Publisher White Sale

When a publisher reduces the price on their own book, it's called a White Sale. They do this to move out excess inventory, or raise some quick cash. But the result is that we get cool new sale books, that we may or may not have handled before. We also get enough copies to (hopefully) make everyone happy. Closeouts are different because we often have only a couple or a handful of copies, and we are the ones to reduce the price.

Here we've gathered up some of our favorite White Sale items that we think deserve your attention, both new items just in, and some older groups that include some of my favorite books. We also mixed in a handful of closeouts of our own which ARE limited in quantity--but they are ALL NEW, appearing at new prices here for the first time. So as always, best to act now to avoid missing out.

FREE BOOK! We have 17 copies of The Shadow #142 with a bumped corner. One per customer please, just add it to your order of any white sale item. We also have a few Free Comic Book Day comics left, you can include those also.

An eclectic and stylish collection of comics from Rian Hughes, renowned illustrator and graphic designer, Yesterday's Tomorrows features infamous and hard-to-find collaborations with Eisner Award winner Grant Morrison's Dan Dare, a post-modern classic that sets the aging and retired iconic British character Dare against a modern British landscape he no longer understands, and Really and Truly, a high-octane psychedelic road-trip torn from the pages of cult comic 2000AD. Hughes' clean graphic style comes to the fore in duotone for The Science Service, written by John Freeman, while Hughes explores an evocative noir palette replete with dramatic angular lighting for Raymond Chandler's Goldfish, adapted by It's Superman author Tom DeHaven. THE DIVINE COMEDY Inferno Purgatorio Paradiso
Recommended. By Dante Alighieri. Art by Gustave DorĂ©. Dante's masterpiece of literature is well matched by the peerless art of Gustave Doré. Dante and his guides, Virgil and Beatrice, journey through Hell in an allegory of the passage of the soul through the Afterlife. The illustrations were drawn or painted by Doré, then engraved in either steel or wood. They have rarely been out of print since their first publication in the 1860s. His artwork perfectly complements the movement from the darkness and horror of tormented souls in Hell, through to the light—Paradise Regained. Nicely reproduced. DON HECK A Work of Art
Recommended. By John Coates. Foreword by Stan Lee. Afterword by Beau Smith. Meticulously researched here is Don Heck’s 40-year career, including his time at Atlas with Stan's pre-hero stories, DC, Dell, Gold Key, his pre-code horror work in the early 1950s (on titles like Horrific, Danger and Weird Terror), and as "ghost" artist on Lee Falk's The Phantom newspaper strip. From personal recollections from Don's surviving family, long-time friends, and industry legends, to rare interviews with Heck himself (where he discusses his career, artistic technique, triumphs, frustrations, and love of drawing), this book is full of insight into--and first-hand anecdotes from--the early days of Marvel Comics. AMERICAN BEAUTIES The Artwork of Harrison Fisher
Recommended. Harrison Fisher's portraits of healthy, poised, active, and confident women set the standard for American beauty during the early years of the twentieth century. The artist enjoyed enormous popularity from 1905 to 1920, serving as a judge in nationwide beauty contests and maintaining a celebrity status that was unparalleled for an illustrator. This original publication recaptures the images that made Fisher famous, compiling his very best black-and-white and color illustrations for Cosmopolitan, The Saturday Evening Post, and The Ladies Home Journal as well as for books and other publications. THE CALL OF THE WILD
Facsimile of the 1912 edition. Recommended. By Jack London. Art by Paul Bransom. Jack London's novels and rugged individualism embodied American hopes, frustrations, and romantic longings in the turbulent early years of the twentieth century, an era infused with the wonder and excitement of great technological and historic change. The author's restless spirit, taste for excitement, and probing mind led him on a series of hard-edged adventures from the Yukon to the South Seas. Out of these sometimes harrowing experiences — and his fascination with the theories of such thinkers as Darwin, Spencer, and Marx — came the inspiration for adventure novels that made him one of America's most popular writers. THE GOLDEN ASSE
By Lucius Apuleius. Art by Jean De Bosschere. Written in the second century A.D., this picaresque classic is the ancient world's only surviving complete novel. An inquisitive young man is transformed into an ass by a magic potion, and the narrative offers tales of love, intrigue, and witchcraft -- a story-within-a-story technique that inspired many later authors, including Boccaccio, Cervantes, and Rabelais. This lavish hardcover edition--bright red cloth with gold embossed titles--reproduces the John Lane/Bodley Head version, published in London in 1923, complete with the at-the-time racy plates: 16 full-page, eight in color, and numerous black-and-white images by noted illustrator Jean de Bosschère. THE SCARLET LETTER
Originally published in London, 1920. Recommended. By Nathaniel Hawthorne. Art by Hugh Thomson.
