KYOSAI The Israel Goldman Collection
Recommended. By Koto Sadamura. The Japanese artist Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-89) saw Japan transform itself from a feudal country into a modern state. The turbulent times in which he lived are reflected in his riotous images, in which skeletons, demons and ghosts rub shoulders with classically rendered ukiyo-e courtesans. Among his most charming and inventive works are his brilliant depictions of animals — crows, frogs and elephants, among many others — which often stand in for political figures of the day. This small but enchanting book reveals a cavalcade of Kyosai's creatures from the renowned Israel Goldman Collection, with an introduction to the artist and his menagerie by Koto Sadamura, a leading authority on Kyosai. Jean-Pierre Dionnet, one of the founders of Metal Hurlant, started a new genre in comics — heroic fantasy — when he collaborated with artist Jean-Claude Gal (Diosamante) in late 1974 in the first issue of Metal Hurlant, the forerunner of Heavy Metal. Think Game of Thrones! Witness, with the help of Gal's superb and intricate style, the devastating effects of war as you follow this other-worldly army's forward progress, into a world steeped in the old gods a la Lovecraft. And then join Arn's bloody quest for revenge. First published in France. Humanoids, 2017.  ...More.

THE GREAT GATSBY
Closeout Price! Recommended. By F. Scott Fitzgerald. Introduction by Blake Hazard. The story is captured by artist Aya Morton, who works in soft pastels and water-color. Here is the mysteriously wealthy Gatsby and his tragic love for the beautiful Daisy. Iconic text has been artfully distilled by Fred Fordham, who keeps much of the original dialogue — so much, it took me three sittings to read this. It's dense! Scribner, 2020....More.

Classics Illustrated Hardcovers on Sale

This is the first nine of 30 titles we just scored and put on sale. These are from the current England-based publisher who took over from Jack Lake after 2015. We’ve never carried these in hardcover before. If they do well, we may be able to get another 30 or so…the publisher did 65 hardcovers before electing to stick to softcover. We’re also working on getting a Deluxe Boxed Three Musketeers Set (it was the very first Classic in 1941) and some other specials at regular price. But it’ll be a while, they’ll have to come in from England.

George Perez 1954-2022

We lost yet another artist recently, after James Bama and then Neal Adams. George was another mover and shaker in comics, best known for his wonderful and many DC titles, most especially Wonder Woman.

He came to prominence in the 1970s penciling The Avengers for Marvel Comics, and returned to the franchise in the 1990s. In the 1980s he penciled The New Teen Titans, which became one of DC Comics' top-selling series. He penciled DC's landmark limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths, followed by relaunching Wonder Woman as both writer and penciller for the rebooted series. In the meantime, he worked on other comics published by Marvel, DC, and other companies into the 2010s. He was known for his detailed and realistic rendering, and his facility with complex crowd scenes.

Underwood Books File Copies

We are getting more titles online and you can get an advance look at them here. Some are very limited in quantity, such as Best of Gahan Wilson [BOGW. $50] with just four as-new copies (originally published at $15 in 2004). And Clive Barker's Shadows in Eden [CBSHA. $45] with corner wear, from 1991. Also only four available.

Also too few to feature, we have three copies of Shameless Art [SHAAH. $15/$9.95] and five copies of Strange Days: Aliens, Adventurers, Devils and Dames [STRDH. $17.95/$9.95. We're working on getting more of these last two titles, along with Frazetta Telling Stories and several other Underwood titles that we previously offered on sale, before they sold out.
