COMIC BOOK APOCALYPSE! The Death of Pre-Code Comics and Why It Happened 1940-1955 Highly Recommended. By David J. Hogan. Introduction by Maggie Thompson. Comic Book Apocalypse! explores the controversial world of pre-code comics, through 500 examples of cover art, highlighting why some deemed the Code necessary! I love it...here are all the wildest, weirdest, raunchiest, raciest, most violent covers of the 1940s and 1950s comics, from EC Comics to Batman, Fighting Yank to Pep Comics, romance to Planet Comics and Space Adventure. The book also examines who decided what content was acceptable, demonstrating how pre-Code comics reflect the larger story of 1950s America. While compliance was technically voluntary, most publishers followed its strict rules. Those who didn’t faced ruin when wholesalers and distributors refused to handle non-compliant comics, returning them unopened to publishers, who soon self-destructed. Schiffer, 2025....More. CONAN The Tower of the Elephant Highly Recommended. Art by Valetin Sécher (Michael Moorcock’s Elric). Oversized hardcover with double-page paintings accompanied by the complete text of Robert E. Howard's novella, early in Conan's career. French artist Valentine Secher is outstanding here with the first adaptation in a new French series from Bragelonne Publishers. In the Maul district of Zamora, where bandits go to celebrate their crimes, a young barbarian with black hair, broad shoulders and powerful torso, hears a Kothian talking about the Tower of the Elephant. The thief tells him that it contains in its heights the Heart of the Elephant, a marvelous jewel that offers wealth and powers to the one who holds it. Without preparation, Conan the Cimmerian undertakes the ascent of this tower reputed to be impregnable, a journey that will test the body and mind of the barbarian in one of his earliest encounters with supernatural forces. This reminds me more of the H.P. Lovecraft illustrated novels, also from France, than of a graphic novel. It's really an illustrated version with the full prose story. Here’s more of the latest Conan releases. |

One of the longest Mars novels; including the 68 bonus pages with art and letters, this is 358 pages! I’m first to admit I have many editions of each of the ERB novels. The original G&D printings, Ballantine and Ace paperbacks, cool British editions with entirely new artwork. But these new editions are just too good to pass up and I’m adding each to my collection. I love the new Jusko covers as well as the 68 pages of bonus material in the back—all kinds of cool rare stuff I’ve never seen before. it’s enough to make any ERB fan happy and if you’ve never before read the adventure, well, what can you be waiting for. It’s the ultimate edition!—Bud. Click here or on the banner above for the previous volumes as well as the Tarzan series and more from ERB Inc. |

FRANK FRAZETTA FINE LINES Our Highest Recommendation. By Sara Frazetta and Arnie Fenner. Frazetta first achieved international prominence with his powerful covers for paperbacks featuring Tarzan, Howard's Conan, and The Death Dealer, but when asked how he was able to create such unforgettable paintings he replied simply, "Drawing is everything." Fine Lines helps to explain why he felt that way with a collection of his most exciting works in pencil, ink, and watercolor. Including many of his influential illustrations from the 1960s and '70s for the fiction of Edgar Rice Burroughs and J.R.R. Tolkien, this beautiful book also features nearly a dozen previously unpublished drawings along with historical essays sharing the stories behind the art. Compiled and edited by Frank's granddaughter Sara Frazetta in collaboration with 2-time World Fantasy Award winner Arnie Fenner, Fine Lines is a celebration of the magical imagination of the Godfather of Fantastic Art. Moderate nudity. Frazetta Girls, 2025. Mature Readers....More. Item Code: FRAFL Soft Cover, 8x12, 84pg, b&w $35.00 |
Just goes to show, no matter how many books on Frazetta are out there, there’s room for another good one. This is by Arnie Fenner, with cooperation from the Frazetta family. Arnie along with Cathy Fenner compiled and designed Legacy, Icon and Testament, which are THE three best Frazetta books. Maybe with the big $200 XXL Taschen volume a close 4th. Arnie always finds new material and puts together a fresh new perspective on whatever he works on (including the first 20 Spectrum volumes, lest we forget)! |

VIDEOTAPES FROM HELL Hurt Edited by Stephen Jones. Foreword by Joe Dante. A jubilant celebration of the greatest VHS cover art in all its gory glory, which inspired, scared, and delighted viewers. For anyone who frequented a video store in the '80s or '90s, the styles are instantly recognizable: surprisingly beautiful paintings of fanged and winged monsters; ridiculously lurid depictions of young men and women in peril; outsider art; absurdly overstuffed photo montages. Embodying the anything-goes ethos of an era when obscure, cheaply produced movies — usually with supernatural story lines and bottom-drawer special effects — could be distributed throughout the world and watched from the comfort of one’s living room. Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson’s Great Mystery and Adventure Series |
|
Jim Davidson with an introduction by Nicky Wheeler-Nicholson. I wanted badly to handle this, but it’s a Print on Demand book from Amazon. Our discount is almost non-existent, and once we pay shipping, we’d be losing money. Rather than up the price and risk making anyone unhappy, I’m reluctantly telling you it is available (choke, gasp) from Amazon. It's $65, oblong 11x8.5, 314 pages, collecting the major’s pre-Classics Comics adaptations of famous novels. I really like it. |
