THE ART OF CLASSIC CRIME AND MYSTERY MOVIES
Highly Recommended. By Ed Hulse. This large-format coffee-table volume unveils over 800 posters, offering a visual journey through the genre's evolution from its earliest days to the gritty films of the 1970s, including rare foreign films and offbeat, rare lobby cards and more. Distinguished film (and pulp) historian Ed Hulse meticulously curates each chapter, providing insightful commentary and rare historical tidbits. From the emergence of genre archetypes to the rise of international "noir" films, Hulse's expertise shines through. Thoughtfully designed, grouping posters by theme and showcasing them in ample size allows readers to appreciate the intricate details of each piece of art. Special features highlight key figures in the industry, complemented by behind-the-scenes photos and firsthand interviews conducted by Hulse himself. Schiffer, 2025....More.

THE ART OF PULP FICTION An Illustrated History of Vintage Paperbacks
Our Highest Recommendation. Edited by Ed Hulse, with Will Murray, Gary Lovisi and David Saunders. Wow, this looks even better than I could have imagined. Finally, THE book on vintage paperback art — a visual feast of great artwork! -Bud. From 1940 to 1970, paperbacks eclipsed pulp magazines and hardbound books as the most popular delivery vehicle for escapist fiction. And it was all about the cover art. To catch the eyes of potential buyers they were adorned with covers that were invariably vibrant, frequently garish, and often lurid.IDW, 2021. ...More.

GREEN LANTERN The Silver Age Omnibus Volume 2
New printing. Collects #36-75, 1965-70. Our Highest Recommendation. By John Broome. Art by Gil Kane, with Sid Greene and Murphy Anderson. An amazing five more years of the original Green Lantern/Hal Jordan stories. The three big DC Silver Age hits and fan favorite series in the early sixties were The Flash, Adam Strange in Mystery in Space and Green Lantern. These are the tales that established Hal Jordan as the greatest member of the Green Lantern Corps and offered fans brilliant storytelling and Gil Kane's wonderful artwork. This was the thinking fan's series. Since GL's ring could create just about anything, instead of having punch-outs with the bad guys, he simply out-thought them, using his ring to create defensive and offensive stuff of all sorts. The ring could create dams to stop runaway rivers, giant hammers to swat threats out of the sky, an invulnerable shield, blinding light, a giant bow-and-arrow... Also: Cross-overs with the Golden Age Green Lantern, plus first appearances of Sinestro, Evil Star, Black Hand, Dr. Polaris, Star Sapphire and more. DC Comics, 2025. Rush Service and International shipping could require an additional charge. ...More.

MARVEL MAY 1965 Omnibus
Collects Strange Tales #135, The X-Men #12, Journey Into Mystery #118 and a whole lot more, 1945-63. Recommended. Marvel proudly celebrates the 60th anniversary of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s S.H.I.E.L.D. debut with an Omnibus collecting every Marvel comic released in May 1965, the month Nick Fury’s super-hero spy thriller debuted! It’s the next step in the evolution of the Marvel Universe, one that’s increasingly being taken over by innovative super heroes. Patsy Walker and Millie the Model are in the swinging sixties now. Over on the range Two-Gun Kid and Kid Colt are still shooting the place up, plus Western villain the Panther appears. Here is the beginning of Namor the Sub-Mariner in Tales to Astonish. Plus FF #41, Spidey #27, Avengers #18, Daredevil #9, and much more. Take a trip back in time and experience the whole of the Marvel Universe from an entire month! Marvel, 2025. ...More.

New Facsimile Editions

CAPTAIN MARVEL ADVENTURES 19 FACSIMILE EDITION
Highly Recommended. By CC Beck et al. Published by Fawcett Comics in 1943, one of the all-time great covers co-starring Mary Marvel and drawn by Marc Swayze — this features her 2nd appearance in a cross over story "The Training of Mary Marvel" with CM. She first appeared in CM #18. Also "CM and the Phantom of the Department Store," "CM and His Achilles Heel," "Battles the Ego Exchanger" plus backup story Captain Kid, text story, and a great war bonds ad, "Don't Miss Your Shot at the Axis." 64-page wartime issue....More.

CAPTAIN MARVEL ADVENTURES 22 FACSIMILE EDITION
Highly Recommended. By CC Beck et al. From 1943, a standout issue in the Golden Age of comics, featuring the beloved hero Captain Marvel and the very first chapter of "The Monster Society of Evil" starring Mr. Mind, which ran until issue #46! Plus "CM Battles the Shipyard Sabotage." "CM and the Voodoo Showboat," and "the Revolt of the Comics." This offbeat story parodies Tarzan, Little Orphan Annie and other comic stars, unhappy with "Dextros Q. Penn, World's Second Largest Publisher of Comics." It's a real dig on someone in the biz! Plus Captain Kidd and more extra features! An outstanding issue! Includes Comix Cards of Mr. Scarlet and Minute Man on the backcover....More.

Dave Stevens & The Rocketeer

ROCKETEER BREAKS FREE
Highly Recommended. Return to 1938 and the original timeline of Dave Stevens' beloved character. This perfectly captures the original feel of Dave's work, set in the pre-World War II era but the Nazis are already on hand to challenge our young hero and his lovely girlfriend Betty, as well as Peevy. Our trio drive to San Francisco for Betty's new film, and then it's non-stop adventure on the West Coast. A four-issue miniseries written by fan-favorite writer Stephen Mooney (Rocketeer: The Great Race, Half Past Danger) and drawn by Staz Johnson (Robin, Catwoman)! IDW, 2025....More.

BIG BIG OVERSTREET COMIC BOOK PRICE GUIDE 55th Edition
Highly Recommended. By Robert Overstreet. The oversized, limited-edition version. Preferred by many dealers and serious collectors, it features the complete data for all comic tiles: pricing, credits, first appearances...everything you'd find in the regular edition. But print size is bigger for easy reading, and the book opens out and lays flat for easier use. This does not include the special articles, ads, or other bonus features. Perfect for those comic book collectors, dealers and historians who are dealing with the all-important data—which is exactly what I do. I always buy both editions, one for the articles and features, the other for day-to-day use looking up all the information. - Bud. Square bound with larger print. Lady Luck cover by John K. OVERSTREET COMIC BOOK PRICE GUIDE 55th Edition Hardcover
Highly Recommended. By Robert Overstreet and Yolanda Ramirez. Over our five and a half decades of covering the comic book market, we've seen the top prices paid for comics go from hundreds of dollars to millions, but The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide itself has stood the test of time. In addition to updated prices, this edition includes all new feature articles, new market reports, and new inductees into The Overstreet Hall of Fame. As we celebrate the Guide's 55th anniversary, we also commemorate the 50th anniversary of Joe Kubert's iconic Tarzan cover for CBPG #5, one of the most celebrated covers in the Guide's long history, with a new interpretation of it by official Edgar Rice Burroughs artist Joe Jusko. No other variant editions have been announced for this year—these three are it for Overstreet this time. Although Diamond Comic Distributors remains in bankruptcy, with buyers nearly set to take over, this has had no apparent effect on the separate Gemstone Publishing which is a subsidiary of Diamond. Gemstone publishes the Price Guide. So we don’t expect any difficulties on getting the new edition this year.

Free Comic Book Day May 3

With Diamond Comic Distributors still in a state of flux, we found several of our Free Comic Book Day titles were cancelled. So here are the three titles we received, supplemented by our own warehouse find titles from as far back as the 1970s! We’re listing ten titles this week, and will list another ten, all vintage warehouse find titles, next week --just to spread out the fun. Enjoy!

Free with any order, add item to your cart or order form. Limited 3 free items per order, six over $50, just one copy of each title. Please select different titles, not multiple copies of the same title. Thanks for your support, and enjoy! If we run out, we’ll substitute a title of our choice.

Weird Science Taschen XXL - More Coming!

We quickly went through our initial stock of these, but rest assured that we have more on the way; they may be here by the time you read this. We did 100 signed bookplates, but we didn’t start with 100 copies. Some of the online EC group were confused when they found this temporarily out of stock, thinking we’d sold out the bookplates editions. But we have not; we still have about 65 copies of the bookplate to go.

The $650 deluxe edition [ECLWS01D] also sold faster than we expected but more are coming in of that also.

David Wright’s Carol Day

Once I saw a copy of the $250 edition, I rewrote our description based on my very high opinion of the book. It's extremely impressive, and the lower-priced $35 collection continues to go very well too, considering virtually no one (in the US anyway), ourselves included, knew the artist’s work! More copies are coming in of both editions.

Regular Soft Cover Edition

DAVID WRIGHT'S CAROL DAY: LANCE HALLAM Deluxe Edition
Limited, 500. 84 complete strips from from the original artwork, 1957. Front cover by Brian Bolland. Back cover by David Wright. Highly Recommended. Carol Day is a fashion model, elegant and assured in a world of intrigue, vividly brought to life in this much-acclaimed newspaper strip with multi-layered adult story lines and superbly detailed and atmospheric fine-line artwork. Created by artist David Wright, it was published in the Daily Mail. This handsome, deluxe, limited edition collects what many consider to be her best adventure sequence, the complete Lance Hallam story. Entirely from the original art in the large format full size of the originals!! Plus all kinds of bonus features, including full color pin-up art by Wright (which is what he's best known for). New on Sale

Just this week I reduced the price on this — it was very popular when published but slowed down since then, leaving us with a few too many copies. It's rare we discount artist’s editions since they usually sell out, and they cost us extra in shipping them in and then shipping them to you.

BILL WARD The Fantagraphics Studio Edition
Introduction by burlesque superstar Dita Von Teese. Recommended. Bill Ward‘s glamour girls were the staples of countless men’s and humor magazines, where they shared the pages with cult models like Bettie Page, Tina Louise, and Julie Newmar, and cartoons by fellow “good girl” artists such as Archie’s Dan Decarlo and Playboy’s Jack Cole. Imagine if you will, an innocent but stunning young woman boasting wildly exaggerated, Barbie-like proportions poured into a wisp of lingerie or clingy cocktail dress and adorned in diamond necklaces with opera-length gloves and high stiletto heels, and you’ve got the recipe for the quintessential Bill Ward glamour girl. News and Notes

Our friend and longtime associate Jack Katz, creator of the early graphic novel The First Kingdom, died on April 25, 2025, at the age of 97. As you may be aware, I (Bud) took over publishing Jack’s series from my Comics & Comix stores partway through the series, and I completed the 24-issue run that was published from 1974-86, at two issue each year. Stan Lee himself complained Jack took too much time with his work, so Stan kept Jack strictly as penciller in the 1950s Atlas horror comics.

I’ll be posting more about Jack next week and he’ll have a place with our other memorials on our home page bottom. Meanwhile, I refer you to this excellent overview of Jack’s career from ICV2 by Brigid Alverson, posted April 29.

First Kingdom #1 (First Printing)

First Kingdom #9

As the publisher of The First Kingdom, I set aside back issues back in the day, including a stock of the first printings of #1. Jack didn’t like the painted cover done by Larry Todd, which obscured Jack’s pencils…so for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th printings, we returned to Jack’s artwork and it was colored by Steve Oliff. That said, I still liked the painting by Larry!

First and reprint editions of #1, along with several other issues, are all still at reduced prices from $2.50 to $5. I will not raise the prices just because Jack is gone; he’d like as many people as possible to enjoy his work.

We also have just two copies of his signed portfolio left, published in 1982. These are my publisher file copies and come with a free copy of FK #1, first printing [FKPT, $175].
