Frankenstein

IT'S ALIVE! A VISUAL HISTORY OF FRANKENSTEIN
By Elizabeth Campbell Denlinger. This book shows how Mary Shelley created a monster. Commemorating the two-hundredth anniversary of Frankenstein, it traces the origins and impact of her novel -- a classic of world literature, a masterpiece of horror, and a forerunner of science fiction. Shelley conceived the archetype of the mad scientist who dares to flout the laws of nature. She devised a conflicted creature, eloquent and repulsive, torn between good and evil. In the movies he can be a brute pure and simple, yet he is still an object of compassion and remains a favorite on stage and screen. New York Public Library, 2018...More.

PS Artbooks has collected Dick Briefer's entire comic book series that ran from 1945 to 1954, complete now in Volumes 3-8. The first two were skipped so far, because of the difficulty in finding his first appearances in Prize Comics. But stay tuned! The available collections cover both the early humorous appearances and the horror run, which began with issue #18. All are deeply discounted while our supply lasts, many in the deluxe slipcased format, for as little as $21.95.

We also have renditions of Frankenstein by Guido Crepax, Mike Mignola, Gris Grimley, Frankenstein Alive by Wrightson, and the original Classics Illustrated. And currently we have two copies of Berni Wrightson's very first illustrated Frankenstein in Rare and Out of Print books.

MARILYN Lost Images from the Hollywood Photo Archive
By Boze Hadleigh. From the beginning of her modeling career in 1944 as Norma Jeane Mortensen to her death as the voluptuous Hollywood icon in 1962, Marilyn Monroe posed for thousands of modeling and publicity photos, scores of which have long been forgotten or abandoned in neglected studio archives. This book collects 100 of the rarest of the rare, seldom previously seen images of her brief modeling career, early days on the 20th Century Fox lot, then in candids between scene takes and traveling as a public figure as the wife of Arthur Miller and Joe DiMaggio. For the Monroe fans who think that they have seen it all, this book will provide a new lens on a beloved American icon. Lyons, 2018...More.

WALT DISNEY'S NINE OLD MEN Masters of Animation

Celebrate the legacy of Disney's core group of animators, with Walt Disney's Nine Old Men: Masters of Animation, featuring original sketches from classic films such as Pinocchio, Bambi, and Peter Pan—including an exclusive look at the animators' lives, with personal caricatures and fine artwork. In the mid-1930s, President Franklin D. Roosevelt coined the term “Nine Old Men” to describe the nine justices of the Supreme Court, who had seemingly lost touch with the ever-changing times. In jest, Walt Disney borrowed the term several years later to refer to his core team of animators—Les Clark, Marc Davis, Ollie Johnston, Milt Kahl, Ward Kimball, Eric Larson, John Lounsbery, Wolfgang Reitherman, and Frank Thomas—even though they were neither old nor out of touch, and in fact would together make history with their cutting-edge contributions to the world of animation. Pulp History & Pulp Art

BLOOD 'N' THUNDER PRESENTS 1 Pride of the Pulps
Edited by Ed Hulse. During the pulp era--roughly the first five decades of the 20th century--more than one thousand all-fiction magazines reached the nation's newsstands, if only for a single issue. Of that number, just a couple dozen attained any reputation for literary quality, and fewer than half that many regularly published stories considered to be on a par with those accepted by the prestigious “slick” magazines. The top periodicals in the field--Adventure, Argosy, Blue Book, Short Stories, The Popular Magazine, and a few others--were edited and packaged with loving care and consistently reflected the best that rough-paper magazines had to offer. Murania, 2017...More.

BLOOD 'N' THUNDER PRESENTS 2 The Penny-a-Word Brigade
Pulp Fictioneers Discuss Their Craft. Edited by Ed Hulse. Return with us to those halcyon days of yesteryear, when writers of pulp fiction made a precarious living--sweating out plot details, trying to make their hackneyed characters seem fresh, working insane hours, often typing until their fingers bled. And usually for just a penny a word. In this collection of articles from vintage writer's magazines, those journeymen scribes explain how—and why—they did it. Represented in these pages are pulp fiction's leading lights: Lester Dent, Frank Gruber, Frederick Davis, H. Bedford-Jones, Erle Stanley Gardner, and many more. The tips they presented to aspiring fiction writers are, for the most part, still applicable today. And they make fascinating reading, bringing back to life a long-gone phase of American popular culture. Murania Press, 2017...More.

Their lengthy, informative essays are profusely illustrated with pulp and book covers, interior artwork, rare photographs, and movie posters. And the works herein are new to this volume, not culled from back issues of Blood 'N' Thunder. Muriania Press, 2018...More.

Just Arrived 2019 Calendars

GUSTAVE DORE 2019 Calendar
Highly Recommended. The intricate engravings of Gustav Doré earned him great success during the Victorian era, and are still respected today for their unique style and skilful vision. But they all started out as paintings, as vividly displayed here with original artworks from the recent book and exhibition, the finest ever compiled on his career and work. Displaying Doré's immensely evocative illustrations for poems by Tennyson, Dante, Coleridge and Milton, as well as scenes from the Bible, this wall calendar is a true treat and the first of its kind. Flame Tree, 2018...More.

Item Code: GD19

I especially like this, based on the recent book of original Dore paintings. It's a pleasure to see his work before it was “interpreted” in wood or steel engravings.

We also have covers from early Sensation Comics, #23 and 28. They even offered seasonal covers, and these are some of the most eye-catching and fun as WW and her DC buddies dress in Santa costumes or do summertime activities. With the recent Gale Gadot film, these issues have shot up in value and deservedly so. They are very cool, and you can see some of the best here for all of next year. Asgard, 2018...More.

News and Notes

We just wrapped up the Seattle Antiquarian Book Fair and are on the way home, via a layover in Portland. So I was unable to review the new releases this week. I’ll put my personal stamp on the descriptions and recommendations next week. Hope to see some of you at the local Sac-Con this Sunday, October 21, in Sacramento, California. Then no more shows until Oakland and Pasadena in mid-February.

I picked up a run of Illustration Magazine #1-50 If you are looking for any out of print issues, contact Todd with your wants (todd@budsartbooks.com). You can score any before we put them on the website. Also picked up the first sixteen Complete Dick Tracy volumes, many of which we now only offer as special order items. And a complete set of Will Eisner’s The Spirit in hardcover—which I will offer first as a complete set.

Bill Schelly is the award-winning author of Harvey Kurtzman: The Man Who Created Mad; John Stanley:  Giving Life to Little Lulu; Sense of Wonder: My Life in Comics Fandom; Otto Binder: The Life and Work of a Comic Book Visionary and many other books, as well as a co-editor with Roy Thomas on Alter Ego magazine.

Bill published many of his early books under his own imprint, Hamster Press. He wants to get his remaining inventory out to more people, so we picked up several of his books to offer at new discount prices, including The Golden Age of Comics Fandom, Founders of Comics Fandom, and The Best of Star Studded Comics. He also generously signed a bunch of them. I’ll get them here in the email in the next two weeks or so—now on sale.
