LE PATER ALPHONSE MUCHA'S SYMBOLIST MASTERPIECE Hardcover With Prints
With 10 additional 6x9 inch prints! Only the first 35 copies will come with additional prints. Our Highest Recommendation. By Thomas Negovan. By 1899, Alphonse Mucha was the most recognizable artist of Art Nouveau graphics and the most celebrated illustrator in Paris. So Mucha insisted upon creating a deeply personal work, a magnificent, oversized deluxe limited edition, Le Pater. For the remainder of his life he considered this his masterpiece. This Symbolist story features a female deity protecting humankind, sophisticated occult themes and mystical illustrations. And this edition from Century Guild is one of the most beautifully produced books I've seen: oversized, quarter leather, gilt embossed cover and gilt page edges...and packed with amazing work, from never-before-seen studies and paintings, each magnificent page of Le Pater itself. WORLD OF MUCHA A Journey to Two Fairylands Paris and Czech
Highly Recommended. By Hiroshi Unno. A superlative collection of Mucha's works, behind highly ornate, silver-embossed covers, spanning his entire career from his beginnings in Paris to his final days in what was then known as Czechoslovakia after four years in the United States. His most representative works are featured, not only in the field of fine art but also in editorial design and graphic design. As a special feature, this book introduces more typography and package design works compared to other publications on Mucha's work. A good deal of this is not collected elsewhere. And, of course, Mucha's masterpiece the "Slav Epic" is also covered in detail, along with an interpretation and its historical background. PIE, 2017...More.

IT'S ALIVE! A VISUAL HISTORY OF FRANKENSTEIN
Recommended. By Elizabeth Campbell Denlinger. Commemorating the two-hundredth anniversary of Frankenstein, trace the origins and impact of Mary Shelley's novel -- a classic of world literature, a masterpiece of horror, and a forerunner of science fiction. Shelley conceived the archetype of the mad scientist who dares to flout the laws of nature. She devised a conflicted creature, eloquent and repulsive, torn between good and evil. In the movies he can be a brute pure and simple, yet he is still an object of compassion. Includes an art gallery with illustrations by Wrightson, Lynd Ward and Barry Moser, comics by Dick Briefer and Ploog, powerful movie posters and much more. ROY THOMAS PRESENTS FRANKENSTEIN Volume 8 Slipcased
Closeout Price! Limited, 300! Collects #28-33, 1954. Recommended. Written and drawn by Dick Briefer, with Mort Meskin and Marvin Stein. While earlier issues were pure humor, here Frankenstein continues, and in fact concludes, its dark, sinister turn into pure horror. I particularly like these stories, as the mute monster relentlessly deals out harsh, final justice to anyone who wishes him ill. He also became a silent judge-and-jury when he finds others persecuted or wronged. Each issue also includes two back-up stories, horror tales typical of the horror comics genre before the code came along. PS Artbooks, 2015. Out of Print....More.

SPECTRE THE WRATH OF THE SPECTRE Omnibus
1966-81. Highly Recommended. By Gardner Fox & Murphy Anderson, Michael Fleisher & Jim Aparo et al.. Originally introduced in 1940 and co-created by Jerry Siegel, co-creator of Superman, the Spectre was a green-caped, white-skinned, all-powerful demi-god who meted out his own version of justice. DC's grim arbiter resurfaced in the 1960s, brought back by the dream-team of Julius Schwartz, Gardner Fox and Murphy Anderson in Showcase 1966, then to The Brave and the Bold, ten issues of his own title, also by Fox and Anderson, and ultimately to return to the all-powerful 1940s version dark Spectre as reimagined by Fleisher and Aparo in Adventure Comics #431-440. DC Comics, 2020. Due July. ...More.

News and Notes

Russ Cochran 1937-2020

Russ just passed away last weekend, at the age of 82. Russ was one of the most important publishers in the comics field. He helped son-in-law (later on) Bruce Hershenson to do the first EC Reprints in the early 1970s. Then he did his own EC Classics, EC Portfolios, King Portfolio, The Complete EC Library, co-published The Complete Carl Barks Library and The Complete Little Lulu Library, some in cooperation with Bruce Hamilton/Another Rainbow. These two gentlemen and Burrell Rowe also opened the fabled Camelot Comic Book Store in Houston in the seventies. They hired a young Richard Evans and put him on path to opening his own stores, Bedrock City Comics, also in Houston.

Along the way Russ did superb reprints of Thunda #1, and also re-reprinted all the EC comics in individual issues and annuals. He also started (with Gemstone) the EC Archives series, which Dark Horse is still publishing today.

Russ was a physics professor, still teaching when I first met him. We both did the convention circuit throughout the 1970s, across the U.S., just as he began his publishing ventures. At the end of every show, he'd come up, put his arm around my shoulders, and say “Bud, let's make a deal.” I'd go home with restocks of his books and he'd go home in an emptier truck. He always had Dr. Pepper—in bottles—to share, he brought his own personal stash.

I carried all of his comics-related books and they were featured in catalog after catalog for years. I still sell his out of print Complete EC, Barks and Lulu Libraries, along with anything else I can find of his. All his books were top quality and built to last, with pride of place in any collection (mine included).

My good friend Bruce Hershenson (emovie.com), who moved out from New York and lived with me for a little while in the early 1970s, eventually married Russ's daughter Sylvia and they have had five children. Bruce and Sylvia still live in West Plains, Russ's home town, not far from his rustic, rural spread near the Arkansas border.

I've visited Russ and Bruce twice over the years, and here is a picture of the first visit. I'm meeting Russ's chimp Sammy on his home turf in the back yard. That's a very young Sylvia in the background. You could certainly write quite the story about Russ and his career in comics. Right up to this week, he was still holding his monthly comic art auctions.

Russ was truly a "good old boy" in the very best sense of the word. Smart, creative, supportive, and a rugged individual. And he loved EC and Frazetta and all the good stuff. Besides Sammy the Chimp, Russ had wonderful long Tarzan ropes to swing on from the trees on his place, and last I saw him, he was water-blasting away the hillside between his place and a river below, exposing the rocks and making it look like...Tarzan's jungle. Sammy had lots of space to swing around out back there above the river.

Rest in Peace, my friend. You made a great many collectors, including myself, very happy with the wonderful collections you gave us.

Upcoming Shows

San Diego Comic Fest March 5-8 — I'm only attending this, not setting up. I will be doing a panel with Jeff Gelb and others on the late Bill Schelly and I plan to give away copies of Bill's Golden Age of Comics Fandom to any and all who attend the panel. I'll bring a few other books to sell at half price if I can find a place to put them out.

Los Angeles Vintage Paperback Collectors Show, Glendale, March 8 — Again, no set up, but will try and get up there if I can break away early from Comic Fest.

We'll be exhibiting at these two shows:

Sac-Con [Sacramento Comic Book Show, at Cal Expo] — March 22

Sacramento Antiquarian Book Fair — March 28
