THE ART OF ALEX NIÑO
Almost Gone! Our Highest Recommendation. Born in the Philippines, Alex Niño is today considered one of the best comic artists in the United States. He began working for DC Comics during the 1970s "Filipino Invasion" but quickly revealed himself to be totally unique in his imaginative work. Fans used to wonder what drugs he was taking, but he claims everything comes from his amazing imagination. His first "Art of" book, Satan's Tears, quickly sold out and became a legend, rare to find and highly sought-after. He offers innovation, superb draftsmanship, and breathtaking design that defies the imagination. Auad Publishing, 2008. Out of Print....More.

BERNET
Almost Gone! Highly Recommended. Edited by Manuel Auad. Introduction by Will Eisner. Foreword by Joe Kubert. Spanish artist Jordi Bernet is known for his work on such comics as Torpedo 1936, Custer, Sarvan, Clara de Noche, Tex and Kraken. He first appeared in American comics in a 2001 Batman story for DC. With his emotionally expressive, bold and ironic style, Bernet has established himself as one of the masters of realistic comics. Clara and the adult and violent themes of Torpedo portray an artist comfortable with erotica and adult themes. Comic stories, sketches, studies and tributes by fellow artists such as Jordi Langaron, Carlos Nine, Eduardo Risso, Sergio Aragonés, Carlos Trillo and others. Auad, 2003. Out of Print. Foreword by Austin Briggs, Jr. From Auad Publishing in their Famous American Magazine Illustrators series: 160 pages of some of Austin Briggs‘ best black and white art and a great selection of color illustrations, most taken from originals. David Apatoff's comprehensive in-depth biography of Briggs was aided by an extensive interview with his son, Austin Briggs, Jr. Watch the Briggs style develop, from a pulp artist and Flash Gordon newspaper strip illustrator in fine line, inspired by Joseph Clement Coll, to a sophisticated artist doing story illustrations and automobile ads, reminding us of Ernie Fuchs and Alex Toth. Graphic Novels

THE STRINGBAGS
Original 3-part novel. Fact & Fiction Afterward by Ennis. Highly Recommended. By Garth Ennis. Art by P.J. Holden. Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, and Fascist Italy began World War II with aircraft that could devastate enemy warships and merchantmen at will. But Britain's Royal Navy had only the Fairey Swordfish, a biplane torpedo bomber in an age of monoplanes. It was underpowered and undergunned; a museum piece, an embarrassment. Its crews fully expected to be shot from the skies. Instead, they flew this novel plane legend -- against the Italian Fleet at Taranto and integral in sinking the Bismarck, to the deadly challenge of the famous Channel Dash as German ships tried to slip through the English Channel. Dead Reckoning, 2020...More.

Item Code: STRINGB
Hard Cover, 7x11, 192pg,
$29.95

Publisher Dead Reckoning has done a number of fine and quite unusual graphic novels, which look at aspects of WWII that have never before been addressed this way. See all their titles on our website. They include Churchill, Smedley, Once Upon a Time in France, Stalingrad Letter from the Volga, All Quiet on the Western Front, Night Witches, and Katusha: Girl Soldier of the Great Patriotic War.

Their first collection was the excellent, first-ever look at the popular comic strip and comic book title from The Golden Age: The Best of Don Winslow of the Navy [BEDWH. $29.95].

BIRD PARADE Signed
Signed & limited, 500! Highly Recommended. By Patrick Loehr. Introduction by Nathan Ballingrud. An unusual graphic novel, a dark, coming of age narrative about two young boys and a gun. Set in rural Colorado, the story exposes a somber world wherein notions of growing up are deeply intertwined with the mystique of firearms and family stories. The young narrator's eagerness to grow up compels him towards actions that ultimately shatter his childhood. The richly illustrated volume drawn in a surreal, ghostly style, is awash in muted textures of brown and gray--visually appropriate for this dark, thought-provoking tale. We like it, and it's quite a handsome production. Centipede Press, 2019...More.

Fantasy Art

THE MOUNTAIN OF SMOKE By Jeffrey Alan Love Signed
Boldly Signed with an ethereal doodle! from 500 copies. Limited to just our initial order. 51 paintings in acrylic, ink and pencil, which took him seven months to complete. The result is a wordless graphic novel of fantasy, where you create the story. Or simply a collection of outré fantastic scenes of a journey, otherworldly creatures, a bold warrior and a quest. Jeff is now sharing these personal works for the first time. The viewer follows along as the artist loses himself in his practice of letting his mind wander to see what it unveils. Showcases Jeff's textures and paint strokes to give viewers the intimacy of holding the actual sketchbook. Half of the paintings are accompanied by the artist's short captions and initial pencil sketches. Flesk, 2020...More.

J.A.W. COOPER GENESIS COLLECTION
Highly Recommended. A massive 224-page collection of drawings and paintings from the sold-out 2017 releases of Familiars, Flora and Fauna, and Viscera. This collection leads us on a journey into the violent, steaming innards of making art--raw, spontaneous and unfettered. Drawing on themes of the occult and the erotic, the artist explores animals as allegories for the human condition, and beautiful nude women interacting with this fantasy world. Flesk, 2020. From fairies and beautiful fantasy women, to--really--the most amazing illustrations of insects such as bees and dragonflies we have seen. We can only compare this side of her work to the great E.J. Detmold, who could actually romanticize insects with his high level of skill at water color and capturing the exact moment of dynamics. Law does this also, along with excellent design and creativity. Yet still we send at great cost robots equipped with small shovels that stubbornly dig remote arid soil in the hope of finding huddled fossils of ancient bacteria. LITTLE BIG HORN
The master of erotic art takes on a famous historical battle! Recommended. By Paolo Eleuteri Serpieri. Introduction by Roberto Guarino and Matteo Pollone. A new novel describing the famous Custer's battle. With his astonishing drawings Serpieri takes us to the battlefield of Little Big Horn, the most famous armed clash between a combined force of Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho against the 7th Cavalry of the US army, headed by General Custer. From the sexy Druuna to this is a leap, but he has done historical-oriented work at times in Druuna's travels through time. I think this is going to be very good, and probably accurate in its historical detail. Lo Scarabeo, 2019. Due July. ...More.

Diamond Comics News

Diamond has announced that they will restart shipping new items on May 19. They stopped shipping new product on April 1, but continued to fill our reorders. Fortunately we get Marvel, DC, Dark Horse and others elsewhere, so books from these publishers were not affected. But it did affect IDW Artist's Editions, Image, Dynamite, DC & Marvel facsimile editions, and a few smaller publishers. We hope to see these delayed books by the end of May.
