On my next trip to southern California, I will definitely be visiting George Lucas' Museum of Narrative Art. This beautiful two-volume set is both a guide and tribute to the spirit of Lucas' sprawling art gallery/museum, and features many of the pieces on display within its walls. From our ancient ancestors to the artists, writers and filmmakers of today, our species has always been storytellers. Whether decorating cave walls, relating tales around a fire, or publishing works, we communicate to our fellow man via stories. This book set is the story of how we became storytellers and the power of the images we create to bring those stories to life. ~Marty |

Setting aside the topic of Jar-Jar Binks and his role in galactic history, many now look back at The Phantom Menace, the first Episode in the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, with a greater appreciation for the film. A massive hit upon its initial release, Episode I was also met with some fan backlash. But, as I said before, years later, an older, wiser Star Wars fandom sees things with a different eye, and an appreciation for the massive amount of world-building undertaken by creator George Lucas and his team, and the perfomances from all the leads and supporting cast (except Jar-Jar). This latest release in Insight Editions' great "Making of Star Wars" series is a big, deeply layered look at Lucas' return to the Galaxy Far, Far Away, set in a longer time ago altogether, and is essential reading for true fans of the saga! ~Marty |

First and foremost, this is just such a fantastic collection of stories from the pages of EC Comics' Tales from the Crypt! From issues #20-46 to be exact. But you might be asking, "Marty, where the heck are issues #1-19?!" No doubt there are plenty of you out there who know the answer to that question. But for the few, uninitiated out there who don't, here's the gruesome details of why there isn't a previous volume to this collection. As it sometimes happened in comics, the legendary Tales from the Crypt began its life in 1948 under a very different title. FOUR different titles actually—until finally becoming EC's most famous title in October 1950. They were: Which brought us to 1950's Tales from the Crypt #20 (thru #46) after one final title change. And the rest, they say, is history. SQUA TRONT! ~Marty |

I can recall purchasing an issue of Marvel's Vampire Tales (and Tales of the Zombie) while on vacation with my family in Northern California's Redwoods National Park. Like Creepy and Eerie, Vampire Tales was a black & white anthology that was probably meant for an older version of me at the time, but I was a sophisticated 11-year-old with a taste for horror comics, and these felt more familiar to me anyway thanks to the various Marvel characters involved. I'm surprised it has taken someone this long to reprint this material altogether, as only certain stories have been collected by Marvel themselves over the years in various trade paperbacks and omnibus editions. It's great stuff, with some very talented Marvel creators working outside the Comics Code on more or less adult monster comics. My hat's off to the folks at Dark Horse for bringing this classic '70s material back from the grave! ~Marty |
