News and Notes |
Comics Fandom is a little poorer this week, with the loss of Bill Schelly. No one did more to chronicle and preserve the early history of comics fanzines and their creators. And Bill's biographies of comics professionals are among the most thorough and enjoyable ever published. Rob Salkowitz in ICv2 wrote a wonderful piece that I could not agree with more. He gave me permission to include it here:
|
Word spread over the weekend that comics historian Bill Schelly died last week at the age of 67. Schelly was part of the original generation of comic fans and fanzine contributors from the 1960s, a period documented in his book Sense of Wonder: My Life in Comics Fandom. He became one of the most serious and diligent scholars of the medium, publishing substantial and well-researched biographies of creators.... |
Schelly's death came as a shock since few knew he was ill. In fact, he'd been struggling with health issues over the summer and got a diagnosis of multiple myeloma (bone marrow cancer) in late August. He succumbed to complications from the treatment, according to his friend, writer John Lustig. "To many, Bill was the greatest historian and biographer that the comic book community has ever had," wrote Lustig. "To those of us who knew him personally, he was also a kind, considerate and witty friend." |
All of us who write about comics and live in a world where comics receive respect as an artform and part of America's cultural tradition owe Schelly and his generation a huge debt. Those early fans built the groundwork, established the rules of the road, and created the institutions – from communities to conventions – that we enjoy today. They did it all under the disapproving glares of their peers who mocked their passion and a culture that considered comics worthless or worse. Schelly felt even stronger pressures as a gay man who did not come to terms with his sexuality until much later in life. |
Bill was a gentle man of great depth and an unsung giant in our business. He will be greatly missed. https://icv2.com/articles/columns/view/44068/r-i-p-bill-schelly-other-comics-news |
My friend Michelle Nolan was very good friends with Bill, living just 90 minutes away from his place in Seattle. They shared a love of comics and a passion for comics history and its creators. Michelle wrote this for a memorial that will be held at OAFCon next month: |
Bill Schelly left us far too soon, for he had established himself as the best author of biographies in the world of comics. He had much more to contribute to his list of distinguished biographies of brilliant creators such as Harvey Kurtzman, John Stanley, Joe Kubert, Otto Binder, James Warren and others. Nobody ever worked harder to be comprehensive and yet always fair to his subjects.
|
I recall being filled with joy a couple of years ago when Bill won the Eisner Award for best book for "Harvey Kurtzman: The Man Who Created Mad and Revolutionized Humor in America." This was not only the best comics-related biography I had ever read, but one of the best biographies, period. With this book, Bill fulfilled his longtime dream of contributing something really meaningful to the history of American pop culture. |
Rest in Peace, Bill. You really did biography better than anyone ever has. |
