MASTERPIECES OF FANTASY ART 40th Anniversary Edition
By Dian Hanson. Fantasy art, that colorful blend of myth, muscle and sexy maidens, took off in 1923 with the launch of Weird Tales magazine, was reinvigorated in the 1960s with The Lord of the Rings, Conan the Barbarian paperbacks with Frank Frazetta covers, and the late ‘60s emergence of fantasy psychedelia. It went big in the ‘70s with the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, the brilliant French magazine Métal Hurlant, and the first Star Wars film. The number of active artists peaked in that decade, but a new generation of fans discovered the genre through fantasy trading card games in the ‘90s, leading to a massive interest in the art form today. This book features original paintings by multiple artists, contextualized by preparatory sketches, sculptures, calendars, magazines, and paperback books, for an immersive dive into this dynamic, fanciful genre. Insightful bios go beyond Wikipedia to give a more accurate and eye-opening look into the life of each artist. This collection will reign as the most exquisite and informative guide to this popular subject for years to come. Taschen, 2023....More.

2024 Calendars

HAIKU JAPANESE ART AND POETRY 2024 Calendar
The roots of Japanese haiku reach back over 1,000 years. In this poetic form, as in life, there is a pause, a shift, in which the poet celebrates sensory awareness of the season, perhaps suggested by the scent of plum blossoms or the silence of snow-covered tree limbs. The timeless appeal of this understated poetry may be the human desire to capture one’s impressions of a fleeting moment. Such seasonal allusions emphasize the essence of haiku: nature and its ephemeral beauty. This calendar features 12 haiku paired with reproductions of exquisite Japanese woodcuts. Each poem is rendered in Japanese calligraphy, Romaji transliteration, and English translation. Pomegranate, 2023....More.

INTERPLANETARY VACATIONS 2024 Calendar
Our favorite calendar yet this year! One small step for man, and one giant leap into the worlds of tomorrow through wonderfully imaginative interstellar travel posters. Each unique destination (Titan, Europa, Enceladus, Kepler-186f, Venus, Mars, Ceres, Trappist-1) is inspired by a different exoplanet — all designed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for the series "Visions of the Future." The project reminds us that we are the architects of our own destiny, and that these far-flung, dreamy galaxies could become real vacation locales in the far future. Pomegranate, 2023....More.

KAWASE HASUI 2024 Calendar
In his elegant landscapes, Kawase Hasui presents a nostalgic view of rural Japan. Created during a time of rapid industrialization, his prints are focused on the natural environment. Intense blues and greens reflect the sea and the countryside, while fair skies and moonlit nights temper the mood. Hasui worked in watercolor, and his sketches were transformed into woodblock prints by a skilled team at the studio of publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō. One of the most prolific artists of the shin hanga movement, Hasui produced over 600 artworks. Twelve quiet scenes are on display in this calendar. Pomegranate, 2023....More.

DINOSAURS THE ART OF SERGEY KRASOVSKIY 2024 Calendar
While paleontologists can spend decades recovering and studying bones and fossils, without a time machine there is no way to truly know exactly what dinosaurs looked like. Bones give us the foundation for their bodies, but time and decay limit our knowledge of defining features like the skin, feathers, cartilage, stature, and muscle mass of these extinct creatures. Giving shape to prehistoric beasts that no human eyes will ever see is an inspired art form that takes a unique combination of science and imagination. Ukrainian paleoartist Sergey Krasovskiy is one of the leaders in his field, incorporating the latest paleontological discoveries into his dynamic paintings. Enjoy 12 of his dinosaur depictions in this calendar. Pomegranate, 2023. ...More.

SEX AND HORROR The Art of Roberto Molino
This is the fifth title in the bestselling series Sex and Horror, which celebrates the publishing phenomenon known as "fumetti sexy" - Italian adult comics with a unique take on such genres as horror, crime, fantasy, history, and fairy tales. Wilder and weirder than you can imagine, they were some of the most outrageous and shocking comics ever produced. The comics were hugely successful due in part to their uninhibited mix of twisted humor, gory violence, and up-front eroticism; however, what makes them so sought-after today is their technicolor cover illustrations rendered by classically trained painters. One of the most notorious of the cover artists was Roberto Molino, whose artworks often parodied the popular TV shows and films of the day, including Kojak (Kondor), The Bionic Woman (Bionika), and Rambo (Raimbo). Korero Press, 2023. Mature Readers. ...More.

You can also see a shorter but excellent tribute by Alex Grand here, which details all of Jim’s many publications.
