HANK JANSON UNDER COVER A Visual History
Closeout Price! Import from England. Highly Recommended. In this full-color coffee-table art book, noted researcher Stephen James Walker presents a complete visual history of the Hank Janson crime fiction series, from its inception in 1946 through to the last of the original novels in 1971, and beyond. Reproductions of every single cover — including, in full-page size and in better quality than ever seen before, all of the classic Reginald Heade painted covers of the 1940s and 1950s, including his foreign editions. Good girls, bad girls...it's all about racy themes and sex appeal on these vintage covers: nudity, bondage, violence, cleavage... The equivalent U.S. series might be Mike Hammer or Michael Shayne — except Janson was far longer-lived! Telos, 2021....More.

Hard Cover, 9x11, 256pg, Full Color

A cool book by the best pin-up artist in England, Reginald Heade. See below for the Art of Reginald Heade.

MAC RABOY Master of the Comics
The first-ever book on this hugely talented artist. Our Highest Recommendation. By Roger Hill. Introduction by Roy Thomas. Beginning with his WPA etchings during the 1930s, Mac Raboy struggled to survive the Great Depression and eventually found his way into the comics. He perfected his art style on early stories of Dr. Voodoo, Zorro The Mystery Man, Bulletman, Spy Smasher, (all for Fawcett), The Green Lama and, finally, his crowning achievement, Captain Marvel Jr, Raboy went on to illustrate the Flash Gordon Sunday newspaper strip, and left behind a legacy of meticulous perfection. Through extensive research and interviews with son David Raboy, and with several of Mac Raboy's Golden Age assistants, author Roger Hill brings Mac Raboy, the man and the artist, into focus. TwoMorrows, 2019....More.

Hard Cover, 8x11, 160pg, Full Color

I love this book, but overbought a little on it. Roger Hill's fine look at Raboy, the first ever.

CARTOON ART OF MIKE DEODATO JR Signed
Signed! Publisher file copy from 2013, never before handled. Marvel star Mike Deodato, Jr. in a ten-year-old collection of his cartoon art that we never handled before. From the publisher files, delightful light-hearted cartoons by the veteran artist. A new side to his art, inspired by his family life, with a comics twist added in. The man who has worked for DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, and others now combines influences of Calvin & Hobbes, Will Eisner, and others — truly sensational for any Deodato fan! CREATURES FROM THE SUBCONSCIOUS Signed
Signed! Highly Recommended. Denis calls these his “chipboard” drawings. Drawn without pencil prelims or any aforethought, the spontaneous images are created on the unforgiving pulpy surface of chipboard, the stiff backer board on legal pads and similar. They occasionally remind us of R. Crumb's more surreal work and also of Basil Wolverton — high praise indeed. There's nothing normal here. These are all from another dimension of strange creatures, stranger settings, all with some kind of bizarre story behind them...but it's for you to figure out what the heck caused Denis to create each one. Demented? Oh, yes. Tinto Press, 2023....More.

TONY SARG Genius at Play
Highly Recommended. By Lenore D. Miller and Stephanie Plunkett. Tony Sarg (1880-1942) first achieved professional success as an illustrator in London and New York. His 1920s puppets directly inspired Jim Henson; he was also a pioneer in animated films and children’s books, and, as a longtime designer for Macy’s, he created the gigantic balloons used in the firm’s Thanksgiving Day Parade which began in 1924. He also employed one of his parade balloons in the famous Nantucket Sea Serpent hoax of 1937. Abbeville Press, 2023....More.

THE ART OF REGINALD HEADE Volume 2
Our Highest Recommendation, By Stephen James Walker and Steve Chibnall. Reginald Heade was an incredibly prolific artist, at the height of his career taking on as many as 100 commissions per year. THE LIBRARY OF ESOTERICA Plant Magick
Recommended. Edited by Jessica Hundley. A new release in this comprehensive series from Taschen. From root to vibrant blossom, Plant Magick uses artwork past and present to explore the fertile, interconnected history between plants and people, the multitude of ways in which we embrace plants in spiritual ceremony, as healing medicine, as creative muse and as gateways into deeper explorations of consciousness including marijuana and hallucinogenic posters and art. HIDETAKA TENJINS Artistry of Macross Volume 2
Recommended. Since its small screen debut in 1982, Macross has remained one of most influential anime films of all time. Longtime franchise illustrator Hidetaka Tenjin captures the high-flying action of the series' iconic "variable fighters" like no other artist through his hyper-realistic illustrations for model kits, magazines, promotional materials, and more. This second volume collects Tenjin's illustrations from the Macross Frontier films, Macross Delta TV series & films, and Walküre Launch, as well as an archive of his work on video games, novels, animation and more. FROM ANGELS TO WEREWOLVES
By Philip F. Palmedo. Alluring mermaids sighted by lonely mariners. Winged angels, by turns avenging and comforting. The fearsome Minotaur of Greek mythology. Animal-headed deities, from the elephant-headed Ganesha in India to the falcon-headed Horus in ancient Egypt. As far back as we go in human history, we find therianthropes, or animal-human hybrids. This thoughtful volume surveys each of the major categories of therianthrope in turn, from animal-headed beings to merpeople to shape-shifters, with particular attention to their roles in religion, folklore, and the popular consciousness. With well-chosen color illustrations, the author demonstrates how artists of all eras have shaped our conception of these mythical beings. Abbeville Publishing Group, 2023....More.

DARK MYSTERIES Volume 2 Hardcover
Collects #7-12, 1952-53. Recommended. Art by Harry Harrison, A. C. Hollingsworth, Hy Fleishman, Doug Wildey et al. Some of the weirdest and most esoteric stories and covers of the time. Skeletons, anyone? They loved them on every cover. And busty, Wally Wood-ish ladies—on the covers and inside, too. Dismemberment, hypo blood drainage, cannibalism, witch burning, severed heads...even a horror witch hostess clearly stolen from EC. And that's all noted in Overstreet! As shown on the cover here, artist Hy Fleishman was obviously influenced by Wood and he has plenty here. Also so does Hollingsworth, also a Woody clone. PS Artbooks, 2018....More.

FROM HERE TO INSANITY MAGAZINE Volume 1
Originally published in 1957. Recommended. Chock full of silly stories and artwork, mimicking the style of MAD Magazine. Steve Ditko contributes a humorous three-page tale about a homely crooner named Beverly Kaflin. Other contributors include Bill Ward's cover and two stories (signed Bob McCartney), Joe Pena, Bob Weber, and Basil Wolverton. Mad evolved from a comic book to a magazine, and the rest is history. Charlton was never one to see success without a stab at it, and this was their effort. With the next issue the title changed to Crazy, Man, Crazy and lasted two more issues. Lots of racy good-girl art, spoofs of movies and television, and all popular subjects of the day. PS Artbooks, 2025....More.

Known as the “Sentinel of Liberty,” he has frequently provided socio-political commentary on current events as well as inspiration and warnings concerning the future. Based on the 2008 Society of Illustrators' exhibit, "Artists Against the War", this draws from the history of graphic protest and demonstrates the many ways that illustrators — in comics, editorial cartoons, illustrations for magazine articles, and so on — have reflected on the representations and misrepresentations of war, specifically in Iraq and Afghanistan. 56 nationally-known contributors, an all-star list including Grossman, Arisman, Kuper, Sorel, Holland, Billout, Silverman, Tim O'Brien, Banyai et al. ILENE MEYER Paintings Drawings Perceptions
Publisher file copy. Highly Recommended. Edited by Cathy and Arnie Fenner. Ilene Meyer's oil paintings transport viewers through the mists of myths and creation to explore a unique world populated by fantastical creatures and imaginary landscapes — all rendered with clarity and passion. As surreal as Pablo Picasso or Salvador Dali, as evocative as Georgia O'Keeffe, this gallery introduces SF and New Age afficionados to the first full-scale celebration of Meyer's work. Invoking themes of ecology, conservation, culture, and lost civilizations, Meyer's paintings pronounce that all existence is interconnected and that all souls are intertwined. A cultural sensation in Japan and the subject of numerous articles, interviews and even a documentary film, Meyer enchants with her bold, painterly style. Designed and edited by Cathy Fenner and Arnie Fenner, the creators of the Spectrum series, this is the first collection of Ilene Meyer paintings to be published in the U.S. Underwood Books, 2004. ...More.

R/EVOLUTION THE ART OF JON FOSTER Hardcover
Recommended. Edited by Cathy and Arnie Fenner, and Irene Gallo. Jon Foster creates irresistibly dark demimondes populated by retro robots, Star Wars villains, and creepy goth-inspired creatures that recall the work of James Gurney (Dinotopia), Rick Berry, H. R. Giger, and past masters of the grotesque like Goya. Yet his work is inimitably his own, from the noirish lighting, off-kilter angles, and kinetic sense of movement to his singular technique of starting a project with oils and then scanning it into a computer to add more startling visual effects. FLASH GORDON CLASSIC COLLECTION The Complete Sunday Strips Volume 3 1941-1944 Hurt
Our Highest Recommendation. By Alex Raymond. Flash Gordon is right up there in the Hall of Fame category with Hal Foster's Prince Valiant. And in fact, they were being created at nearly the same time, making the Sunday Page section of newspapers across the country a must-read for youngsters, oldsters, and all the comic artists of the day, who were deeply influenced by Raymond's magnificent artwork and dramatic storytelling. THUN'DA KING OF THE CONGO Volume 1 Hardcover Hurt
Collects #2-6, 1952-53. Highly Recommended. By Bob Powell. First appearing in comics in 1952 and on film in Columbia Pictures serial "King of the Congo" starring Buster Crabbe, Thun'da was a fictional Tarzan-esque character scripted by Gardner Fox and originally created by artist Frank Frazetta! Thun'da was Roger Drum, a World War II United States Air Force officer who was shot down while flying over a lost civilization, deep in the heart of Africa. Bob Powell took over and did a superb job on #2 through #6, collected here — but Powell's fine work has always been in the shadow of Frazetta's work in issue #1. Powell's at his best here, with Thun'da and his voluptuous girl friend...it's as exciting as the work he did on Cave Girl, which is another under-appreciated title from the same publisher, Magazine Enterprises (ME).
