Graphic Novels

ABRAHAM STONE
Three complege Graphic Novels Our Highest Recommendation. Kubert created a new character for three mature graphic novels he created for SAF, the Czech company who published his Fax from Sarajevo. He both wrote and drew these, with a hero who begins his journey after the murder of his mother and brother and being left for dead on their farm in Pennsylvania, circa 1910. Abraham Stone travels to New York for his first revenge-filled tale; then to California for a taste of silent-filmmaking and the high life, and finally to Mexico, where he meets Pancho Villa! Brilliantly drawn, some of Kubert's finest work, with a very special Afterword on his love for comics and how he works. Dark Horse, 2020...More.

Item Code: ABRST
Soft Cover, 7x10, 152pg, Full Color
$19.99

Here is much more by Joe Kubert. We have the original Fax from Sarajevo, hardcover and signed on the jacket [RB1457. $100] as well as the new edition just published [FAXF. $19.99, $17.99].

R. CRUMB SKETCHBOOK Volume 5 1989-1998
Highly Recommended. By Robert Crumb. Edited by Dian Hanson. As this volume opens Crumb is 46. These middle years bring refinement of his lifelong turmoil and further honing of artistic talent, with many serious portraits mixed with hilarious introspection and one- and two-page strips and never-used comic covers. More words accompany the drawings, demonstrating Crumb's brilliant powers of observation. The family's move to France in 1991 is heralded by a switch from portraits of apple-cheeked American girls sketched while waiting for food in California cafes to portraits of girls in French cafes, pastorals of French countryside, and homeless beggars in the Metro. Taschen, 2020. Mature Readers...More.

THE ART OF CUPHEAD Deluxe Signed
Signed & limited, bonus portfolio and slipcase. Recommended. Beautiful limited edition: cloth slipcase featuring exclusive art and a set of acetate sheets in a separate portfolio, breaking down the game's classic start screen illustration, directly from the team that created it! Return to the golden age of 1930s animation with an art book celebrating the acclaimed "run & gun" game, Cuphead! Gaming tie-in aside, this is like looking closely at a new, undiscovered Max Fleisher or Ub Iwerks cartoon from the 1930s. He notes both as direct inspiration! Dark Horse, 2020...More.

Here we have three great issues of Weird Adventures--not the Ziff-Davis title but the far stranger run from tiny P.L. You'll find bondage/hypodermic panels, male bondage/torture, and a severed head story. A real treat is "The She-Wolf Killer" by Matt Baker. But even better, we have two more complete issues: iconic, good-girl Avon one-shot rarities, both with wild covers and stories by by A.C.Hollingsworth. Also available in softcover, with a different cover. PS Artbooks, 2020...More.

PRE-CODE CLASSICS OPERATION PERIL Volume 2
Collects #5-9, 1951-52. Recommended. By Richard Hughes. Art by Ogden Whitney et al. Maybe the brightest light in the ACG firmament and long overlooked is the offbeat adventure/sci fi title Operation Peril. This second volume is another winner, boasting stories written by Richard Hughes (of course) and artwork by Ogden Whitney (doing very fine work) plus Leonard Starr, and Ken Bald. A regular cast is in each issue: two fisted adventurer Danny Danger, womanizing drifter and he-man Typhoon Tyler, and the Time Travelers team, each in good, long 12 and 13-page stories! PS Artbooks, 2020...More.

Item Code: PCOP02H

Ace Magazines' The Beyond continues apace with the same excellent creative line-up, from the golden years of the early 50's. Jim McLaughlin, Ace Baker, Maurice Gutwirth, Gene Colan, Mike Sekowsky, Richard Case, Ken Rice, Louis Zansky and Lou Cameron. "Scourge of the Scorpion Cult," "Return from the Great Abyss," "The Doorway to Yesterday," "The Winged Spectres of Dismal Swamp," "On the Other Side of Death's Door," "The Vampire of the Opera," "Leopard Girl's Dread Domain." PRE-CODE CLASSICS SPACE ADVENTURES Volume 2
Collects #6-10, 1953-54. Recommended. Art by Dick Giordano, Steve Ditko et al. #6 is a special flying saucer issue! #7 has a sex-transformation story, #8 & 10 have robot covers, #9 has an A-Bomb story. The second bumper-full line-up from Charlton Comics' fearsomely far out and appropriately titled other-worldly comic from the 1950s. Featuring some of the earliest work by Steve Ditko (beginning in #10 with cover and art), future DC artist and editor Dick Giordano, and Tony Tallarico. This is Charlton's imitation of the hallowed EC sci-fi titles: it's quirky, uneven, but today issues are far scarcer! PS Artbooks, 2020...More.

BEST OF WITZEND
Our Highest Recommendation. By Wallace Wood, Steve Ditko, Frank Frazetta, et al. Fed up with the formulaic restrictions, censors, and no creator's rights in mainstream comics, Wallace Wood created and published his own magazine beginning in 1965. It was the first ever "pro" fanzine. It became a cauldron of bubbling creativity for Wood and his friends to produce their own personal work, without regard to commercial constraints. And with friends like Frank Frazetta, Al Williamson, Gray Morrow, and Reed Crandall, it was bound to be a great ride. (And that was just the first issue!). In later issues, Steve Ditko, Alex Toth, Art Spiegelman, Vaughn Bodé, Jim Steranko, Jeff Jones, Howard Chaykin, Bernie Wrightson — and dozens more — joined in. Fantagraphics, 2018...More.

OWEN JONES
Warehouse find, 2006. Design, Ornament, Architecture, and Theory in an Age in Transition. Highly Recommended. By Carol A. Hrvol Flores. Art by Owen Jones. Owen Jones was, and still remains, a highly influential force in the world of architecture and design. His prolific and impressive work—captured here in its various stages through drawings, architectural plans, and photographs—is as current, imaginative, and important now as when it first emerged more than 125 years ago. Jones was an authority on Oriental design and was commissioned to decorate the interior of the famous Crystal Palace. In 1856 he completed his monumental Grammar of Ornament, which remains one of the most influential works on design ever published and is still in print!

ART NOUVEAU MÜNCHEN, WIEN, PRAHA
Recommended. By Thomas Hauffe. Between 1890 and the beginning of the First World War, a new international style developed in architecture and design. Following the example of the English Arts and Crafts movement, the representatives of Art Nouveau turned against the eclectic excesses of the Victorian era, embracing organic forms, plant ornamentation and functional free-flowing architecture. This volume shows the highlights of Art Nouveau as it was interpreted, everywhere a bit differently, in Germany, Austria, Bohemia, Hungary, Italy and Switzerland. Konemann, 2020. Due July. ...More.
