MCCAY
Recommended. By Thierry Smolderen. Art by Jean Phillippe Bramanti. McCay is an invented biography chronicling authentic - though only partially true - stories of the life of the future creator of Little Nemo, Winsor McCay, in which McCay's life is enriched by an imaginary encounter with British mathematician and science fiction writer Charles Hinton--who introduces McCay to the existence of a fourth spatial dimension. And Silas the anarchist, Harry Houdini and William Randolph Hearst. And a murder mystery, perpetrated by a man who should be dead. It's not the bio you might expect, but a fictionalized tale of the artist, from vaudeville worker to newspaper star to animator extraordinaire. Titan Comics, 2018...More.

COMICS ART
By Paul Gravett. Richly illustrated with many images taken from original artwork and rare artifacts, Comics Art gives a fascinating, accessible guide to some of the special properties of sequential art, such as panels, page layouts, speech balloons and wordless "narration". It addresses concerns about how comics perpetuate stereotypes and support the status quo, while assessing their growing significance, notably through autobiography and reportage, as vehicles for provocative voices often silenced in other media. CARTOON COUNTY My Father and His Friends in The Golden Age of Cartoon Make Believe
Highly Recommended. By Cullen Murphy. Now on sale, as heard on NPR's Fresh Air. For a period of about fifty years, many of the nation's top comic-strip cartoonists, gag cartoonists, and magazine illustrators lived within a stone's throw of one another in the southwestern corner of Connecticut. Here lived a tight-knit group of creators responsible for Superman, Beetle Bailey, Snuffy Smith, Rip Kirby, Hagar the Horrible, Hi and Lois, Nancy, The Wizard of Id, The Heart of Juliet Jones, and Joe Palooka, among others. Written by John Cullen Murphy's son, who grew up in this amazing era as his father first drew Big Ben Bolt and then was tapped by Hal Foster to take over Prince Valiant. FSG, 2017. ALPHONSE MUCHA
Highly Recommended. Edited by Tomoko Sato. I thought the entire career of Mucha had been explored in previous books, but I am proved wrong here. Explore the development of Mucha's career and his achievements as a multifaceted and visionary artist. Six sections highlight Mucha as a commercial artist, a Bohemian; a fine-art painter; a photographer; a mystic; a patriot (i.e. returning to his Czech homeland to create the fabulous Slav Epic murals); and a philosopher. HEATH ROBINSON Masterpieces of Art
Highly Recommended. By Susan Grange and C.P. Gregory. Illustrator and cartoonist W. Heath Robinson is renowned for his ingenious and haphazard contraptions--he was known as the "Rube Goldberg of England." His witty drawings of complicated machines are ironically designed to simplify everyday life, but always manage to make everything appear more complicated! His work is steeped in the humor of calamity, including World Wars I and II, and his name soon became synonymous for absurd and makeshift devices--as well as the superb advertising art and illustrated books he also created. The Calla facsimile books from the Golden Age of Illustration include many of our favorite books. Calla is a division of the large and prestigious Dover Publishers.

The Taschen titles are all adult books, and several were very popular still at cover price.

The IDW and Image Comics titles include some very good graphic novels that we never before handled.

The Underwood Books are publisher file copies that Tim Underwood put away many years ago. They include top-end Limited, Deluxe and Signed editions that were thought to be sold out many years ago.
