Ernie Bushmiller's Nancy is one of my favorite comic strips. It's pure lines, corny jokes, and simple layouts make it something akin to a good bag of potato chips: once you start, you just can't stop. | I find advertising, especially ads from decades past, to be fascinating. On the surface, they're selling a product or service. But beneath the art and copy, they're promising something else: a better life, sophistication, improved social status. Pipe dreams or hard sell, each ad can be examined on several levels, revealing layers of meaning and intent. And there's the art or staging, which were no doubt workshopped to death before seeing print. Again, fascinating. No wonder they built an entire award-winning TV series around the advertising biz. ~Marty |
