My favorite book this week is Tarzan The New Adventures, hands down, by Roy Thomas and Tom Grindberg! Terry and the Pirates Master Edition Vol 1 is a close second, which comes packaged with an entire bonus book, Vol 13. The next Marvel Comics Library is here, The Avengers, following up the sold-out Spider-Man. Plus a cool Philip Jose Farmer novel with art by Roy Krenkel, J.H. MARVEL COMICS LIBRARY AVENGERS Volume 1 Collects #1-20, 1963-65. Recommended. In-depth history by Kurt Busiek. By Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Don Heck, Wally Wood et al. The Spider-Man Library, first in this series, is sold out. Don't miss this new mammoth second collection. Super-hero teams had been around since the 1940s, but Thor, Ant Man, the Wasp, Hulk, and Iron Man broke new ground when they joined forces to form the Avengers in 1963. They not only fought together, they occasionally fought each other! The first 20 stories never before reproduced so large, in this Hulk-sized volume, includes the Silver Age return of Captain America (#4), and the wild original stories of the early team with The Hulk, in and out of the team, Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man and the Wasp! Such a challenge could not be ignored—The account of Ironcastle’s expedition of daring but inexperienced amateurs became one of the classic novels of the French writer, J.-H. Rosny, who was a contemporary of Verne, Wells, and ER Burroughs. Here the story is translated and retold by Philip José Farmer. Meteor House, 2022. Out of print....More. This graphic novel imagines what Frank Lee did next to stay one step ahead of the manhunt for himself and his two comrades. JOSEPH SMITH AND THE MORMONS Decades in the making and already generating advance praise, an original graphic novel biography about the life of Joseph Smith, founder of the Church of Latter-Day Saints. Author and illustrator Noah Van Sciver, who was raised a Mormon, covers one of history’s most controversial figures, who founded a religion which is practiced by millions. We learn about the anti-Mormon threats and violence which caused his followers to move from New York to Ohio, Smith’s receiving the divine commandment of plural marriage, his imprisonment, his announcement to run for president of the United States, and his ultimate murder by an angry mob in 1844 at the young age of 38! Abrams ComicArts, 2022....More. Item Code: JOSSH Hard Cover, 6x10, 464pg, Full Color $29.99 |
While it's very unlikely many of us, myself included, might take the time to read an entire prose novel about Joseph Smith, Frank Lee (Escape from Alcatraz), Janis Joplin, Georgia O’Keefe, the Napoleonic War, or Hitler’s last days, I really enjoy graphic novels about these subjects! It’s always unique seeing how different creators interpret these subjects into comic book form. I nearly always come away having learned a great deal and with a new perspective on subjects both familiar and entirely new to me. – Bud |

R/EVOLUTION THE ART OF JON FOSTER Hardcover Closeout Price! Recommended. Edited by Cathy and Arnie Fenner, and Irene Gallo. Jon Foster creates irresistibly dark demimondes populated by retro robots, Star Wars villains, and creepy goth-inspired creatures that recall the work of James Gurney (Dinotopia), Rick Berry, H. R. Giger, and past masters of the grotesque like Goya. Yet his work is inimitably his own, from the noirish lighting, off-kilter angles, and kinetic sense of movement to his singular technique of starting a project with oils and then scanning it into a computer to add more startling visual effects. Underwood Books, 2006. Out of Print....More. Item Code: REVOH Hard Cover, 9x12, 128pg, Full Color $35.00 |

THE ART OF RON COBB Recommended. By Jacob Johnston. During his sixty-year career, Ron Cobb started out as a radical underground comics cartoonist, but his far larger claim to fame was his concept art for some of the biggest films in sci-fi cinema. From designing spaceships for Alien, Dark Star, and Firefly and the Delorean from Back to the Future to character designs for Conan the Barbarian and creature concepts for Star Wars and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Ron has left a legacy of artwork behind to inspire future generations of concept artists. Includes exclusive insights from the talent he worked with: James Cameron, Joe Johnston, Robert Zemeckis, Bob Gale, and Nick Castle. Titan, 2022. Due: Aug. ...More. More Passings I’m sad to say that Tim Sale has passed away. He was born in 1956 and left us on June 16. Tim was an Eisner Award-winning comics artist, best known for his work on the DC Comics characters Batman and Superman and for influencing depictions of the Caped Crusader in numerous films. RC Harvey, comic artist and author of many books ABOUT comics history, has also passed away, on July 7. He was born in 1937. We handled virtually all of his books, just a few of which were The Art of the Comic Book (1994), Accidental Ambassador Gordo (2000), The Life and Art of Murphy Anderson (2003), and Meanwhile: A Biography of Milton Caniff (2007), a massive bio to end bios on Caniff. He did a charming bookplate for us and was a longtime customer and supporter of ours. We’ll miss him. |
