This earlier release above, The Art of Jose Gonzalez, has quite honestly been one of our bestsellers since the moment it appeared. His ability to draw the female form, and his long tenure with Vampirella, have made him THE artist most identified with her. FYI, we hope that we are able to keep this new Art Edition available for some time but these "Artist Archives" editions have been known to sell out without warning. Be aware. |

FIGURE DRAWING FOR ARTISTS -- Highly Recommended by Bill Stout. Recommended. By Steve Huston. Though there are many books on drawing the human figure, none teach how to draw a figure from the first few marks of the quick sketch to the final stroke of the finished masterpiece, let alone through a convincing, easy-to-understand method. Award-winning fine artist Steve Huston shows beginners and pros alike the two foundational concepts behind the greatest masterpieces in art and how to use them as the basis for their own success. Aliens, Monsters, and Madmen: The Art of EC Comics This is a WONDERFUL exhibit of original EC artwork, open through July 10th at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene, Oregon. Anne and I spent several hours there in mid-May, and we loved it. And Anne's not even that much of a comics fan! There is something for everyone there, with excellent essays accompanying the exhibited material. You will find the largest display ever of EC Original Art. There are many complete stories on display, classics like "Food for Thought" by Williamson and Krenkel, and "Judgement Day," the story about bigotry by Joe Orlando. There are EC covers by Frank Frazetta (Weird Science Fantasy #29), Al Williamson & Frazetta (Weird Science #21), Al Feldstein, George Evans, Harvey Kurtzman, Jack Davis...you name the artist, they are represented. And cover roughs and page roughs by Kurtzman and others. A complete sub-section looks at Mad, with several complete stories and rare early cover art. There's also the original artwork for the EC Fan-Addict Membership Card, which I'd never seen before; 1950s cartoon portraits of the EC artists by Marie Severin, a running video of the 1950s comics witchhunt and Bill Gaines. It's well worth a trip to see. Artwork is on loan from Heritage Auctions, Grant Geissman, Roger Price, Glenn Bray and Robert L. Reiner. |
The University of Oregon offers Comic Studies programs and a minor in comics/graphic novels. There is a one-hour panel discussion with several of above-mentioned collectors, along with curator, English Department Professor Ben Saunders. We can all thank him for this amazing exhibit. See it on YouTube. And here is a link to the Museum Site. Besides more details, you can order all of the show flyers (about six) and an original poster, which are all pretty cool. At the show the poster is $10 and the other flyers and smaller posters are free. |
