FLAPPER QUEENS Women Cartoonists of the Jazz Age
Highly Recommended. By Trina Robbins. In the 1920s, the figure of The Flapper, with her bobbed hair and angular elbows and knees, short dresses and daring necklines, seemed to exist in a perpetual, euphoric state. Girls discovering freedom and sexuality! Eisner Award-winning herstorian Trina Robbins curates this collection of comic strips by "The Flapper Queens," the six finest woman cartoonists who graced magazines and newspapers with images: Nell Brinkley, Eleanor Schoer, Edith Stevens, Virginia Huget and the amazing, superlative Ethel Hayes (my favorite). Fantagraphics, 2020...More.

Signed by artists Jim Pitts, Charles de Lint, William Lorenzo, and editor/publisher Bob Garcia. The Sorcerer's Ship, Beyond the Golden Stair and Starstone World. These aren't your conventional fantasies, although all the trappings are there. They have a sly humor with plots full of twists and turns, stories which take the reader on strange metaphysical paths, and glorious descriptions that could only come from someone with a painter's eye. Never-before-published Hannes Bok painting on the cover, library cloth with a matching cloth slipcase. American Fantasy Press, 2020...More.

New: Black Mask Library

BLACK MASK LIBRARY BLOOD ON THE CURB
By Joseph T. Shaw. Cover by Stockton Mulford. Joseph T. Shaw, the editor of Black Mask Magazine, has written one of the most exciting adventure mysteries of 1936. Blood on the Curb is about the New York Police Department's bloody battle to wipe out the infamous “Black Hand” gang which terrorized the Lower East Side. Newly-recruited Paul Cardine is placed in charge of a special squad of officers—all of Italian decent—to find the man at the top of what appears to be a consolidated conglomerate of crime families. BLACK MASK LIBRARY BOOMERANG DICE
The Complete Black Mask Cases of Johnny Hi Gear. By Stewart Sterling. Art by Arthur Rodman Bowker and Jes Schlaikjer. Introduction by Will Murray. One of the most talented authors to be recruited to write for Black Mask Magazine following the departure of Dashiell Hammett, Stewart Sterling made a lasting impression on readers with his initial series character, Johnny Hi Gear: undercover police agent K-Five who battled gambling rackets during the Great Depression.Never before reprinted, this popular series jump-started Sterling's writing career which covered spans of time in radio, TV, and hardcovers, along with writing some of pulpdom's most popular heroes, the Black Bat and The Spider. BLACK MASK LIBRARY DEAD AND DONE FOR
The Complete Black Mask Cases of Cellini Smith, Book 1 By Robert Reeves. Long considered one of the best of the Black Mask authors, author Robert Reeves's longest-running detective character actually first appeared in the 1939 novel, Dead and Done For. Cellini Smith, accountant for a New York City pinball gangster, must clear his boss's name after being accused of murder. BLACK MASK LIBRARY DEAD EVIDENCE
The Complete Black Mask Cases of Harrigan. By Ed Lybeck. Art by Arthur Rodman Bowker and Jes Schlaikjer. Introduction by Will Murray. Quite likely one of the most hype -- and most mysterious -- Black Mask authors to ever appear in its pages, Ed Lybeck made his debut as one of editor Joesph Shaw's new faces in the wake of Dashiell Hammett's departure. For Black Mask, Lybeck penned the hard-boiled stories of Francis St. Xavier Harrigan, a former gunman-turned-reporter for the New York Leader. This edition collects -- for the first time -- the entirety of Lybeck's Black Mask output. Includes an all-new introduction by pulp historian Will Murray. Steeger, 2020...More.

BLACK MASK LIBRARY MURDER COSTS MONEY
The Complete Black Mask Cases of Rex Sackler Book 1. By D.L. Champion. Cover by Rafael De Soto. Author D.L. Champion's knack for penning quirky series characters reached a new height with his stories of skinflint shamus Rex Sackler, one of Black Mask's longest-running and most beloved series. Already a reader favorite for his Inspector Allhoff stories in Black Mask's companion title, Dime Detective, Champion chronicled the offbeat cases of Rex Sackler, the greedy gumshoe who “could squeeze a nickel till the buffalo cried uncle.” Steeger, 2020...More.

Item Code: BLMRS01
Soft Cover, 6x9, 379pg, Text/b&w
$24.95

With Sanctum's long running reprints at an end (The Shadow, Doc Savage), we thought we ought to look around at more pulp reprints. So we went to the always reliable Steeger, previously known as Altus Press, and asked for their advice on some of the best books to handle. Black Mask is a new series they just started, and next week we'll be starting their Milo March series.

Here are all the Sanctum books still available, most on sale at half price or less. The more recent Shadows, #116-151, at least those issues still available, remain full price. I don't believe they will be reduced at this point. Shadows up to #115 are $7.50, if still available.

Graphic Novels

THE BIG HOAX
Angoulême Prize Winner and brilliantly drawn. Our Highest Recommendation. By Carlos Trillo. Art by Roberto Mandrafina. A highly original and complex noir adventure. A beautiful young woman in an early 20th Century banana republic is dragged into a life of deceit and lust, as she turns to one man after another to help her survive abuse by a despotic dictator. Ultimately she finds a down-and-out ex cop, who cannot resist her charms and is determined to save the poor girl. But her other seducers and now a hired assassin, The Iguana, are after them to make a martyr of her and a corpse of both. A long, luxurious hardback featuring rich, intriguing color for the first time! Nudity, adult situations. Titan Comics, 2020. Adult Material...More.

Item Code: BIGHH
Hard Cover, 8x11, 128pg, Full Color
$24.99 $21.99

PULP
Our Highest Recommendation. By Ed Brubaker. Art by Sean Phillips and Jacob Phillips. An original graphic novel from the bestselling creators--it may look like a western, but the story begins in New York City in 1939! Max Winters, an aging pulp writer, finds himself drawn into a story not unlike the tales he churns out at five cents a word--tales of a Wild West outlaw dispensing justice with a six-gun (secretly based on his own outlaw youth in the real west). But now Max is having his own issues, has been tracked down by a retired Pinkerton detective, and might be able to make one last big score. Image Comics, 2020...More.

THE WINTER OF THE CARTOONIST
Recommended. By Paco Roca. In the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War and WWII, five extraordinary cartoonists decide to rebel. In 1957, Editorial Bruguera was one of Spain's largest publishing houses, putting out hugely popular weekly magazines and comics. They also retained all rights and creative control of their artists' work. Thoroughly researched, 2017 Eisner Award nominee and Spanish comics superstar Paco Roca  investigates the true story of five cartoonists who, spurred by poor working conditions, arbitrary editorial edicts, and nationwide dictatorial rule, went searching for a life-affirming creative freedom. Fantagraphics, 2020...More.

Item Code: WINTCH
Hard Cover, 7x10, 128pg, Full Color
$21.99 $19.99

OUT OF THE BLUE The Complete Series
Highly Recommended. By Garth Ennis. Art by Keith Burns. Both volumes of the WWII aerial combat classic now in one complete deluxe size hardcover edition, and roughly $10 less. As I said with the individual books, this is not only exciting reading, and good history made real, but it's very, very accurately drawn. A war is a difficult thing to kill. WWII is almost over, but no one seems to have told the Germans, as Royal Air Force pilot Jamie McKenzie finds out when he's assigned flying Mosquito fighter-bombers into deadly shipping strikes along the enemy coast. Aftershock, 2020...More.

Item Code: OUTBH
Hard Cover, 8x11, 152pg, Full Color
$29.99 $26.99

We still have 5 copies of the out of print Out of the Blue Vol 1 ($17.99) and 2 copies of Volume 2, in case you already have one or the other. This new collection doesn't add anything—it puts the two stories together at a discount price.

Here's more on military history. Check out the excellent books from Naval Institute (aka Dead Reckoning), I've read most of them and they are always very good. Coming up from them is Atlas at War: Marvel's War Comics of the Fifties. Stringbags is excellent, so is Night Witches, and Once Upon a Time in France.

FRACTAL COSMOS The Mathematical Art of Alice Kelley 2021 Calendar
Highly Recommended. One of our annual favorites, all new every year and with even more variety this year. Organic computer-generated designs by Alice Kelley, who says, "Fractals are an intuitive glimpse into the infinite order that composes the natural world, as well as being proof that math is beautiful." Well, not necessarily equations as we all know, but when math generates geometry and color, it's amazing, like sea shells and planet orbits, flowers and galaxies, which is what many of these will suggest to you. News and Notes

New website and software

After all our careful planning and our announcement last week, we ran into a glitch and did not launch the new website. The change-over will now occur Friday July 31, 3:00pm PST. So you still have time to advance-order coming items or out of stock items and not pre-pay, until end of day tomorrow.

Slow Shipping

The Post Office is overwhelmed and it's taking inordinate amounts of time for orders to get where they are going. I ordered several comics from Texas and the shipment took 25 days, another took more than two weeks. Please be patient, and be nice to your local carrier. The Post Office is underfunded and understaffed due to politics and we are all paying the price now.

Frazetta Pages

The pages in the Fantastic Paintings of Frazetta were mis-numbered. Four numbers were skipped after page 105, in both editions, but nothing is missing. All the material is there, and all the pages, as promised. Someone in layout made an error in placing the numbers. This will be corrected in the second printing. Our copies of the trade edition, and more copies of the deluxe first edition (now more or less sold out from the publisher and distributor) are due to arrive here any minute now (I am writing this Wednesday, July 29). At the same time, we're restocking the Frazetta Sketchbooks and The Sensuous Frazetta, including deluxe editions. We had some trouble keeping these in stock with the publisher's move. See them all on our website.

I'm leaving Booktown Books, Grass Valley

As I mentioned previously, I am "retiring" from the cooperative used book store that I have been a part of for nearly 20 years now. All my material there is half price, until the end of August when I pack up and leave. If you are in the area, you are welcome to come by and check out my offerings there: art books, adult material, how-to books, YA fiction, sci-fi pbs, conventional and fantasy art books, graphic novels, manga, comics related material. Since I mark-down most material there to 50% off cover price, except for actual new, unblemished copies, it means you can now buy items at 75% off cover price. The store is open seven days a week, 10-6 and 11-5 Sunday. 530-272-4655.

We are now allowing customers to visit our warehouse, but for now, limited to two at a time. Mask required, we can provide one. 13393 Grass Valley Ave, #7. We're open 9am to 4pm Monday through Friday. 530-273-2166
