KEVIN NOWLAN'S MARVEL HEROES Artist's Edition

A true labor of love, this graphic novel took Nowlan 25 years to complete. IDW, 2023. Rush Service and International shipping would require an additional charge....More.

20TH CENTURY ALCOHOL & TOBACCO ADS 40th Anniversary Edition
New Bargain-priced edition. Recommended. By Allison Silver & Steven Heller. A delightful journey down through decades of primo advertising art in the service of hedonistic pleasures! Drinking and smoking provided marketers with products to be forged into visual feasts. In this lush compendium of advertisements, we explore how depictions of these commodities ranged from the elegant to the bizarre, revealing how manufacturers seduced their customers throughout the 20th century to imbibe and inhale. Famous artists from George Petty with his pin-up girls to J.C. Leyendecker with his handsome, richly appointed couples made it all look very cool. More than half the book looks at 1900 to 1969, to us the most interesting years. Taschen, 2023. Out of print....More.

BRUEGEL The Complete Works
Massive, oversized volume. By Jürgen Müller and Thomas Schauerte. This collection captures all the breadth and splendid detail of Bruegel’s oeuvre like never before, and gathers all 40 paintings, 65 drawings, and 89 engravings in pristine reproductions — each piece a unique witness to both the religious mores and the close-knit folk culture of Bruegel’s time. This monograph is a testament to Bruegel’s evolution as an artist, one who bravely confronted the issues of his day all the while proposing new inventions and solutions. Rather than idealizing reality, he addressed the horrors of religious warfare and took a critical stand against the institution of the Church. To this end, he developed his own pictorial language of dissidence, lacing innocuous everyday scenes with subliminal statements in order to escape repercussions. Taschen, 2022....More.

RAYGUNS AND ROCKETSHIPS Vintage Science Fiction Book Cover Art Hurt
Highly Recommended. By Rian Hughes. Forword by Steve Holland. Art by Josh Kirby, John Richards, Henry Fox, Ron Turner, Jack Goggins et al. This is one cool book. They were brash and seductive - for around a shilling, the future was yours. Korero Press, 2022. Condition: Bumped corners....More.

MARVEL VALUE STAMPS A Visual History
Recommended. By Roy Thomas. The story of the inspired comic book promotional campaign, collected here for the first time. In 1973 Stan Lee devised this ingenious promotional campaign, which appeared on the letters pages of monthly comics. Readers could cut out all 100 of these super hero and super villain stamps and place them in a special mail-order booklet. Once complete, these stamp books could then be redeemed for special discounts and exclusive merchandise — and the comics were ruined! The program was so successful, a second set was released in 1975. Now, for the first time, these original stamp books, stamps, and all of the surrounding ephemera (every single page the stamps were on including editorial, letters, ads, and cool stuff) and source material are collected into one must-have volume for collectors and fans. DIAN HANSON'S THE HISTORY OF MEN'S MAGAZINES Volume 1 From 1900 to Post WWII
New Printing. Recommended. By Dian Hanson. 700 covers and photos from France, Germany, the U.S., England, Turkey, Austria, Spain, Argentina and more, plus informative text. It was the French who produced the first nude magazines in 1880, as souvenirs for patrons of Parisian music halls. Newsstand magazines followed, and the elegant La Vie Parisienne (Paris Life), full of sexy fiction and illustrations, debuted in 1914. American Wilford Fawcett launched Capt. Billy’s Whiz Bang in 1919, helping launch the first sexual revolution of the 1920s. Decadent Weimar Berlin produced cabaret, fetish and free love magazines, countered by nudist titles pushing fascist politics! Taschen, 2023. Adult Material....More.

DIAN HANSON'S THE HISTORY OF MEN'S MAGAZINES Volume 2 From Post War to 1959
Back in Print. Recommended. By Dian Hanson. 650 magazine covers and photos from the U.S., Mexico, Argentina and England, plus informative essays. After WWII, the U.S. quickly came to dominate the men’s magazine market. Playboy, launched in December 1953, made a huge impact on publishing, but already on the stands were quirky burlesque titles Beauty Parade, Wink, Titter and Eyeful, featuring Bettie Page and covers by artist Peter Driben. Much loved WWII pin-ups, often of aspiring starlets, led to “news and nudes” titles with cover girls Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield, and to more lurid titles like Shock, blending burlesque and celebrity scandal. In New York City a clandestine fetishist magazine industry, bankrolled by the mob, emerged, first with John Willie’s Bizarre, then female dominant Exotique. Taschen, 2023. Adult Material....More.

DIAN HANSON'S THE HISTORY OF MEN'S MAGAZINES Volume 3 1960s at the Newsstand
New Printing. Recommended. By Dian Hanson. 650 groovy covers and photos from Argentina, England, France, Germany, Italy, and the U.S., plus text. Sexual revolution, civil rights, Flower Power, miniskirts, women’s lib, the Pill, Black Panthers, hippies; all these words and phrases entered our language in the turbulent 1960s. The decade started as an extension of the domestic ‘50s and ended with worldwide chaos as baby boomers reached sexual maturity. What a fun decade for men’s magazines. Taschen, 2023. Adult Material....More.

DIAN HANSON'S THE HISTORY OF MEN'S MAGAZINES Volume 4 1960s Under the Counter
New Printing. Recommended. By Dian Hanson. In 650 ground-breaking covers and photos from the U.S., England, and Sweden with descriptive text."California Slicks" revolutionized the field with bad-girl themes: big hair, heavy make-up, cigarettes and cocktails —too strong to sell openly on newstands. Elmer Batters invented leg art photography with four fetish titles. Irving Klaw introduced spanking and bondage digests. Sexploitation films were celebrated in Blazing Films and Banned. In England, totally nude models starred, and in Sweden Swedish Sin challenged censorship, and won. Taschen, 2023. Adult Material....More.

DIAN HANSON'S THE HISTORY OF MEN'S MAGAZINES Volume 5 1970s at the Newsstand
New Printing. Recommended. By Dian Hanson. 600 hair-raising covers and photos from Denmark, England, France, Germany, Japan, the U.S. and more, with the usual inspired text. Pubic hair appeared on the American newsstand in 1970 compliments of Penthouse magazine. Within a year it was everywhere, and in 1975 Midwest redneck Larry Flynt parted the hair and made the pink beyond the centerpiece of Hustler. Screw followed. The Pill removed pregnancy fear and couples embraced swinging, the suburban sexual revolution, with swing magazines in the U.S. and Europe helping to hook them up. Taschen, 2023. Adult Material....More.

Warning: everything in this volume is uncensored and for mature adults only. 600 covers and photos from Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, and the U.S. with the usual amusing text. In the late 1960s specialty bookstores selling magazines under the counter were replaced by sex shops, or “adult bookstores” in the U.S., at which point every subject, with few exceptions, was freely available. Taschen, 2023. Adult Material. ...More.

Reminder: any title that sells out will disappear from our website and you won’t find it, even using the specific code. We used to be able to say “sold out” but a software update kiboshed that feature. We did sell about ten titles Wednesday night but there is plenty of great stuff left, including many brand new listings.

News & Notes

Spacemen Replica Editions Bonus Prints!

The publisher didn’t inform us—but we just realized that the Spacemen Replica Editions #1-6, advertised just recently, each contain TWO full-sized bonus prints in each package. Prints are large sized reproductions of classic 1950s sci fi movies, such as This Island Earth, Queen of Outer Space, Journey to the Seventh Planet, Planet of the Vampires, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Lost Planet, Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers, and The Invisible Boy. They seem to be randomly inserted, so there is duplication from one Replica edition to another. Since the sets are sealed, we cannot tell you which prints you’ll get in each replica, so you could potentially get duplicates when buying different titles.

Fantastic Worlds of Frank Frazetta Update

The deluxe edition is not listed on Amazon at all. We assume that it’s still in print, since we have a reorder coming, but we don’t know for how long. Meanwhile, the regular edition remains out of print — Amazon associate sellers now list it at $300. We expect our restock of first printings to be here any day now, and we have enough to last for at least a few weeks if you have yet to pick up a copy. Our price is still $200.

Collector Supplies

I’ve been warning about this for a while — we just got hit with new prices on bags and boards so we’ve had to adjust our prices on most of these. For current prices see our website — prices in past catalogs are no longer valid. A few remain the same, including Paperback and Postcard Bags. Next week we’ll be announcing restocks of 4 mil Mylar, which virtually disappeared from commerce for a good year or two! We still have plenty of the popular 2 mil Mylites (which I prefer myself).

Our regular shipping rates are based on sending books, which are lighter and can be shipped using lower rates such as media mail. Supplies are heavier compared to their prices, and often have to be shipped at a more expensive rate, such as Priority Mail. So we are forced to build in some extra margin to the retail price to try and cover the extra shipping cost on bags and, particularly, on much heavier backing boards.
