JOHN WILLIAM GODWARD
The Eclipse of Classicism By Vern Grosvenor Swanson. Plucked from oblivion, Godward serves as the last best example of 19th century Greco-Roman Classicism. Of a reclusive nature and painting in a style completely out-of-date with post-war Europe, his genius remained obscure. Godward's brilliance, with the recent revival of interest in his fallow Classicists, Alma-Tadema and Lord Leighton, is only now coming to light. Godward's art sought to portray peace, feminine beauty and ideal perfection in an age careening headlong into atrocity. He did so by marvelously painted and composed pictures of beautiful women in halycon classical environments. He was a niche painter whose subject, while arresting, was narrow. However, only Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was better at painting this genre of "patrician women on marble benches'". Antique Collectors' Club, 1998. Very Fine/ As New. Still in original shrink wrap....More.

THE AGE OF ROSSETTI, BURNE-JONES & WATTS
Symbolism in Britain 1860-1910 By Andrew Wilton. European symbolism has been much investigated, with some British exponents of the movement being given a place in those accounts. But it has always been assumed that Symbolism was essentially a Continental phenomenon, having only marginal links with what happened in Great Britain in the late 19th century. This text reverses that view by focusing on key British artists, some of whom predate their Continental colleagues in dealing with the characteristic themes of Symbolism and showing their close links with European centres such as Brussels and Paris. They are often so obscure that long-time fans (like myself) are still out looking for them. And then there is the wonderful Avon material, which now is very sought after. COBALT 60
Art by Vaughn Bode and Mark Bode. Story by Larry Todd. Cobalt 60 is one of the darkest, if not THE darkest, projects in Vaughn Bode's work. A post-apocalypse punch in the face, it's grim, ultra-violent and despairing, and comes with a killer ending that, like Bode's earlier The Man, shows The Cartoon Gooroo's mastery at delineating big themes with a minimum of words. He was an artist who wrote, rather than a writer who drew, and that's never clearer than here. Vaughn originally created Cobalt 60 in 1959, but the death dealing mutant didn't see print until 1968, in an issue of Wally Wood's Witzend, in the process winning him the Hugo award for Best Fanzine Artist of that year. The Donning Company, 1988. Very Fine. There is one small scuff on front cover....More.

THE ADVENTURES OF SWEET GWENDOLINE
Second Printing. By John Willie. This is the original tribute to John Alexander Scott Coutts (1902-1962), a.k.a. John Willie, and his popular underground heroine! Willie still stands as the finest bondage artist ever and his stories of Sweet Gwen are classics, first published in rarely-seen specialty magazines of the late 1940s and early '50s. Included are complete Gwendoline stories in ink and wash, as our poor girl gets tied up, gagged, put into a tight corset, and far more, often by dominating women and even by her own friend, a leather-clad secret agent. Willie's work nearly always had an innocence of sorts--it's never violent or truly threatening. Gwendoline's naiveté is both sweet and erotic, as she submits to one domination after another. Most in b&w  with some scarce color images. Belier Press, 1974. Fine. There are a few wrinkles on the spine and back of the dust jacket....More.
