ANY GUN CAN PLAY The Essential Guide to Euro-Westerns
New edition. Highly Recommened. By Kevin Grant. Foreword by Franco Nero. The full, vibrant history of the Euro-Western. The success of Sergio Leone's Man with No Name trilogy in the 60s sparked a gold rush, as a legion of European film-makers, many of them sharing the get-rich-quick mentality of Leone's mercenary anti-heroes, created the wildest Westerns ever made. Cynical and stylish, bloody and baroque, Euro-Westerns replaced straight-shooting sheriffs and courageous cowboys with amoral adventurers, whose murderous methods would shock the heroes of Hollywood Westerns. FAB Press, 2022....More.

Collects When in Rome #1-6 and Batman: Dark Victory #13, 2000, 2005. Recommended. By Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. For the third part of their Long Halloween trilogy, these two fine creators focused on Batman's most compelling sometimes-enemy, sometimes-ally, full-time love. This takes place within the events of Dark Victory, detailing Selina Kyle's mysterious trip to Italy, her dealings with the deadly Falcone crime family, and her attempt to uncover information about her long-lost parents. As Selina's Roman Holiday unfolds over the span of a week, she encounters the Riddler, Scarecrow, and even Wonder Woman's nemesis, the Cheetah. Stylish, sexy bad-girl artwork. Brilliant stuff! What Fred doesn't know is that Substance D gradually splits the user's brain into two distinct, combative entities, and that he is, in fact, in frantic pursuit of himself. TOPS The Complete Collection of Charles Biro's Visionary 1949 Comic Book Series
Collects Tops #1-2, 1949. Our Highest Recommendation. Edited by Michael Gilbert. The extremely rare, oversized experimental comic created by Charles Biro and Lev Gleason Publishing. Some of the best craftsmen working in comics at that time drew these pulpy, sexy, and melodramatic stories: Dan Barry, George Tuska, and others. It includes two stunning pre-EC crime tales illustrated by Reed Crandall, reminiscent of his Crime SuspenStories work. Introduction by the editor, historian and cartoonist Michael T. Gilbert, as well as several other essays providing background on the creation of the series and the publisher, editors, and cartoonists who realized it. Fantagraphics, 2022. Due: Apr. ...More.

This new collection includes the two original 1940s Mr. Monster stories plus the earlier Doc Stearne stories and covers, all by creator Fred Kelly. MICHAEL T. GILBERT'S THE COMPLETE WRAITH! Signed
Signed full color Mr. Monster Bookplate. Highly Recommended. The Wraith was a cult classic during the early days of indie comics in the 1970s, and a training ground for Michael T. Gilbert's later work on Elric and Mr. Monster. Created as spoof of Will Eisner's Spirit, Wraith fans included Eisner himself. He wrote "The Wraith has a lot of originality. Your style and approach are very vigorous!" The Wraith appeared in all six issues of Star*Reach's Quack! Here is every story, scanned from the original art, plus a wealth of unpublished art and photos, and an intro by Mr. Monster himself! Gilbert's commentary provides a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the 1970s comic book scene. Clover Press, 2020....More.

New printing. Our Highest Recommendation. Collects Amazing Fantasy #15, Amazing Spider-Man #1-38, Annual #1-2 & more, 1961-64. In 1962, in the pages of a series slated for cancellation, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created one of the most enduring icons in American popular media: the amazing Spider-Man! News & Notes

Underwood Books File Copies, Take Two

Tim Underwood has lived here in Grass Valley for a couple decades now. You may remember we made a huge deal with him for his publisher file copies a few years ago; we still have a handful of Frazetta Deluxe Editions, Ilene Meyer, back numbers of Spectrum and so on. You can see them here.

Tim is moving down to the San Francisco area and he and I cleared out the very last of the books he had put aside up here. Some nice surprises include deluxe editions of Jon Foster and John Jude Palencar, some signed Jack Vance and Robert Silverberg editions, a Philip K. Dick collection, a few signed deluxe Repent Harlequin by Harlan Ellison, some previously sold out Spectrums, Deluxe Editions of Balook by Piers Anthony and Patrick Woodroffe, trade editions of Comic Book Rebels, Frazetta Icon softcovers and Legacy hardcovers…

As we did last time, we'll price these reasonably since we have multiple copies of most titles; cases of a few. Tim also had a few items from other publishers, dating back to the 1970s… For single copies like this, contact Anne and see our other website budplantandhutchisonbooks.com.

Book Fairs & Rare Books

The Sacramento Book Show is this weekend. We hope to see some of you there.

Coming up in May will be a small but intimate Edgar Rice Burroughs show in Folsom, Calif, May 12-15. We'll have a large space. Details to follow…

We'll be at Rose City Book Show in Portland Oregon in June 17-18.

My partner Anne just sent out her once-a-month email of new arrivals for our sister business, Bud Plant and Hutchison books. Click here to see our new landing page to learn more.
