DC Comics has been absolutely killing it (pun intended) over the past year and a half with their new "Absolute Universe" series. These are DC's greatest heroes, stripped down to their basic elements, free of decades of back-story and continuity, and reforged for a new era. Both Absolute Superman and Green Lantern series have been well-received, and are taking these new incarnations of our classic heroes to new places and situations. It's a whole new world, with a new spin on familiar figures we have know for years. I'm hooked. ~Marty

As stated previously, Jack Kirby is my favorite comics artist, being the first creator whose work struck a chord with my young self and set me on course for a lifetime chasing the dream. So many of the comics I collected and enjoyed featured covers and interiors by Jack, and you knew that you were guaranteed a good time when you saw his art on the spinner rack. Dark Horse, under license with Marvel, presents this second collection of classic Kirby covers... just one great image after another, from some of his finest moments of the mid-'60s. Needless to say, I highly recommend this one! ~Marty

Stephen Bissette has been a favorite artist of mine for many years. His gritty, scratchy lines and claustrophobic inkwork lending itself to many great horror stories and to DC's Swamp Thing. His work on Tyrant is some of his best. A fanciful tale of a Tyrannosaurus Rex from birth to adulthood was a favorite for Bissette, but it remains "unfinished" to this day. While the four published issues form a cohesive story arc, Bissette obviously had more planned, but circumstances within the industry decided the series' fate for him. What we do get here is Steve's complete vision as published, all shot from his original art and printed at 1/1 scale. It's a massive tribute to one creator's passion project, filled with plenty of bonus materials and rare art. Not to be missed! ~Marty

A BRUSH, WITH HISTORY: The Illustrative Art of Sandy Plunkett Signed
Signed! By Sandy Plunkett. This museum catalogue is a selection of pieces from the 2025 exhibition of Sandy Plunkett's work held by The Southwest Ohio History Center. In the 35 years that Plunkett has been located in Ohio, he has, if unintentionally, created a visual chronicle of the many non-profits, small businesses, local bands and political scandals that have come and gone from his corner of the Appalachian foothills. Each image is accompanied with anecdotal accounts of the why and wherefore behind each commission, with a peek into his process. To many who know Plunkett primarily through his work in the comic book field, this is a chance to become more familiar with the other side of his artistic career. Sandy Plunkett is no stranger to comics fans, having illustrated comics for DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, IDW, and many more. What most of us were unaware of was his side gigs, doing illustrations, logos and more in his local community of Athens, Ohio. Plunkett, working with the Southwest Ohio History Center, was recently the subject of an exhibit of his local artworks, and this volume acts as a catalog for the event. It's filled with plenty of whimsical and wonderful images, most in full-color. If you're a fan, you should definitely check out this collection! ~Marty

In the early '70s, seeking out the local drugstore's comic book spinner rack was a favorite weekly adventure of mine. And many of the titles I was collecting had one thing in common, besides their sci-fi, horror and monster themes: Gil Kane covers! Kane's art was filled with a kinetic energy unlike any other. Even a prone body, their knees drawn up, arms draped to their sides, crackled with knockdown energy. These images often promised more than the interiors were prepared to deliver, but they looked damn cool anyway! This is another great Marvel collection from Fantagraphics, whose ongoing Marvel and Atlas collected editions are currently among my very favorites! ~Marty

I've been an Ultraman fan since the late '60s, when the show made its debut on our shores. I would run home from school every day to watch Ultraman on KTXL Channel 40's "Captain Mitch" afternoon show. I loved it's Godzilla-style monster action and the exploits of the badly dubbed members of the Science Patrol. I still collect Ultraman toys and videos to this day, and was pleasantly surprised when Marvel teamed up with Tsuburaya Productions to bring Ultraman to the Marvel Universe. Not since 1977's Marvel/Toho Godzilla collaboration was I this excited for a comic. If you're of a certain age (I know there's a lot of us out there), then this Omnibus should provide some nostalgic moments and new thrills. ~Marty

WILL EISNER’S HAWKS OF THE SEAS

THE ART OF WILL EISNER

OUTER SPACE SPIRIT 1952

Hi, everyone. Bud here, I’m back from San Diego Comic-Con with my cool Eisner Award (see the pic)!

I've got a shameless tie-in this week... here's a whole bunch of excellent rare books by our maestro Will Eisner. Obscure tidbit: Phil Seuling and I co-published The Spirit Coloring Book with Will back in 1980. (It was Phil’s idea.) How did it sell? Don’t ask! But I don’t have any at the moment, so I would say it sold out… eventually!

...and that’s just a sampling of the vintage Eisner books we have on hand! And surprise: I’ve repriced a number of these below the listed prices. Take a look! And don't forget our Free Shipping promotion for orders over $50, which runs until August 2nd!
