7. REED CRANDALL ILLUSTRATOR OF THE COMICS Signed
Signed extra-illustrated full color 7x10 bookplate! Now in softcover. Our Highest Recommendation. By Roger Hill. The special bookplate features a painting never before reproduced in full color featuring John Carter, Dejah Thoris & friends, and Tars Tarkas going into battle (nudity). From the 1940s to the '70s, Reed Crandall brought a unique and masterful style to American comic art. Using an illustrator's approach on everything he touched, Crandall gained a reputation as the "artist's artist" through his skillful interpretations of Golden Age super-heroes Doll Man, The Ray, Firebrand, and Blackhawk (his signature character); horror and sci-fi for the legendary EC Comics line; Warren Publishing's Creepy, Eerie, and Blazing Combat; THUNDER Agents and Edgar Rice Burroughs characters; and even Flash Gordon for King Features. TwoMorrows, 2021. More

I love this book--Crandall has always been one of my very favorite illustrators. Which is why we printed a killer bookplate to go with it.

And Zoe Mozert, one of the "big four" names in pin-up, as prolific and famous in her day as contemporaries Rolf Armstrong, Earl Moran, and Gil Elvgren. Numerous examples of original artwork as well as rare tear sheets and photographs. Plus a look at Doc Savage model Steve Holland, by the author of the new book on him; Robert Osonitsch, The Illustrator's Photographer; and 1950s and 60s automotive specialists, Art Fitzpatrick and Van Kaufman. We dabbled a bit with these Zenescope special issues, and they've occasionally done quite well. Normally we don't offer lower priced comics, but we make an exception every so often.

11. THE ART OF ENRIC Hardcover
Oversized. Highly Recommended. A long-overdue, career retrospective of Enric Torres-Prat, long a favorite among comics and illustration fans, most of whom were introduced to Enric by the incredible paintings that he created for Warren Publishing, especially his breathtaking Vampirella magazine covers. With a career spanning over 50 years, Enric has appeared in comics, art galleries, magazines, and paperbacks. While equally at home with horror, science fiction, westerns, and more, he is most revered for his unmatched skills at rendering the female form. FPG, 2021. Due: Dec. More

Item Code: ARTEH

14. AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS
Oversized hardcover with exquisite artwork. Our Highest Recommendation. By H.P. Lovecraft. Art by François Baranger. Following up his stunning illustrated Call of Cthulhu, Baranger is back with a matching volume in what we hope will be a continuing series! Acclaimed for his work as a concept designer for cinema and video games, he has performed the incredible task of re-imagining one of H.P. Lovecraft's most classic and horrific tales into visual art -- Landscapes of frozen wastes, unspeakable creatures millions of years old found in an abnormal state of preservation, strange geometric structures at the top of black mountains. Words cannot do the visuals justice. It is a book with images to pour over. Design Studio Press, 2020. More

15. THE ART OF SAUL TEPPER
Almost Gone! Limited, 900. Highly Recommended. By Daniel Zimmer. Saul Tepper (1899-1987) was a life member of the Society of Illustrators and was elected to its Hall of Fame in 1980. His work is most closely compared to that of Dean Cornwell, and he worked for all the same popular, nationally selling magazines as Cornwell. He eventually did an almost equal proportion of fiction and advertising assignments, for both magazines and for many national accounts, such as Mobil Oil, Texaco, Packard, General Motors and Coca-Cola. This is the first-ever collection of his work. Tepper began his career working with Albert Dorne, studied under Harvey Dunn and, like Dunn, went on to teach after a long and successful career. Illustrated Press, 2020. Out of print. More

Item Code: ARTSTH
HC, 9x12, 224pg, FC
$44.95

Highly Recommended. By Colin Larkin. An affectionate and thoroughly-researched celebration of the classic Pan Books paperbacks, beautifully illustrated with sumptuous full-color reproductions of over 300 of the original cover paintings! From Robert Heinlein classics to Edgar Rice Burroughs, Agatha Christie mysteries to pulp fiction and cheesecake, and lots of it, Pan has always commissioned their own art for their often-iconic paperback covers. Here's that art, and the story behind the company. Telos, 2020. More

Item Code: COVMH
HC, 9x11, 264pg, FC

This was a pleasant surprise; it sold nearly as well as the Art of Reginald Heade, from the same British publisher. I'm not the only one who loves vintage paperback art!

18. SENSUAL GODDESS PLAYING CARDS #2
Recommended. By Frederick Potter. Many card games are played with two decks. People who purchased the Sensual Goddess Playing Cards, volume one, said that they liked the images but wished we had two decks with the exact same card backs but different images so that they could be used together. So...52 all new images that have been three years in the making, and are they hot and explicit and voluptuous? Oh, yes indeed. Lots of costumes, cosplay-style scenes but sans clothes for the most part... Full nudity. Sensual Goddess, 2020. Mature Viewers. More

Item Code: SENPC02
55 cards, 3x4, FC
$9.95
Nude ladies on playing cards…the tradition goes back, what, 80 years? Fun.

19. THE ART OF PULP FICTION An Illustrated History of Vintage Paperbacks
Our Highest Recommendation. Edited by Ed Hulse, with Will Murray, Gary Lovisi and David Saunders. Wow, this looks even better than I could have imagined. Finally, THE book on vintage paperback art -- a visual feast of great artwork! -Bud. From 1940 to 1970, paperbacks eclipsed pulp magazines and hardbound books as the most popular delivery vehicle for escapist fiction. And it was all about the cover art. To catch the eyes of potential buyers they were adorned with covers that were invariably vibrant, frequently garish, and often lurid.IDW, 2021. More

Item Code: ARTPFH
HC, 10x11, 240pg, Text/PC
$49.99 $39.99
A new release in the "Art of Pulp" series. Beautifully done, packed with obscure, steamy and fascinating art.

20. SEX AND HORROR Vol 4
Recommended. Here is the 1960s and '70s publishing phenomenon known as "fumetti sexy"--Italian adult comics with a unique take on such genres as horror, crime, fantasy, history and fairy tales. Wilder and weirder than you can imagine, sometimes quite explicit, some of the most outrageous and shocking comics ever produced and hugely successful, due in part to their uninhibited mix of twisted humor, gory violence, and up-front eroticism; however, what makes them so sought-after today is their technicolor cover illustrations, rendered by classically trained painters. Korero Press, 2021. Mature readers. More

Item Code: SEHOR
SC, 9x10, 160pg, FC
$36.95 $32.95
The latest in this series collecting cover and interior art from these very strange Italian magazines. See others here.

Adult Titles:
#1 was Wally Wood’s Cons de Fee: The Erotic Art of Wally Wood [CONSDH. $49.95 $39.95], new printing.

#2 Half Century of Nudes – This sale book is from 2000 but it just goes on selling and selling. I think we may be the only source [HALFCH. $57.50 $19.95].

#3 Betty: The Incomparable Bettie Page/Archives of Irving Klaw [BETINH. $59.95 $29.95]. Another Sale Book. This was closely followed by The Early Photographs of Bettie Page [EARP. $19.99 $14.99] and Betty Goes Wild! An Anthology of Classic Fetish & Glamour Photography [BETGW. $22.95]. I thought interest in Bettie had fallen off a bit, but new collections and sale prices led to new interest.

Our bestselling adult calendars were
XXXplicit Babes Nude from the Mystique folks [XXBN22. $19.95], Mystique Exposed [MY22. $19.95]. Next up is Hot Naked Girls 2022, but that’s sold out. I’ve reordered these other two to try and keep them available for at least January.

Our best-selling non-adult calendar was
Fantasy Art of Frazetta
[FRAZ22. $14.99]

Supplies and Miscellaneous
Paperback Plastic Bags
[PB. $6.95] once again leads the pack, followed by 10 inch Fold-On Dust Jacket Covers [JAF10. $9.50], 12 inch [JAF12. $9.95].

Our most popular Free Comic Book Day titles were Man Thing (vintage) and Vampirella #1, both gone now.

Dollar Ranking
We rank each year by units sold. However, that artificially eliminates most high-ticket items. So if we ranked ONLY by dollars of sales, our top five items in 2021 would be one of those below. Spectrum would come in #6.

#1 Tarzan of the Apes Deluxe (sold out, but you can still pre-order the next book, At the Earth’s Core [ATEAD. $299.99]

#2 EC Covers Artist Edition – This was first announced at least two years ago, but hey, it finally came out and is GREAT! [ECCAEH. $150].

#3 Masterpieces of Fantasy Art – This only beat out History of EC below because History first came out in 2019 [MASFH. $200/$180].

#4 The History of EC Comics Signed – this was a 2019 Bestseller, we sold 150+ that year, but it just KEPT selling into this year. One of our most popular books ever, and Highest Recommendation [HISECH. $200]. It is probably out of print finally, but we still have copies on hand, we stocked up.

#5 Moebius: Alla Ricera Del Tempo – for an art book that came out VERY late in 2021, this has done very well. And it’s in French, too [MOEBLH. $90]. It could sell out anytime, since it’s an import.

News & Notes

Diane Still Retires from Bud Plant

A great many of you know Diane from talking on the phone to her; she’s been our primary customer service person here for 24 years. She handled your emails, took calls, input mail-in orders, fixed problems and much, much more.

Diane’s worked well past normal retirement age for most people (she’s the same age as I am) but she’s finally moving on. She wants to spend more time with her husband Ken, her kids and grandkids, and keeping up on several acres of property. We loved having her here and she was always a pleasure to work alongside. I know many of you have a good relationship with her. If you want to send any cards or emails, I’ll be happy to pass them on. Use bud@budplant.com.

LaDonna and Todd will be filling in--we’re interviewing for a new person right now.

2022 Calendars

These are now Discontinued or out of print. But we have tried to keep as many as possible in stock for sales well into January and perhaps February, for your last minute orders. Sold out will no longer show up on our website. All are listed in our latest Winter 2021-22 catalog.

Snow Daze continued

The roads are dug out here, but two of us are still waiting for the power to get back up after nine days, as I write this. We’re packing and shipping as fast as we can. Todd and Karena got 150 packages out today, January 4th, which is damn close to a record. We may be caught up by Thursday, Jan 6—however, next we have a backlog of backorders to ship out, including advance orders for the Spectrum Quarterly #1 that we didn’t get out before the storm. So please be patient as we catch up after losing nearly a week to weather and power outages.

Illustrated Press News

Dan Zimmer’s next two releases will be new editions of two of his best-selling books: Haddon Sundblom and Dean Cornwell. We’ll get them announced soon. Meanwhile, declared out of print are The Art of Saul Tepper [ARTSTH. $44.95] and his latest release, The Art of Herbert Paus [ARTHPH. $44.95]. Don’t worry, we have plenty of copies of both for now. Also please note several recent issues of Illustration Magazine have quickly gone out of print, so I advise you to keep on top of these so you don’t miss any. The pin-up artist issues are often the quickest to sell out.

Watch for our new catalog, print copies began arriving this week, with Spectrum Quarterly/Dan dos Santos cover. Or download it here, now!
