LITTLE JOE SUNDAY COMICS By Harold Gray 1937-1942
With the untimely death of his cousin and fellow cartoonist, Ed Leffingwell, Harold Gray took the reins of this seminal Western comic strip. He created a combination of dark adventure, as seen in his Little Orphan Annie, and a modern-West version of "family life" comics like Gasoline Alley. This book presents the best of the Little Joe comic strip from 1937 to 1942, with violence, humor and warmth in a low-key style that could only be told in art and story by a master, Harold Gray. THIMBLE THEATRE AND THE PRE-POPEYE CARTOONS OF E.C. SEGAR
Highly Recommended. More than a decade before he created the world's most famous cartoon sailor, E.C. Segar began his comics career in the movies. He drew cartoons for silent movie theater slides, the Charlie Chaplin comic strip, and a daily strip about Chicago's movies and entertainment. Then, in 1919, he penned his own “small screen” creation for the newspapers, Thimble Theatre, where Popeye was to be born. Here are all of E.C. Segar's early comics and illustrations, and 125 pre-Popeye Thimble Theater Sunday pages, including the complete run of the famed Western desert saga, a series that rivals his later work in superb art, storytelling and humor. CALENDAR GIRLS, SEX GODDESSES, AND PIN-UP QUEENS OF THE 40S, 50S, AND 60S
Vintage full color pin-up photography, 1940s-1960s. Highly Recommended. Already a bestseller for us! It was the glamorous movie stars of the 1930s that first began the era of pin-up. Stars like Betty Grable and Jean Harlow oozed sexuality--many even posed nude. By the 1940s, this was a new phenomenon that sold millions of calendars and magazines--nudes, but provative, never explicit, flirtatious but also freespirited. The images never crossed a certain moral line. And that's what we have here, from Marilyn Monroe to Bettie Page, Diane Webber to Hollywood actresses moonlighting for some extra money. Schiffer, 2019...More.
