ARTHUR RACKHAM MASTERPIECES OF ART Bargain Priced. Recommended. By Joseph Simas. Victorian born illustrator and artist Arthur Rackham influenced much of the book and commercial illustration art of the first half of the 20th Century. The impish detail of his hundreds of drawings brought humor, pathos and romance to fairy stories and classic tales, from the Brothers Grimm and Peter Pan to his exquisite work on Alice in Wonderland. His water-color work and the graceful power of his ink and line work influenced the Golden Age illustrators of the 1920s, through to the pulps of Weird Tales, and the comic book artists of today, including Michael Kaluta, Charles Vess and others. 21-page illustrated career overview by Simas. STRANGE Volume 1 Collects #1-5, 1957-58. By Alex A. Blum and Iger Shop. From tiny company Ajax, here's an early post-code mystery and supernatural title. They offer very good covers and the artwork and stories are very much in the pre-code style. The Iger shop used the same artists that were doing Fiction House titles like Ghost, Jumbo, Wings and Sheena. There are even creepy and horror elements to the story, but without the overt blood and guts prevalent before the comics code. "Banshee Belle," " The Black Cloud," "The Phantom Archers," "Portrait of Greed," "Prisoner of the Shadows," "Strange Spirits," etc. PS Artbooks, 2025....More. |

I’ve been given an award by the Billy Ireland Museum, the annual Tom Spurgeon award. If I can swing it, I’ll put in an appearance at their days-long show in October—it's just that it's almost on top of OAF and two other shows we are doing near the same time. But I am honored to be getting the award, for service to fandom, and I’ll put a link here as soon as something more is up on their website. Here’s the 2024 award winner. |
The unpublished art is on pages 1, 39 (one of the Vampis), 40 (two of the roughs), 45 (the Gollum rough), 60 (the two roughs), 70, 71 (all 3 printed in color for the first time), 73, 74, 76, and 77. 18 pieces, I think; some of the Book Club illustrations haven't been included in any other FF book, either, and it includes more Canaveral art in one place, including Caz's complete Frazetta Burroughs portfolio from 1968, which first collected the work for TWO Canaveral Press hardcovers that were never published, Pellucidar and At the Earth’s Core! ~Bud |
