BOUNH. $44.95, your price $39.95]

Dead Rider: [DEADR. $14.99, your price $12.99]

Law of the Desert Born: [LAWDH. $24.95, now on special at $12.50]. Comes with a bookplate signed by Yeates. It’s my very favorite work by him, much in the style of Russ Heath!
