Pop Surf Culture: Music, Design, Film and Fashion from the Bohemian Surf Era By Brian Chidester & Domenic Priore. From the original beachcomber personalities like the Waikiki Beach boys of the early 20th century, to the postwar rise of southern California as a creative epicenter for music, art, and film, Pop Surf Culture traces the roots of the surf boom from its earliest days as an insular, regional Hawaiian subculture, to its proliferation nationwide in mainstream teen fads and entertainment. Criss-crossing through the 1950s Beat Generation, 1960s counterculture, 1970s punk rock, the book illustrates why surf culture is a vital art movement of the 20th century. Fantagraphics, 2026. Cryptology #12 Steve Ditko's Tales of Terror! This issue of Cryptology features an in-depth look at the horror and supernatural stories of Spider-Man legend, Steve Ditko, who created hundreds of terror tales over the years at Atlas, Marvel, Charlton, and Warren! Next, Cryptology begins their two-part celebration of 1944’s House of Frankenstein, the penultimate release in the Universal Monsters film series and the first to feature Glenn Strange in the boots of Frankenstein's Monster! Plus, Horror's leading ladies, Charles Addams, more pre-Code horror comics, Hammer horror treasures, and other forgotten terrors from the past! TwoMorrows Publishing, 2026. Item Code: CRY12 Magazine, 8.5X11, 80 pg, Full Color |
|
Yet another fantastic issue of Cryptology has arrived from our pals at TwoMorrows! And leading off the issue is a cover feature on the moody and atmospheric terror tales produced by Spider-Man co-creator, Steve Ditko! While at Atlas/Marvel and Charlton, Ditko was a regular nightmare factory, creating countless tales of horror and the supernatural, all in his own unique comics style. Finding one of his stories in the various Charlton horror comics I collect is a real treat, and this issue celebrates Steve's non-hero work with all the praise it deserves! And on top of all that, this issue is just jam-packed with great material for every kind of horror fan. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Cryptology is hands-down my favorite horror mag out there! Be like me and never miss an issue! ~Marty |
