EC ARCHIVES IMPACT
Collects #1-5, 1955. Highly Recommended. Art by Evans, Krigstein, Ingels, Crandall, Davis, Kamen, & Orlando! The complete run, including the famous "Master Race" story, about the holocaust and Nazi hunters. This #1 was NOT code-approved. A powerful title, with four stories by Reed Crandall, three stories and a cover by Jack DavisGraham Ingels in every issue, Joe Orlando in two, Krigstein in two. EC always loved their shock, twist endings, so offering a title that was all about those, well, what a natural. This title kicked off EC's New Trend as they attempted to come up with work that could be code-approved. Dark Horse, 2020...More.

FAMOUS FIRST EDITION New Fun #1
New Fun Comics #1, 1935. Essays by Jerry Bails, Roy Thomas & Nicky Wheeler-Nicholson. Highly Recommended. By Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson et al. For the first time ever, the very first comic book published by DC Comics is reprinted. Published at the start of 1935, New Fun Comics #1 made history as the first comic book made up of new stories instead of reprints of newspaper comic strips. Cowboys, gunfighters, space heroes, adventurers and soldiers of fortune populated these pages, each of which is a separate one-page installment in the style of Sunday newspaper comics, but twice normal comic book size. Here reproduced that huge size, in hardcover. DC Comics, 2020...More.

DC'S 1ST ISSUE SPECIALS
Collects #1-13, 1975-76. Highly Recommended. In 1975, DC brought back the anthology try-out concept, so successful with Showcase. These never-before-reprinted 1970s stories included new concepts from writer/artist Jack Kirby (Atlas, Dingbats, Manhunter) plus stories illustrated by Steve Ditko, Mike Grell (Warlord) and Walter Simonson (Doctor Fate). It also brought back beloved characters like Metamorpho, the Creeper, Starman and the New Gods. And here are "off the wall" concepts like the Green Team (crime fighting teenage millionaires!) and the gritty Lady Cop, Code-Name Assassin and The Outsiders. DC Comics, 2020...More.

MEPHISTO Speak of the Devil
Highly Recommended. By Stan Lee, John Byrne,et al. Art by Neal Adams, John Buscema et al. Mephisto, lord of the underworld, is the most diabolical entity in the Marvel Universe -- and he's put its greatest heroes through hell! Join Mephisto as he claims the Silver Surfer's soul in his first appearance -- superbly drawn by John Buscema -- in 1968. In more beautifully drawn adventures, he trades tricks with Loki and Thor in two early Neal Adams stories, strikes down the Fantastic Four in a John Byrne issue, stars in a special Doctor Strange graphic novel by Roger Stern & Mike Mignola, fights Daredevil by John Romita, Jr. and Al Williamson! TALES OF THE BATMAN Steve Englehart
1974-2005. Recommended. By Steve Englehart. Art by Marshall Rogers, Terry Austin, Walt Simonson et al. In 1977 comics writer Steve Englehart left Marvel Comics following acclaimed runs on titles like The Avengers, Captain America and Doctor Strange, and came to DC to write Batman in the pages of Detective Comics. Together with rising-star artist Marshall Rogers, Englehart crafted a dark, moody run of stories in which Batman faces his own lonely existence while struggling against one of his earliest foes, Dr. Hugo Strange. This run also includes the renowned "Joker Fish" storyline. DC Comics, 2020...More.

News and Notes

New Signage

We have a very wonderful local customer, Glenn Ridge, who has also become a friend. Glenn's also an artist and all-around practical handyman type, now that he's retired. He noticed our wooden sign out front was sadly deteriorating after years of weather here. So too was the metal sign on our door. So he volunteered to restore both, perhaps a bit before he realized quite how much was involved. We gained new redwood posts, new framing, and some fine, meticulous artistic work. And he quietly pulled it off, without even walking in the door, since we're not open to the public during this virus. And he did a beautiful job. So I wanted to share this, we are so pleased.

A funny side story—our landlord sent someone by to clear up several downed branches and debris caused by a major snowfall we had a couple of weeks back. This fellow saw Glenn sawing off the rotted posts and taking away the sign. Our landlord emailed me, were we closing and he was the last one to find out? I wasted no time setting things straight, assuring him we have no plans for a change. In fact, we're every landlord's dream, in the same building here for 34 years.

Clover Press

This is an interesting new publisher. One reason I wanted to point them out to our customers is that Craig Yoe is already putting together projects with them, such as the Pirates book above. And of course they enlisted Denis Kitchen & friends to do the Spirit 80th Celebration. So they already have a good track record, not to mention that co-founder Ted Adams is the former CEO of graphic novel publisher IDW. They plan to release prose works (like the Road to Oz, above), graphic novels, art books, and other material. Here's more, taken from an article in Publisher's Weekly:

Clover Press, [Ted Adams] said, will focus on “the book trade and the direct market (or comics shop market) with an extremely eclectic list of titles,” including genre fiction and licensed properties.

He said the house will be “a boutique publisher,” and release no more than two to three books a month offering both original titles and reprints of classic works. Although the house is aligned with IDW, Adams said Clover Press titles will not be distributed by IDW.

Covid 19 Update

We are continuing to ship on time and get in new items, as you can see above. It pays off to be small and flexible in this case, and also we are in a rural county (in the foothills of the Sierras, 60 miles from the nearest city, Sacramento). There are a very low number of cases here.

Thank you to all of you for your well wishes.

Diamond Comics just announced a layoff of their staff, after they stopped shipping new product as of April 1. However, we've just confirmed they are (or were) still shipping reorders only, as we have a couple boxes coming.

Publishers not shipping are CAV (adult videos), ERB Inc (though they keep promising to soon), Flesk Publishing, Houghton Mifflin and teNeues. This is affecting a small number of backlist titles for us, but otherwise we are getting new items and restocks as usual.

Out of Print Report

From Olivia, the Dita Von Teese and Masimi Max Enamel Pins are now gone. The Collected Sergio Toppi Volume 2 is OP, and only one copy left--but I anticipate a new printing since they did that with Vol 1. And the Silver Surfer Parable 30th Anniversary is sold out, too.
