The Call of Cthulhu, Robert Williams, Misty Presents, Katurran Odyssey, Bill Sienkiewicz and more of the Classic Comics Press Sale.

I really like The Call of Cthulhu, with huge, full color illustrations accompanying the original Lovecraft prose. Robert Williams is a magnum opus coffee-table book of his career. Misty Presents is a sleeper, with Romero good-girl art. We continue the Classic Comics Press Sale with Kelly Green, Big Ben Bolt, Buck O'Rue and Dondi. Plus James Bond, Stanley Meltzoff, Guido Crepax, Barney Google and EC's scarcest title, Modern Love!

Art and Illustrated Books

THE CALL OF CTHULHU
Oversized hardcover with exquisite artwork. Our Highest Recommendation. By H.P. Lovecraft, art by François Baranger. Introduction by John Howe. The Call of Cthulhu was first published in Weird Tales in 1928 and it's an absolute classic, spawning countless spin-off stories and art right to the present day. Now, French artist François Baranger presents the ultimate illustrated version. The art is just amazing; his vision of the giant sea god Cthulhu is one of the best ever. A testament to the quality is that the hugely respected John Howe (Lord of the Rings) contributes a major essay on HPL and Baranger's interpretation. The complete story text is here, intermingled with full and double-page illustrations. Design Studio Press, 2019...More.

Our Highest Recommendation. Art by Robert Williams. A career-spanning collection of the iconic painter's fine art, including over 300 oil paintings as well as drawings, sculptures, and more. Simply put, this is the definitive volume that Williams has been working towards his entire career. It's huge in page count, and huge in size. Robert himself provides a fascinating six-page preface and annotations all through the book. This begins with his first work and runs though his entire career, including sculptures, rare photos, artifacts and ephemera. Fantagraphics, 2019...More.

EC ARCHIVES MODERN LOVE
Collects #1-8, 1949-50, 32 complete stories. Recommended. Art by Al Feldstein, Craig, Palais, Ingels, Wood et al. The most rarely seen EC series is finally collected. Al Feldstein not only writes but provides art and covers for most issues. He's joined by EC all-stars, albeit in their early days at EC and in comics at all! Stories of forbidden love, betrayed lovers, and strange romances--plenty of echoes of what EC will be doing in the Crime and Horror titles soon after this! Fun stuff, something new for EC fans that thought they'd seen it all. And, uh-oh, Overstreet says we have bra-and-panties panels, plus three of the original issues here are "scarce" in the guide. MISTY PRESENTS THE JORDI BADIA ROMERO COLLECTION
Recommended. Deluxe over-sized collection of best-of stories by an unsung master of British horror comics. Here is the incredible art of Jordi Badía Romero (brother of Modesty Blaise artist Enrique Romero). This is one of two 1970s Fleetway titles that he made a huge contribution to. His career began along with his brother's in the early 1950s, with Spanish romance and adventure work. Under the name Jorge Galvez, he did several stories from Creepy; then he worked on Tarzan in the 1980s. His fine-line style is very close to that of his brother's, who is considered the finest Modestly Blaise artist ever. Rebellion /2000AD, 2019...More.

BARNEY GOOGLE FOR PRESIDENT 1928
Library of American Comics 14. Highly Recommended. By Billy DeBeck. Four classic stories are emblematic of what made this strip great. Barney and his horse Spark Plug get involved in hijinks and schemes when they enter the Million-Dollar Cross-Country Marathon, decide to swim the English Channel, and when Barney joins the Secret and Mysterious Order of the Brotherhood of Billy Goats (in DeBeck's send-up of secret societies and fraternal lodges), culminating in Barney Google's historic run for President of the United States in 1928! Oblong hardcover, presents one daily to each page, a perfect way to read these. IDW, 2019...More.

Helped by Felix Leiter, Bond tracks Mr. Big through the jazz joints of Harlem, to the Everglades, and on to the Caribbean. KELLY GREEN The Complete Collection
Closeout Price! Save $25. Highly Recommended. By Leonard Starr. Art by Stan Drake. This collects all five Kelly Green graphic novels: "The Go-Between," "One, Two, Three, Die...," "The Million Dollar Hit," "The Blood Tapes," and for the first time in English, "The Comic-Con Heist"! Using over 100 originals and restoring the original b&w artwork in a larger size. Beautifully drawn, violent and VERY sexy, starring a lady detective "with a thirst for vengeance." Starr and Drake were veteran comic strip artists when they did these, expressly creating a magnum-opus good-girl art story--Drake is a brilliant fine-line illustrator, a la Alex Raymond and John Prentice. Kelly is bathing, in skimpy negligees or naked in bed, stripping off her clothes...in one story, she goes undercover as a go-go dancer in garters and nylons, and of course hangs with similarly hot ladies. Offbeat, unusual, good reading. Classic Comics Press, 2015...More.

JOHN CULLEN MURPHY'S BIG BEN BOLT Dailies Volume 1
Closeout Price! Feb 1950-May '52. Recommended. Introduction by Cullen Murphy. The first two years of a fine strip about a boxer and his adventures in and out of the ring. Murphy was hand-picked by Hal Foster to take over Prince Valiant and has often been dismissed by Valiant fans, including myself, for his work on Val. But this, more than 15 years earlier, shows an illustrator working in the same fine-line photo-realistic style of Alex Raymond and John Prentice. I kid you not! This is a very well drawn adventure strip that really reminds me of Rip Kirby! But now we have a  true two-fisted hero. Classic Comics Press, 2010...More.

Item Code: BBB01

THE ADVENTURES OF BUCK O'RUE
Closeout Price! Dailies Jan 1951-July '52 & Sundays May 1951-Dec 52. Recommended. By Dick Huemer & Paul Murry. This is a spoof of the then-current craze for westerns and cowboy heroes. It is satisfyingly thick (300 pages!) with lots of detail about both creators and how the strip came to be. Here is the full story of a wonderful 1950s comic strip, very much a Disney animated feature cleverly disguised as a daily and Sunday comic strip, with these two creators' incredible talents evident from the first page. Classic Comics Press, 2012...More.

Follow the refugee Dondi, who starts as orphan friend to G.I.s in Europe, and comes to America with the eternal hope for a better future. Like Orphan Annie before him, he touches hundreds of lives. He fights crime and injustice, gets into hair-raising escapades, and makes himself indispensable to strip readers. Interview with Hasen, and an introduction by celebrated cartoonist Jules Feiffer. Last week we announced the first books in this sale: Lance, Cisco Kid, Rusty Riley and Casey Ruggles Vol 1. They are doing very well, but I think we have enough to last for a while. Lance has been the strongest seller. In the next two weeks we'll finish out with the runs of Mary Perkins on Stage by Leonard Starr, and The Heart of Juliet Jones by Stan Drake; these two veteran creators collaborated on Kelly Green, above.

3...2...1...Gone

We missed last week, but here's a new batch of 50 more books that we have just one, two or three copies left before they are gone for good. And click here for all of these in one big file. You can sort them by lowest price, also. Many are newly discounted to help move them out; we really DO need the room for newer items!!

Rare & Out of Print

Three volumes of the Hastings House Prince Valiant series were added this week, all illustrated by Hal Foster. We added another couple Howard Pyle compilations, including his Book of Pirates. Also a nine print portfolio with prints signed by Tim Kirk and Robert Hass, and the original Sky Masters of the Space Force, signed by Dick Ayres.

STANLEY MELTZOFF Picture Maker
Limited, 900. Highly Recommended. Stanley Meltzoff was one of the first paperback cover artists to be noted for his work in the science fiction field, painting dramatic images that escaped the pulp influence evident in most other science fiction covers of the period. Along with paperback cover paintings in numerous genres, Meltzoff also produced work for slick magazines, including Scientific AmericanLifeFortune, and the Saturday Evening Post. SECONDARY SUPERHEROES OF GOLDEN AGE COMICS
When Superman debuted 1938, he ushered in the superhero—Batman, Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, Captain America, hundreds of new characters. But what about the many less well-known heroes who lined up to fight crooks, super villains and Hitler? Such as the Shield, the Black Terror, Crimebuster, Cat-Man (and Kitten), Dynamic Man, the Blue Beetle, the Hollywood starlet turned crime fighter The Black Cat, and even Frankenstein--first a spoof, later a dark horror series? These and other four-color fighters crowded the newsstands from the late 1930s through the early 1950s. McFarland, 2020. Due Feb. ...More.

BLACKHAWK BLOOD & IRON
Highly Recommended. By Howard Chaykin. Blackhawk is currently in development as a movie from director Steven Spielberg! Howard Chaykin's 1988 miniseries is collected in book format for the first time. After years of mistreatment by DC, Chaykin recaptures the vintage 1940s look of this long-running, best-selling series. Blackhawk began in the pages of Military Comics, ran for 102 issues there, then quickly got its own title and along with Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, was one of the only heroes that made it non-stop from the 40s to the 70s. DC Comics, 2020. Due Feb. ...More.

From Superman, Wonder Woman and Daredevil to propaganda and racism, Take That, Adolf! offers a long, highly detailed look at how comics embraced the war, sold zillions to kids as well as soldiers, and who did it all, including rare female creators. And Wonder Woman wasn't the only heroine to punch her way into the hearts of fans. The early (and sexier) Black Cat, The Woman in Red, Miss America, Miss Victory...they are each explored here also. Mature Readers

The Complete Crepax Volume 5: American Stories is here, collecting EIGHT complete graphic novels. Several feature the lovely and Justine-like innocent, model and photographer Valentina, including About Valentina, Pandora's Box, Magic Lantern and others.

Volume 1 is sold out, but we still have Volumes 2-4 [CREP02H, etc. $75, $65 each] and the slipcased set of 3 & 4 [CREP02P. $150, $125]. We assume there will be a slipcased set of 5 & 6 offered, as usual, but we have no details on it yet. These are very impressive, oversized with large page counts.

News and Notes

Syd Mead

We just got word that illustrator Syd Mead passed away at the very end of December. He was 86. His name was legend, as they say. I've paraphrased the following from his website, kotaku.com, which has a wonderful selection of art you might enjoy:

Concept artist and futurist Syd Mead is famous for his work on movies like Blade Runner, Tron, Star Trek, Aliens and Elysium. He even helped out on Gundam. He had only announced his retirement in September.

While popularly known for his work as a concept artist, Mead also left a mark as a futurist and corporate artist, working for companies like Ford, Philips and United States Steel, most often providing illustrations of his bold, clean visions of the future.

Mead's influence on video games, from vehicles to architecture, is almost too great to summarize, but it can be seen in projects he worked on directly (like the CyberRace series) and indirectly (the Mass Effect series' visual style owes a lot to Mead).

2020 Calendars

We're nearly out of a lot of titles now, with as few as 5 or 6 left as I write this. If you are thinking about a New Year's calendar, act now for the best selection. We'll put what's left on sale in February, but it will be a very short list this year. We kept orders tight, and some titles quickly sold out, surprising us.
