CREATURES FROM THE SUBCONSCIOUS Signed
Signed! Highly Recommended. Denis calls these his “chipboard” drawings. Drawn without pencil prelims or any aforethought, the spontaneous images are created on the unforgiving pulpy surface of chipboard, the stiff backer board on legal pads and similar. They occasionally remind us of R. Crumb's more surreal work and also of Basil Wolverton — high praise indeed. There's nothing normal here. These are all from another dimension of strange creatures, stranger settings, all with some kind of bizarre story behind them...but it's for you to figure out what the heck caused Denis to create each one. Demented? Oh, yes. Tinto Press, 2023....More.

Our Highest Recommendation. By Denis Kitchen and Violet Kitchen. Famed artist and publisher Denis Kitchen and his daughter Violet Kitchen have created the first-ever comprehensive examination of this great artist, while collecting an amazing array of 300 generally scarce images. Harrison Cady (1877-1970) was one of the definitive magazine illustrators and cartoon artists of the first half of the 20th century. He created countless overflowing worlds of anthropomorphic lives: the Peter Rabbit Sunday page, the Happy Chaps for the magazine St. Nicholas, and illustrations that brought to life dozens of the Thornton Burgess books, filled with talking woodland animals and beloved by readers. HAILSTONE
Highly Recommended. By Rafael Scavone. Art by Rafael De Latorre and Wesllei Manoel. The isolated Montana town of Hailstone, during the civil war of the 1860s, is cut off from the outside world by a brutal winter. Food is running low and people are going missing. Desperate townsfolk turn to Sheriff Denton Ross and the nearby military factory for help. But why is the factory here, so far from the war? And how is it able to supply the Union forces with the town cut off by snow? In their search for answers, Sheriff Ross and his deputy Tobias will discover dark secrets about the mysterious factory, shocking Frankenstein-like experimentation with creating super-soldiers, and Ross’ own past…if they survive. UNDERSTANDING SUPERHERO COMIC BOOKS
Highly Recommended. By Alex Grand. Foreword by Jim Steranko. This work dissects the origin and growth of superhero comic books, their major influences from comic strips and the pulps, and the creators behind them. It demonstrates how Batman, Wonder Woman, Captain America and many more stand as time capsules of their eras, rising and falling with societal changes, and reflecting an amalgam of influences. The book covers in detail the iconic superhero comic book creators and their unique contributions in their quest for realism, including Julius Schwartz and the science-fiction origins of superheroes; the collaborative design of the Marvel Universe by Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, and Steve Ditko; Jim Starlin’s incorporation of the death of superheroes in comic books; John Byrne and the revitalization of superheroes in the modern age; and Alan Moore’s deconstruction of superheroes. McFarland, 2023....More.

MAY MORRIS ARTS & CRAFTS DESIGNER
Recommended. The first fully illustrated introduction to May Morris, a leading contributor to the Arts and Crafts Movement and daughter of famed designer William Morris. It examines Sketches and Watercolors, Wallpapers and Embroidery, Book Covers and Designs, the Art of Dress, Jewelry and Metalwork. One of the leading female contributors to the Arts and Crafts Movement, she ran the embroidery department of her father’s famous firm Morris & Co., and had a successful freelance career as a designer, artist, and exhibitor, founding the Women’s Guild of Arts in 1907 and undertaking a lecture tour in the United States between 1909 and 1910. May’s approach to embroidery was innovative and widely influential in the UK and abroad, yet her important contribution to embroidery is often overshadowed by the accomplishments of her more famous father. LEONORA CARRINGTON REVELATION
In recent years, the art and fiction of Surrealist painter and author Leonora Carrington have received much mainstream recognition, but until now there has been no authoritative overview of her work. Divided into 10 sections, Revelation introduces Carrington’s singular artistic universe, displaying an extensive array of her wide-ranging creations (including paintings, drawings and tapestries) and fusing a chronological narrative of her life with a study of the most prominent themes in her work, from her training and early influences in England and Florence to her contact with the Surrealists in Paris, through her time in Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche, her traumatic experiences in Spain, her immigration to New York and her new homeland in Mexico. Punctuating the reproductions are archival materials, book excerpts and documentary photographs. RM/Fundación Mapfre, 2023....More.

Next is the work of Howard Chandler Christy, known today for his "Christy Girl" (the successor to the "Gibson Girl") and for his iconic WWI military recruitment and Liberty Loan posters. Many of his rare nudes are included; most of the art is from original paintings. In 1938, Time magazine called him "the most commercially successful U.S. artist."Illustrated Press, 2023....More.

Using this unlikely cast of misfits, Gerber turned Marvel's "non-team" into a locus of innovation by deconstructing genre conventions and adding a healthy dose of absurdity. From the Elf With a Gun to Bambi and the Bozos, each storyline is a challenging critique of the era's culture. The Headmen Saga is one of the high points in Gerber's celebrated career. Our Highest Recommendation One of our favorite artists illustrates one of our favorite fantasy tales, the 19th century poem by Christina Rossetti, sister of Pre Ralphaelite artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti. An astonishing 100 drawings and watercolor paintings are packed into an 88-page full color book, an oversized 10x12 inch hardcover with a printed dust jacket and an introduction written by the one and only Charles Vess. Jim Vadeboncouer, Jr. (1946-2023)

Jim Vadeboncoeur, Jr. my long-time friend and a major figure in comics fandom, passed away July 7th after battling liver issues for the last several years. Up until his health issues, Jim had a powerful online presence with his website, bpib.com, that boasted 110 biographies of comics, magazine and book illustrators.

Regretfully during his illness, he lost his domain name. His family is working now to bring up those bios on a new website and we’ll let you know. Ideally I’d like to see the out-of-print issues of Image s(#1-6) and Black and White Images (#1-2) available for free download when that site goes back up.

Here’s a picture of Jim in his garage, behind him are boxes of Images and The Art of Everett Raymond Kinstler which he produced. He’s signing copies of his Images Portfolio, which was released in conjunction with his final issue of Images, #13 (his finest bonus-sized issue, done as a highly successful Kickstarter program).

When Jim moved to Paris several years ago, he left his inventory with us. As a tribute to his life and contributions, we are giving away two issues of Images, free of charge. We do need to recover postage cost, so we ask that you add one or both to a regular order of any size, as long as it is at least one item.

And here is our tribute page to Jim. There are also tributes on Craig Yoe’s Facebook page for Yoe Books, and I’ll be writing a bio for Gary Groth’s Fantagraphics. I will post this full biography/remembrance on this same website page devoted to Jim, as soon as I’ve finished it, in the next few days.
