JOHN SEVERIN TWO-FISTED COMIC BOOK ARTIST Signed
Our Highest Recommendation. Exclusive full color, double-sided bookplate signed by authors Greg Biga and Jon B. Cooke. A spirited biography of one of the most prolific creators in the history of American comics! From a start in 1947 at the Simon & Kirby shop, John Severin co-created the legendary Western strip American Eagle, and became an EC Comics mainstay, working with Harvey Kurtzman on MAD and Two-Fisted Tales. In addition to a 40 year association with Cracked magazine, his pivotal Marvel Comics work included an extended run on The Hulk, and teaming with sister Marie Severin to create the definitive comics version of King Kull. TwoMorrows, 2021....More.

Item Code: JOHSEH
Hard Cover, 8x11, 160pg, Partial Color
$39.95

This was a long time coming, but well worth the wait. It comes with one of my all-time favorite bookplates which we made up for it. Don’t miss this.

Also don’t miss TwoMorrows’ Reed Crandall: Illustrator of the Comics (with bookplate) and Mac Raboy: Master of the Comics. Both are written by Roger Hill and have my highest recommendation.

TOPS The Complete Collection of Charles Biro's Visionary 1949 Comic Book Series
Collects Tops #1-2, 1949. Oversized 11x14. Our Highest Recommendation. The extremely rare two-issue adult comics experiment created by Charles Biro and Lev Gleason Publishing in 1949. Some of the best craftsmen working in comics at that time drew these pulpy, sexy, and melodramatic stories: Dan Barry, George Tuska, Reed Crandall (pre-EC crime tales), Bob Fuji et al. Also articles by Dashiell Hammet and actor Melvyn Douglas. Profusely illustrated and informative Introduction by editor and historian Michael T. Gilbert (with Bill Spicer) and a whopping 27 beautifully illustrated Biographical & End Notes by Gilbert and Roger Hill! Fantagraphics, 2022. ...More.

YOSHITOSHI One Hundred Aspects of the Moon
Highly Recommended. Edited by Bas Verberk. Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-92) was the last great woodblock print master of the ukiyo-e tradition. With his distinctive dramatic line and use of gorgeous colors, Yoshitoshi was soon recognized by his contemporaries as the most outstanding woodblock artist of his time. This is his greatest achievement. The 100 works here brings to life the history and mythology of ancient Japan—with the moon as part of each. Minor nudity. Outstanding work! Walther König, Köln. 2022....More.

Item Code: YOSHOH

Warehouse Find – Publisher File Copies

WILL EISNER'S HOW TO AVOID DEATH & TAXES AND LIVE FOREVER
Warehouse Find. First printing from 1975. Recommended. By Will Eisner. The famed creator of The Spirit and the inventor of the graphic novel produced and self-published a series of "Gleeful Guides" in the 1970s that are little known to most of his fans. A tongue-in-cheek look at the only two subjects which Benjamin Franklin said were certain in life. Filled with great Will Eisner art throughout. Created in 1975, three years before his seminal A Contract With God changed the comics medium forever. Poorhouse Press, 1975....More.

Item Code: WEHOW
Soft Cover, 8x10, 64pg, b&w

HARVEY KURTZMAN'S JUNGLE BOOK
Warehouse Find. Third printing from 1989. Highly Recommended. Introduction by Art Spiegelman. We won't mince words. This is simply one of the most influential comic creations of all time. Created in 1959 by MAD-founder Harvey Kurtzman after two crushing failures (Trump and Humbug), Jungle Book was created for paperback book pioneer Ian Ballantine. It was the very first paperback of all original comics and one of the very earliest graphic novels. Four stories, each parodying an element of popular culture: TV shows Peter Gunn and Gunsmoke; the (comics) publishing industry; and the deep south of the 1950s. Goodman Beaver appearance.Kitchen Sink Press, 1989. ...More.

Item Code: HKJUNG

HARVEY KURTZMAN THE GRASSHOPPER AND THE ANT
Warehouse Find from 2002. Recommended. Introduction by Denis Kitchen. In 1960 the late comics genius Harvey Kurtzman created a marvelous beatnik take on the ancient Aesop fable. The comic story, in many ways, reflected his own attraction to the beat movement and his internal ant vs. grasshopper struggle. The only previous appearance of this poignant story was decades ago in Esquire magazine, where the panels were reproduced small and blurry. The story remained forgotten and unknown, even to most Kurtzman fans. Denis Kitchen Publishing, 2002....More.

THE LIONS OF LENINGRAD
Recommended. By Jean-Claude van Rijckeghem. Art by Thomas Du Caju. When the German army begins its invasion of Soviet Russia, four children are evacuated to the countryside: Maxim, the son of a senior Communist Party official; Pyotr, the son of writers; Anka, the daughter of a concert violinist; and Grigory, the son of a pilot that was executed for insubordination. The farm where they are staying is attacked and the train that is supposed to take them to safety is blown to bits by German planes. The four children must fight through enemy lines but that is only the beginning of one of the most prolonged and destructive sieges in history. Already in his thirties, he recorded his first album to widespread international acclaim. He encountered a who’s who of musical luminaries: Lou Reed, Nico, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, and Phil Spector, who held a gun to Cohen’s head during a coke-fueled, all-night recording session. LIFE OF CHE An Impressionistic Biography
By Héctor Germán Oesterheld. Art by Alberto Breccia and Enrique Breccia. One of the most anticipated volumes in the Alberto Breccia Library. Originally released as part of a graphic biography series in January 1969, it came out in Argentina only a year after Ernesto “Che” Guevara had died and reached an audience beyond comics readers. In the 1970s, the military government raided its publisher, destroying the means to reprint the book. The comic was presumed to be lost to history, until a publisher in Spain restored it in 1987. It has never been translated into English until now. Fantagraphics, 2022....More.

Illustrator’s Quarterly Glamour Special mis-bound

We’ve found several copies (but not all) with a repeated set of pages replacing the proper set. If you bought one from us, look to see pages 133-140. If you find 117-124 repeated, contact us and we’ll make it right. We’re down to 12 copies; this is being reprinted in June but it will be August until we have more.

The IQ ERB Special was retitled a Tarzan special because so much of it is devoted to the Ape-Man and, specifically, to artist Joe Jusko’s work. We’re featuring this on our next catalog’s cover, using Tarzan and the Ant-Men, which was done as a cover for the new ERB Inc Tarzan editions. It’s a great piece, and Joe was pleased to see it featured on our cover! We’re essentially out of copies but I’m hoping our reorder comes in soon…

Flesk News

Upcoming are books by Brad Kunkle, Arthur Adams, and Rachel and Terry Dodson. The Art of Franklin Booth ended a very successful Kickstarter campaign and we expect to see copies in August or September. We already pre-sold 20% of our allocated Publisher Hardcover Editions.
