The year is 1938, and the world is holding its breath —mesmerized by the onrushing storm that will soon engulf it in fire and steel. In New York City, one man’s sleep is filled with tormenting visions of the evils that mankind visits upon itself, compelling him to act. THE ART OF PERRY PETERSON Limited to 1000. Highly Recommended. By Daniel Zimmer. TThis spectacular book explores the life and work of Perry Peterson (1908-58), in his day one of the nation's top slick magazine illustrators. Today he is largely forgotten, except for fans of vintage magazine illustration. His excellent work appeared in magazines like The Saturday Evening Post, American Magazine, Cosmopolitan, and Collier's, almost exclusively illustrating fiction. His pretty girls, handsome men, and dramatic scenes show that nothing was beyond his skill. His tragic death in a fire in 1958 cut short a promising career....More. HOKUSAI Inspiration and Influence Recommended. How artists from Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi to Whistler and Arthur Wesley Dow embraced and transformed Hokusai’s dynamic style and innovations. This book looks at Hokusai from the viewpoint of fellow artists who incorporated lessons learned from him into their own work, including Hokusai’s own students, his contemporary rivals and his many posthumous admirers working in a wide range of media, in Japan and around the world, from the late 19th century to the present. MFA Publications, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 2023....More. Item Code: HOKIN Soft Cover, 9x10, 168pg, Partial Color $29.95 |
Here’s more on Hokusai, including a graphic novel about his life...plus more from the world of Japanese art. |
THE ART OF PINK FLOYD THE WALL Recommended. A huge, oversized, sumptuously illustrated book collecting Gerald Scarfe's iconic work for Pink Floyd. First The Wall was an album, then it was a stage show, a film — now here is the definitive book, a work of art in its own right. Large, landscape-format, presented in a stunning slipcase designed by Scarfe. Packed with photos of the band, performances, stage design, drawings and paintings which incorporate the iconic imagery of The Wall alongside new and previously unseen material. Little Brown, 2023....More. Item Code: ARTPFWH Hard Cover, 14x10, 288pg, Full Color |
MEL RAMOS First Kiss Die-Cut cover, cloth binding. American painter Mel Ramos (1935-2018) cemented himself as a key figure in Pop art at a momentous 1963 group exhibition at LACMA that presented his work alongside that of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. He then established a signature style for himself by appropriating and re-contextualizing the sexually provocative imagery found in magazine ads of that time. Ramos’s most famous paintings feature voluptuous female nudes positioned on top of various consumer goods, including corn stalks, Chiquita bananas, candy wrappers and martini glasses. Kerber, 2023. Rumors abound of German submarines landing on the east coast, mysterious appearances — and disappearances — on the banks of the East River. Eisner Hall of Fame – Dan Gearino/Comic Shop/icv2 interview Well, I didn’t make it into the Hall of Fame this year. Neither did my mentor, Phil Seuling. But I’m still honored and got lots of support from friends, Maybe next year! Thanks to everyone who participated. At the same time, Milton Griepp, who wrote such a nice piece about Phil and I for his icv2, contacted Dan Gearino to do a full-on interview with me. Dan wrote the book Comic Shop and he’d previously used quite a lot from our conversations to fill in the history of comic stores. The hardcover of this has gone out of print, but a softcover is coming soon. We’ll handle it and I’ll sign copies, as I did the hardcover. Meanwhile, keep an eye on icv2 for my interview, and I’ll post a link here as soon as it’s online. You can still see my last interview on comicbookhistorians.com https://comicbookhistorians.com/comic-book-interviews/. Scroll down, I’m the 11th listed. Some great interviews here, check them out. And of course you can still score my in-print interviews in The Comic Book Creator #27 and 28. Nuff said, indeed! |
