WEIRD MYSTERIES MAGAZINE Volume 1
Replica Edition. Creepy & EC style stories from 1959! Highly Recommended. By Carl Wessler. Art by George Tuska, Angelo Torres, Joe Orlando, Carl Burgos & Paul Reinman. This has the original black and white interior pages, including all ads but a full color cover--two in fact, one with PS's promotion, and a 2nd reproducing EXACTLY the original cover. Tuska, Burgos and Reinman do several stories each. Orlando and Torres do just one each, but they are outstanding--in their best Creepy style! EERIE TALES MAGAZINE Volume 1
Replica of a rare 1959 horror magazine with GREAT artwork. Highly Recommended. Art by Al Williamson, Angelo Torres, Gray Morrow, Bob Powell, Joe Orlando, George Tuska & Paul Reinman. The contents of this were most likely for a never released, second issue of Weird Mysteries, since they have a horror host in common AND EC writer Carl Wessler again writes all the stories. And check out the ex-EC artists, as well as two stunningly great stories by a young Gray Morrow! This has the original black and white interior pages, including all ads but a full color cover--two in fact, one with PS's promotion, and a 2nd reproducing EXACTLY the original painted cover by George Tuska. PS Artbooks, 2020...More.

DISNEY MASTERS Volume 10 Donald Duck Scandal of the Epoch Express
Uncle Scrooge and a batch of great, Barks-style adventures! Highly Recommended. By Mau and Bas Heymans. 17 great tales as these superb creators channel Barks so well I can scarcely tell them from the Good Duck Artist's work. And Scrooge is in nearly every adventure here, including "Healers of the Andes," which takes the ducks back to the mountains of South America. Gladstone Gander also puts in a much-hated appearance as the world's luckist duck. Check out "Regulationary War," "Forty-Wink Zeke," "Bargain Battle!," "Winifred's Revenge," "Big Brain Blowout," and of course the title story. Fantagraphics, 2020...More.

ART DECO
Recommended. By Franziska Bolz. A brand new look at the entire world of Art Deco style. Reaching its peak in the 1920s, it was a new artistic language influencing urban and domestic architecture, and the entire world of design: furniture, fashion, mural painting, glassware, ceramics and graphics, from books to magazines to sales catalogs. This book offers a magnificently illustrated panorama of this ornamental aesthetic, illustrating and describing every facet of Deco design. Konemann, 2019...More.

ART DECO By Markus Hattstein
Highly Recommended. Art Deco is the decorative, distinctly aesthetic style of the years between 1920 and 1940. The movement embraced all areas of lifestyle and art. Art Deco was a commitment to functionaity and modern technology, from autos to industrial design. With over 500 illustrations, this volume showcases the complexity of the Art Deco style and its manifestations in architecture, fashion, advertising, everyday objects, transport, graphics like books and magazines, and other areas of life, with examples worldwide. ART NOUVEAU
Highly Recommended. By Uta Hasekamp. Art Nouveau was a phenomenon with many faces. Between 1890 and 1910, artists developed a variety of styles from the plant-like forms of the Belgian-French Art Nouveau to the ornamentation of the Viennese Secession. They were all striving to create a new, modern style and pursued a comprehensive renewal of art and, in some countries, also a renewed national identity. This shows the gorgeous buildings, interior design, objects, sculptures, posters, and graphic design that beautifully embraced this movement. Konemann, 2019...More.

GAUDÍ
Recommended. By Marina Linares. Antoni Gaudí's amazing, unfinished towering architecture in Barcelona is unique and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Impressive forms, rich colors, and ingenious structural solutions create syntheses of natural inspiration and technical innovation, of styles both historic and contemporary, and of Gaudí's own original genius. One of the most popular attractions in Spain, this Art Nouveau masterpiece is just the beginning of your exploration of this amazing creator, whose career began in 1883. Konemann, 2019...More.

NONSENSE! The Curious Story of Edward Gorey
Recommended. By Lori Mortensen. Art by Chloe Bristol. A beautifully illustrated and lyrical picture-book biography (for all ages) of eccentric and beloved writer and artist Edward Gorey. One of literature's most creepily creative authors and illustrators, the inspiration behind a generation of creators, from Lemony Snicket to Tim Burton. He went on to publish well over one hundred of his own books, stories that mingled sweetness and innocence, danger and darkness, all mixed with his own brand of silliness. Illustrated with Gorey-like humor and inspiration by Chloe Bristol. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2020...More.

NOTES ON A CASE OF MELANCHOLIA, OR: A LITTLE DEATH
By Nicholas Gurewitch. Death becomes a patient of a recently-bereaved psychoanalyst. The topic of discussion? His frolicsome child, who has no apparent interest in grim-reaping! Featuring an unfathomable number of lines which have been hand-chiseled into inked clay (aka wood-engraved), this labor of love by Nicholas Gurewitch invokes the morbid humor of his comic strip (The Perry Bible Fellowship) and the spooky silent-film qualities of the late Edward Gorey. Dark Horse, 2020...More.

MORE SEX, BETTER ZEN, FASTER BULLETS The Encyclopedia of Hong Kong Film
Recommended. By Stephan Hammond and Mike Wilkins. Post-WWII, creative freedom was scarce in Asia, but Hong Kong was a safe space for filmmakers seeking to profit from overseas Chinese markets and Chinatowns worldwide. This is the true story of the Hong Kong film industry, one that doesn't skimp on the good bits: the hyperkinetic films themselves. Included are intrepid firsthand accounts of the culture, from stars like Sammo Hung and Jackie Chan and filmmakers like Tsui Hark and Ringo Lam. Packed with photos, some nudity. Headpress, 2020. TARZAN AND THE VALLEY OF GOLD Hardcover
Highly Recommended. By Fritz Leiber. Cover by Richard Hescox. The year 1966 saw the release of one of the most unique Tarzan films ever made: Tarzan and the Valley of Gold. Starring former NFL linebacker Mike Henry in his debut as the cinematic ape-man, the film portrayed a cultured and refined Tarzan who seemed more James Bond than the unsophisticated ape-man of past films. The depiction surprised and puzzled some moviegoers, but we fans rejoiced at finally seeing ERB's Tarzan. Enter critically acclaimed fantasy author Fritz Leiber, whose novelization of the film became the first authorized Tarzan novel to be written by an author other than Burroughs. Far from retelling of the movie, it was a faithful installment in the literary saga of the ape-man, with frequent callouts to Burroughs' original Tarzan canon and myriad creative elements added to the storyline! Mature Readers

A third title in the popular Sex and Horror series is here. These each feature quite amazing artists who did tons of work in Italy on their wildest magazines and comics, yet who are completely unknown in the U.S. outside of the most dedicated fanbase. The new title features the Art of Fernando Carcupino, a career talent of pin up and erotic horror covers.

The first two titles, released in 2015 and 2016, are currently sold out. I hope for new printings at some point.

Also this week we just got a limited number of copies of The Best of Jordi Bernet’s Clara. This has been out of print for some time now; it came out in 2006. But one of the principals involved turned up a case for us to offer. It was published at $24.95—but copies on the internet begin at $52, and one of our fellow dealers lists it for $75. So we’ve made it just $34.95, while they last. Clara is a humorous working girl of the night. Bernet is the creator of Torpedo.

News and Notes

The Fantastic Paintings of Frank Frazetta

We've just arranged to get our shipment direct from the publisher overseas, which should mean we will have copies long before other sources. All other copies have to go from Asia to the East Coast first, and then ship to various distributors, and then to stores. With Diamond currently not shipping, we don't know how that will play by then (it hits the U.S. in late May). But we are getting all of our regular shipments from other distributors and publishers.

This should be a fine book, and our advance orders are already strong. There is no softcover planned, it will only be available in hardcover [FANPFH. $39.95] and deluxe, which comes in a slipcase with a variant cover and 16 bonus pages [FANPFD. $69.95]. See our website for more Frazetta collections, both in print and in Rare Books.

Just this morning we received notification from our freight forwarder, RR Donnelly, that many countries will encounter delivery delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The major countries mentioned include: Italy, France, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland and Mexico. At this point there have been no restrictions on incoming packages, only delays due to postal systems downsizing to protect their workers. We appreciate your understanding.

Catalogs for International Customers: when these shipped, about 10 days ago, we were told there could be delays with these, since airline flights have been cut back. Rest assured you will get your copy—if you are a customer, having ordered in the past 12 months—but it may take longer than usual.
