Software Changeover News

We've hopefully ironed out most of the bugs with our new software conversion, and will be attempting to convert early next week. So any orders placed by Friday noon will ship that day. Orders placed after noon will not ship until Tuesday. Please see News & Notes for more details.

As of August 11th, links in this email and all previous emails, posted on our blog or in your inbox, WILL NOT WORK. This is because our new website comes up on Tuesday August 11th. To get more information and images about any item listed here, on Tuesday August 11th or later, DOUBLE CLICK on the item code, paste it into the general search field on our website, and hit return. Next week's email will have correctly working links to our new website--this extra step is only for this and older emails.

It's a big week for pulp fiction, as you will see below. The Scientific Club and the start of the Milo March series is here. Publisher It's Alive releases three more Sam Glanzman collections. Kirby's Eternals is classic work by Jack from 1974. Wonder Woman from the 1990s offers up something new and different.

The final volume of Corto Maltese is an extra long story about the lost land of Mu. Harem is packed with wonderful Orientalist Art, and Art Nouveau is a huge new art book from Konemann. They Drew As The Pleased brings us up to the present day. Plus some of our favorite 2021 Calendars...

THE COMPLETE TALES OF THE SCIENTIFIC CLUB
28 stories. Recommended. By Ray Cummings. Art by Virgil Finlay, Modest Stein et al. One of the most historically significant Twentieth Century science fiction series ever published is at last collected. A pioneer in pulp science fiction, Ray Cummings inspired an entirely-new fiction genre with his influential story originally published in 1919, The Girl in the Golden Atom, which introduced the world to a series of short stories and novels known as his “Matter, Space and Time” stories. Each featured the Scientific Club who either recounted these tales of fantastic science -- or were directly involved. Steeger, 2020...More.

Apart from the novel-length Race Williams stories, these classic hard-boiled thrillers have rarely been reprinted, if ever. Twenty-one stories in all, the first 16 Race Williams plus 3 more early tales that laid the ground-work for Race, and editorial pieces by Daily himself on inspirations, writing style, and advice. Milo March, a tough private eye from Denver, is sent to Aragon City (which could be Hollywood) to help the City Betterment Committee wipe out the gangsters and hoodlums controlling brothels, bookies, gamblers, shady nightclubs, and the dope traffic. He just has to uncover “Mr. X,” the mystery man who's been raking in a tidy little income by providing protection to the Syndicate. But can Milo accomplish that without stumbling over something even more dangerous -- like who pays Mr. X, and why? Steeger, 2020...More.

In this action-packed Cold War spy adventure, Milo March—private detective and former OSS officer during World War II—is recruited by Army intelligence to carry out a dangerous mission behind the Iron Curtain. An important British diplomat has defected to East Germany, carrying with him secrets about British and American codes. He can also help the Communists gain access to a physicist working in the British Sector on a top-secret project that involves tampering with energy fields affecting the human brain--a bizarre process that could disastrously alter the nature of warfare. “Operation Berlin” demands that Milo kidnap the diplomat before the Russians make him talk. MILO MARCH Volume 3 The Man Inside
Pulp Fiction, first published in 1953. Recommended. By Kendell Foster Crossen. Cover by Robert McGinnis. Samson Hercules Carter is a little man with a big name who has fallen obsessively in love with a diamond. The Tavernier Blue is only a little smaller than a golf ball and worth a fortune.  But the problem is, in the process of pocketing the gem and taking a walk, Carter has also shot a man to death. In one of investigator Milo March's wildest adventures ever, the chase takes him from New York to Lisbon and Madrid. This became a film in 1958, directed by John Gilling and starring Jack Palance and Anita Eckberg. Steeger, 2020...More.

MILO MARCH Volume 4 As Old as Cain
Pulp Fiction, first published in 1957. Recommended. By Kendell Foster Crossen. Cover by Robert McGinnis. Insurance investigator Milo March is under pressure to solve a classic whodunit in a small town. Athens, Ohio, is a place full of historic monuments, many of them still walking the streets. But now the excitement of Hollywood has burst on the scene, with a studio shooting a biopic about a rugged pioneer who played a role in the founding of Athens County. The job seems like a snap—until a bludgeoned body and a lot of smashed-open cases of vintage antiques send everyone into a panic. Among the stolen items is a personal diary which appears to be an object of intense interest, or even obsession. Steeger, 2020...More.

MILO MARCH Volume 5 The Splintered Man
Pulp Fiction, first published in 1955. Recommended. By Kendell Foster Crossen. Cover by Robert McGinnis. Now, as a major in the Army Reserves, March is recalled to tackle an even weirder case than usual. No one knows why Hermann Gruss, head of the counterespionage police in West Germany, disappeared behind the Iron Curtain. Did he defect voluntarily, or was he taken by force? Either way, Milo has to get him back before he reveals secrets that the U.S. shared with him. Some say Gruss suffers from a dread disease and is being treated in East Berlin with the latest wonder drug by his friend Dr. Oderbruch. Milo suspects that Oderbruch, a former Nazi, is experimenting on Gruss, bouncing him in and out of insanity like a yo-yo by dosing him with LSD, then healing his “schizophrenia” with an antidote. Steeger, 2020...More.

MILO MARCH Volume 6 A Lonely Walk
Pulp Fiction, first published in 1956. Recommended. By Kendell Foster Crossen. Cover by Robert McGinnis. March, now a Madison Avenue insurance detective, is sent to Rome to investigate the double-indemnity claim on the policy of a young woman who may have been murdered. Anna Maria went walking on a beach, allegedly to bathe in the healing seawater. A few hours later she was found lying nude on the sand, with no apparent signs of violence to the body. An accidental drowning, says the medical report, and the family puts in a claim for the large benefit. The insurance company, understandably, would like to confirm that the death was indeed an accident. Steeger, 2020...More.

Soft Cover, 5x8, 214pg, Text Only
$14.95

These Milo March novels were incredibly popular by this sixth novel, not unlike the success of Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer, Mike Shayne's Michael Shayne and more recently the Lee Childs Jack Reacher novels. Each one started as a hardcover edition, no small feat in the 1950s, then came out in paperback in the U.S., in Candada, and in now-vintage editions from British publisher Boardman.

Some of the stories were condensed and appeared in pulps, like Blue Book, or in at least one case, as a story in the men's magazine, Cavalier. Artist Rudy Nappi did the covers for many of the 1950s paperbacks. In 1970, the series was released in new editions with covers by Robert McGinnis, which is where the cover art for this new series is taken from. There are 23 Milo March novels in all and I believe Steeger plans to collect them all. We'll offer them all.

Graphic Novels

CORTO MALTESE Volume 12 Mu The Lost Continent
The largest volume yet! By Hugo Pratt. In this final entry of Hugo Pratt's epic series, the master graphic novelist returns to the theme he first explored in the initial episode -- the search for the lost continent of Mu, the mythical Atlantis. A premonition hovers over the entire dreamlike story, as if fate had decided in advance that this would be Corto Maltese's last adventure. The feeling is underscored by the return of most of the major characters seen throughout the long-running saga, like actors giving their final curtain call: Gold Mouth, Morgana, Tristan Bantam, Levi Colombia, Professor Steiner, "the Monk," Cain Groovesnore, Soledad, and (of course) Rasputin...each with their own reason to find the mythical realm. Thus, the circle closes. IDW, 2020...More.

HAREM
Highly Recommended. By Valentine Gallet. In the wake of Bonaparte's Egyptian Campaign, artists of the nineteenth century became fascinated by the Orient and, most particularly, the harems which were so remote from western culture. These places rapidly provided a pretext for drawing the languid bodies of beautiful naked women, whose depiction in any other context would have been frowned upon. This assembly of numerous works by Orientalist painters constitutes a sublime testimony to an imagined fantasy Orient, located between eroticism and sensuality. Plentiful nudity. Konemann, 2020. Mature Readers...More.

ART NOUVEAU MÜNCHEN, WIEN, PRAHA
Highly Recommended. By Thomas Hauffe. Between 1890 and the beginning of the First World War, a new international style developed in architecture and design. Following the example of the English Arts and Crafts movement, the representatives of Art Nouveau turned against the eclectic excesses of the Victorian era, embracing organic forms, plant ornamentation and functional free-flowing architecture. This volume shows the highlights of European Art Nouveau as it was interpreted, everywhere a bit differently, in Germany, Austria, Bohemia, Hungary, Italy and Switzerland. Konemann, 2020...More.

Blockbusters like The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Frozen, and Moana captivated audiences around the globe. Explores how Disney navigated the dramatic shift to computer animation and is filled with vivid descriptions, never-before-seen art, and interviews with the artists themselves. THE ART OF MAGIC 2021 Calendar
Vintage Magician Posters. Recommended. This dazzling collection of vintage posters pays tribute to the golden age of magic (1875–1930), when sleight of hand and death-defying feats inspired a popular trend in poster arts. These hypnotic images, produced by renowned illustrators and lithographers, celebrated the mysterious powers of magicians such as Houdini, Jansen, Carter, and Annie Abbott. LE PATER ALPHONSE MUCHA'S SYMBOLIST MASTERPIECE Hardcover
Our Highest Recommendation. By Thomas Negovan. By 1899, Alphonse Mucha was the most recognizable artist of Art Nouveau graphics and the most celebrated illustrator in Paris. So Mucha insisted upon creating a deeply personal work, a magnificent, oversized deluxe limited edition, Le Pater. For the remainder of his life he considered this his masterpiece. This Symbolist story features a female deity protecting humankind, sophisticated occult themes and mystical illustrations. And this edition from Century Guild is one of the most beautifully produced books I've seen: oversized, quarter leather, gilt embossed cover and gilt page edges...and packed with amazing work, from never-before-seen studies and paintings, each magnificent page of Le Pater itself.
