COMIC BOOK CREATOR #29
Highly Recommended. Edited by Jon B. Cooke. Don McGregor's life and talent is spotlighted in a comprehensive retrospective, the first issue devoted predominately to a writer! From his Hopalong Cassidy obsessed Rhode Island childhood to ubiquitous presence on Marvel Comics letters pages in the 1960s and early ‘70s debut as Warren Publications scripter, to his breakout and blossoming at the House of Ideas, the superb scribe discusses his triumphs on Black Panther, Killraven, Sabre, Detectives Inc., Ragamuffins, and so much more.. See all back issues here. The two issues with my interview, #27 and 28, remain available [CBCR27, 28. $10.95 each]. Okay, they also feature Paul Gulacy and Steve Bissette, that’s pretty cool too.

ALTER EGO #180

MARVEL VALUE STAMPS A Visual History
Recommended. By Roy Thomas. The story of the inspired comic book promotional campaign, collected here for the first time. In 1973 Stan Lee devised this ingenious promotional campaign, which appeared on the letters pages of monthly comics. Readers could cut out all 100 of these super hero and super villain stamps and place them in a special mail-order booklet. Once complete, these stamp books could then be redeemed for special discounts and exclusive merchandise — and the comics were ruined! The program was so successful, a second set was released in 1975. Now, for the first time, these original stamp books, stamps, and all of the surrounding ephemera (every single page the stamps were on including editorial, letters, ads, and cool stuff) and source material are collected into one must-have volume for collectors and fans. Abrams, 2023....More.

Item Code: MARSTAH
Hard Cover, 6x9, 368pg, Full Color
$29.99 $26.99
This really surprised me. I couldn’t imagine why I’d care, but Roy Thomas has done a fine job with this, with a long look at how they came to be, as Stan’s pet project. And the variety of material reproduced from 1973-75 is a great snapshot of Marvel in one of their heydays.

Yon-Rogg for defending the people of Earth, Captain Mar-Vell assumes the human identity of Walter Lawson and becomes our planet’s protector against an awesome array of interstellar enemies. OTTO BINDER'S THE UNWANTED
Recommended. Art by Angelo Torres and Stefan Koidl. Introduction and foreword by Emil Ferris. The Unwanted is Otto Binder's response to the 1950s McCarthy era of paranoia and intolerance, couched in metaphorical science fiction terms. Written in the 1950s and never before published! A civilization of "Mastermen" rules the galactic empire and must evaluate citizens of the various planets for inclusion into an imperial congress. Membership means access to technology, prosperity and protection. We learn the priorities and values of these visitors and why, in evaluating this planet, the Mastermen find a world shockingly different from their own. Fantagraphics, 2023....More.

FIGHT COMICS FEATURING SENORITA RIO Volume 3 Hardcover
Collects #51-71, 1947-50. Highly Recommended. Art by Jack Kamen, Nicky Cardy, Lily Renee et al. It's time to finish this fight with the third and final volume featuring Señorita Rio, "The Queen of Spies!" The lovely actress-turned-secret-agent survived in a male-dominated world due to her extraordinary skills. She was an excellent markswoman, extremely athletic, capable of amazing feats and an expert fighter, skilled in jiu-jitsu and fencing. She battles Axis agents throughout South America. Wonderful artwork throughout! Señorita Rio was one of the first female and Latin characters created by Fiction House and had a long, successful run. PS Artbooks, 2023. ...More.

Item Code: FCSR03H

$52.99

BLACK MAGIC Volume 1
Collects #1-4, 1950-51. Highly Recommended. Simon & Kirby created this outstanding pre-code horror series. And they drew the covers and multiple stories for each issue, the first five thick 52-pagers. This is Kirby at his best, honing his skills 9 years before he and Stan began their monster run in the Marvels. These stories are more supernatural, nightmare visions, magic, witches...character driven and still very readable! Additional artists, all working in the S&K studio, are Mort Meskin, Leonard Starr and George Roussos, three solidly good artists and storytellers. PS Artbooks, 2023....More.

Item Code: BLAM01
Soft Cover, 7x10, 212pg, Full Color
$34.99
We currently know of no plans for a hardcover version of this. I don’t think PS is doing hardcovers of these new, extra-thick softcover editions.

RACE FOR THE MOON / THRILLS OF TOMORROW Volume 1
Collects Thrills of Tomorrow #17-20, 1954-55 and Race for the Moon #1-3, 1958. Our Highest Recommendation. By Simon & Kirby, Al Williamson, Bob Powell et al. Finishing off the run of Harvey Horror Comics, PS Artbooks brings you the enormous talents Jack Kirby and Al Williamson in this unique Flipbook format, weighing in at a larger than usual 250 pages. In Race, Kirby and Williamson work together on three stories in #3 and FOUR in #4!! Thrills was a reprint title, but it's loaded: it has Simon & Kirby's Stuntman from 1947, several stories including his origin, all beautiful stuff. And it reprints pre-code horror from Witches Tales #7 and Tomb of Terror #1. PS Artbooks, 2023....More.

Item Code: RACM01

Soft Cover, 7x10, 184pg, Full Color
$32.99

SPACE WAR Volume 4
Collects #16-20, 1962-63. By Joe Gill. This bumper-full science-fiction feast from Charlton Comics’ other-worldly Space War has everything you could imagine from "Rescue in Space" to "The Brain Master." Dick Giordano, Bill Molno, Rocco Mastroserio, and Charles Nicholas! Space War ran from 1959 to 1964, one of several Charlton titles to carry on the traditions begun with EC and DC’s Strange Adventures and Mystery in Space. The quality of material was never too great, but beside the occasional classic cover it gave us another perspective on life and death in outer space from youngster Giordano and his fellow creators. Dick Giordano, Bill Molno, Rocco Mastroserio, and Charles Nicholas! PS Artbooks, 2023. ...More.

STRANGE SUSPENSE STORIES Volume 6 Hardcover
Collects #43-47, 1959-60. Recommended. Cover by Ditko. This Charlton fantasy/sci-fi title boasted work by Steve Ditko, whose moody, individualistic touch came to dominate Charlton's supernatural titles and led to deserved fame over at Marvel. He was Charlton's shining light back here, and at his best in this run. Also here: two stories that seem to be by Matt Baker and perhaps another inker, but uncredited in Overstreet. They're not the best of his work but still a cut above. PS Artbooks, 2023. ...More.

Steve Ditko provides three covers and multiple stories in three issues, all excellent pre-Spider-Man work, backed up by Charles Nicholas, Bill Fraccio, Bill Molno, and Rocco Mastroserio. Charlton creators were given much more of a free rein and able to produce some special jewels among a never-ending concoction of fantasy-supernatural and horror tales and science fiction stories. GORGO Volume 1 Hardcover
Collects #1-5, 1961-62. Highly Recommended. By Joe Gill. Art by Steve Ditko, Dick Giordano, Sam Glanzman et al. Steve Ditko’s artwork is perfect for this Silver Age monster tale! He draws the complete 22-page first issue, cover and art for #2 and 3, and the cover for #4. Additional artists include Sam Glanzman, Charles Nicholas, Rocco Mastroserio, Bill Molno, and Marvel’s very own Jack Kirby inker, Joe Sinnott. After a seaquake, a huge lizard-like creature walked out of the ocean and almost destroyed a fishing village in Ireland—¦and a legend was born. PS Artbooks. 2022....More.

WORLDS OF FEAR Volume 1
Collects #1-5, 1951-52. Highly Recommended. From Fawcett, it's 1952 and the best artists in the studio were working hard to outdo the competition over at EC Comics. Shelly Moldoff, Bernard Baily (with some killer covers), Bob Powell (four top-drawer stories), George Evans (in his best EC style), Mike Sekowsky, Bob McCarty (under-rated but fine artist), Harry Harrison (Wally Wood's studio-mate and collaborator) and painter Norman Saunders doing covers! Lurid, fun horror and sci-fi. Lurid, fun horror and sci-fi. PS Artbooks, 2023....More.

Item Code: PCWOF01
Soft Cover, 7x10, 184pg, Full Color

We have just three copies left of the hardcover edition of this, published in 2017 and now out of print [PCW0F01H. $59.99]. Click here for more pre-code and super-hero collections from Fawcett. They were the home of Captain Marvel in the 1940s and were at one time outselling DC and Superman. All their comics were way above the average.

But we have a few too many, so save now on Serpieri: Eros 1, 2, and Serpieri West.

News & Notes

The Fantastic Worlds of Frank Frazetta

Today is Frank Frazetta's birthday! He would have been 95.

As I write this, on Tuesday, we have twenty copies left. About half of these have slightly bumped container boxes, but the books are pristine. We blew through 50 copies since I said last week that we had plenty left. Well! This is the best selling book we’ve had, maybe even including the History of EC Comics, also from Taschen.

We also have more coming. Taschen was able to divert copies in Europe and we are assured we will be getting more of the numbered first edition. We’ll take backorders when our stock is gone, and fill them in order received. I’d say we are looking at four weeks at least, maybe six, so mid March to early April, until we see them here.

Roger Dean in Grass Valley!

You will never, ever imagine who showed up in Grass Valley last weekend. It turns out Roger Dean had an exhibit at a local gallery and I just learned about it at the very last minute. We’d met once before at my booth at San Diego Comic-Con, perhaps 15 years ago, and he made a point of trying to contact me, for which I am so very grateful. And his presentation was superb. And his paintings, amazing. He works very large and in traditional format, not digital. We had a wonderful chance to visit after the show.

Download Catalog

He has a new book planned and of course we will let you know as soon as it’s firmed up with the publisher. He still lives south of London. His most famous album covers include work for Pink Floyd, Yes and Asia, among others. He designed logos for Yes, Virgin Records and Dragon’s Dream, who of course published not only his work, but that of Patrick Woodroffe and The Studio. And he did stage sets for Yes, and part of the presentation was a look at one of their live concerts.

Roger was the Grand Master in Expose 11, and his art books include the legendary best seller Views, and Magnetic Storm. See more about him here. and just Google him for his latest work, he's doing amazing paintings!

Catalog Cover

Rhonda Libbey did the artwork that we chose for our latest catalog. We went carefully through the new Infected by Art and found her piece very appealing and different. Here is a link to her website if you’d like to learn more about her.

Upcoming Shows

We’ll be exhibiting at:

55th California International Antiquarian Book Fair, Pasadena, February 10-12

Sacramento Antiquarian Book Fair, March 25

Hope to see you there!
